are fake Aramith Balls easy to detect?

So I may as well buy the cheap ones...
Depending on your situation, that may be the right choice. If you can't tell the difference in play, then the cheap ones will be fine. I learned to play with fairly soft plastic balls on a Sears table with a fiberboard bed. I knew it wasn't as good as the equipment at the rec center or the pool hall, but it was good enough for where I was.

At one time the counterfeit balls tended to break on impact. I think @Cornerman had this issue.

This just in from Aramith...

I swear the set of Dynaspheres I bought off Amazon a couple years ago are fake.
I can't hit a ball without scuffing it. At first I thought it was just the CB, but I started doing drills that shoot balls one after the other, replacing the last ball.
That's when I noticed that each time I struck the ball with the cue it left a scuff mark.
I tried 4 different tips and at least half a dozen different chalk brands and nothing changed.
99% of the time my table is used for practice so it doesn't matter much.
