Archer / Wiseman : Generation Pool ESPN Match

Just got back from watching the TV matches in Charlotte.

(Wiseman wins 7-to-6)

The Wiseman/Archer match was really intense with a lot of sharking from Archer. He was warned by Steve Tipton at one point for asking for a rules clarification while Tipton was standing over a shot being made by Wiseman.

I was suprised that the commentary will be added later. It will difficult for them to capture the energy of the match while adding it later in a studio.

I heard about the little sharking incident. Makes you wonder why a guy with that much experience would pull a move like that. Heat of the moment I guess.

Players do have their quirks. They all do. LOL!

Johnny and Keith had an unpleasant discourse at a Joss Turning Stone event which brought me literally to tears. Of course, it doesn't take much to get my waterworks going these days. That's what happens when you get old and are of the female persuasion. Today, thinking about pool in general can make me cry.

Ronnie Wiseman, God bless him, is a slow player, much like Johnny Archer. However, he's an old-school player. Though he is a tournament soldier in this setting, Ronnie Wiseman is an action man, a road warrior, and practices good pool etiquette.

This finals must have a lot of pregnant pauses, for lack of a better word, with the slow play. I wonder if there was a shot clock.

I have a lot of pics of Ronnie, but here is my all-time fave of Ronnie and Alex, with Keith, taken at the Carolinas Open. Ronnie won the one-pocket event, and Alex won the 9-ball event. They were both on the road together!

A bit of irony; I played Ronnie Wiseman in a UPA tour event in Vegas at Binions about two years ago in a first round match, race to 10 nine ball. No one in the playing area but us and Johnny Archer three tables down practicing straight pool.

We get to hill-hill, I'm running out the rack, and all of a sudden I see Archer sitting next to Ronnie (inside the ropes) eating a bag of potato chips, five feet from the table. It was obviously a tight match, and he should have known better, unless he was trying to influence the outcome of the match.
Scott Smith was running a book back then, so who knows if Johnny had money on Ronnie.

This was a very tense match and I was already on edge. I mentioned to Johnny "If you're going to sit here you need to be quiet." He went ahead and left, and as I lined up the next shot I noticed he had stopped outside the ring, directly in line with my shot.

I got up, and he moved. I got slightly out of line, missed the next shot and Wiseman won.

The UPA would not even speak to Archer about this incident. I contacted Frank Alvarez several times, even to get Johnny's e-mail address. He wouldn't give it to me.

I'm not surprised to hear that he tried to shark Wiseman.

I call it competitive gesturing. Although I don't condone it, I do expect it and so should you. The only thing you can control is how you react to it. If I am playing and my opponent is trying to shark me, that just gives me fuel as I know he's worried about me. You simply have to disregard it and stay in rhythm. Did Archer actually cause you to lose that match? What caused you to lose all those other games and miss shots before he showed up?
