Are League Players This Bad?

Precisely.
I was not trolling, ghost. I was serious as a heart attack, which I've had by-the-way.
Leagues, and league players are our future. The days of teenagers heading into the poolrooms and learning the craft are over.
There about eight of us golden oldies currently playing, in my neck of the woods. When we go, (and most of us already have one foot in the grave and the other one on a banana peel) who's gonna fill dem shoes. Well, it's going to be league players because they're all that's left.
Such is life. :)

no, i know you weren't actually this time :) but the troll is strong in you my friend......togetha we can RULEEEE this galaxy and rid it of the pestilence of the 5speed muh hahahahahahhahaha lol

its not the poor league players anyways imop that are the bad seeds....its the rules and such how its built that makes all the mess and ruins many...again imop

I have some real questions for the o.p.

1. How long have you been around the game?

2. Ever watched yourself during a match on video? Under pressure?

3. Do you have any concept of league play in general?

4.Do you think your the best player in the room?

In my experience you would have to be a absolute beginner to post what you did, if not a dunce.

Leagues break down like this:
Teams of friends that play terrible on average =88%
Teams of friends that work on their game together (b-a)=10%
Teams of top players that are very strong (masters and aa)=2%

Stupid quotes like yours, priceless.

I suggest that the OP go back to the room next week and ask who the best shooter in the league is and ask if they want to play for money. Could be small money or even for beers.

I suspect he will find out quickly if they are all as "bad" as he thinks.

I was of the "league sucks" mindset also, having played in the past.

My issue was always not getting enough play, meaning I didn't want to sit and watch period lol. I figure if I'm gonna be away from home, GF, etc. I want the time to be spend hitting balls 100% of the time unless gambling and then I'd like it be 70 - 80% :)

I have come to realize that without league players there would be no new people coming into the game and it would fade away completely. With that said, I would still be just as happy playing at home by myself, but this isn't about me.

I still feel leagues have an obligation to have a site where there are training videos available and possibly a few pros to answer questions to help the players improve.

Anyway, I hope everybody playing league enjoys it enough to bring somebody else into the game

I went somewheres tonight to watch a pool league. Dunno if its an APA or VNEA or Local or something else. And I must admit, what I saw was pitiful. I mean really, really bad.

Is this typical of the caliber of play in most leagues? I was thinking about trying to hook up with a team to get some competition but no thanks after what I saw

Yes most leagues are crap when it comes to a high level of pool competition. I always tell guys that if your out just to mingle and have fun then join if thats your thing but if your out to become a better pool player that's serious about there game, then stay the hell out of pool leagues.

If league players are the future and soul of the game then the game has obviously devolved, which we already know. Let's hope that every once in a while a league player that has that natural talent for the game gets bit really hard. When I say hard, I think a lot of you know what I'm talking about, and he rises above and carries on the tradition of desiring to play top notch pool. Not the "I want to be a pro" passion, just a love of the game and the enjoyment of learning the game and the satisfaction of zoning in that can't be explained. This feeling will propel that player to seek out new challenges and better opponents, which is how you improve.

DCP, when was the last time you went out and played in any form of competition? I'm not talking about having a friend over to shoot, or going to a poolhall with your friend.

Im talking about actual competition... Tournament/Action/League... whatever.

These league players (while some may play bad) are rated according to skill level. Some are completely new to the game. Some are there just for a fun night out and dont care about getting better. Some play pretty damn good and can run packages.

There is one thing that everyone of them has that you don't... heart. They are out there, trying to win, in competition, for their team to advance on to something bigger.

H<----------- can't believe he is defending pool leagues.

Awesome post. Perhaps you can go watch some little kids play soccer tonight, and report back as to how bad they suck, as well?

Anyone who mocks someone that's trying to get better at something is a douche. Plain and simple. If the plastic bottle fits....

God Bless the APA
They lift me up and carry me on wings of glorious self-esteem every time I watch them play. I am grateful that there are many many faithful members of this and other leagues that are perfectly happy to stay at the same skill level for 14 years on the same team in the same hall. Different people get different things from pool and pool leagues. Just happy to see them in the hall having fun.

We gotta play it one day at a time. I'm just happy to be here. Hope I can help the ball club. I just wanna give it my best shot and, the good Lord willing, things will work out.

Regards,

Lesh

Great post.

Tried to.edit.my post for mid typing on my phone and wound up duplicating it.

Damn...oh well... Back fo work

The sport of pool is in dismal shape in this country and the many contributing factors have been discussed at length. I suck at pool but from my perspective, this sport needs me and people like me desperately. My annual spend on pool industry related goods and services is above the average pool player/enthusiast. I suppose that my skill level improves slowly over time so that someday my game may not disgust the OP. The players in that league are the grass roots of the sport. From them, others will be introduced including, someday, their children. Break down all the golfers in the US and rate their skill level A through D with A being scratch. The percentage of D's way, way over 50%. The golf industry would die without all those "hackers". Therefore, they are treated respectfully at courses all over America and they are encouraged to take lessons, play more and improve. Better players don't turn their nose up at those trying to learn the game. In fact, most skilled folks are willing to lend a hand with some helpful tips when asked. The sport of golf knows where the bread is buttered and it is not with the small percentage of great players.

Want to know one major thing that is wrong with pool from an avid player and fan like me? It is the least accepting and inviting sport in America. It is filled with people like the OP. Certainly there are good ambassadors but plenty that discourage the growth of the sport. People like me and the poor players in that league buy cues, cases, balls, tables, cloth, private instruction, league dues, pay per view, etc., etc. You really want to discourage these people? I often feel like there is no place in this sport for a guy like me. I'm a little older and trying to develop a decent game. So where do I fit OP?

Good point that I've witnessed, too.

The good news is that ANY player can become more accepting and helpful from this very second onward.
It's a choice that doesn't require money, votes, dues or anything too costly but yields good results
for those involved. What's not to love?

Totally agree. So, I'm about to make myself target to some jokes, but I'm making a point. I also play badminton on a decently competitive level. When a "newbie" comes to the club, we don't smash shuttles at them, or pick on them, or laugh at them because they're new. If they want to play with us, we adjust our level of play to make it fun, yet challenging for them, but we never make them feel out of place. Because...a few years ago, we were the newbies. And the people that played with me extended me the same courtesy of teaching me how to play, without feeling like an outsider. One of my greatest joys in pool was when I was an aspiring 4/5 in the CPA, and the superstar 7 knew my name, and would say hello to me. Having the attention and respect of the peers you admire and emulate will do more for your game than anything, because you feel like part of something bigger.

I pay it forward now. I'm the 7. And when a 2/3/4 comes to talk with me, I make a point of learning their name, and saying hi to them when I can. And if they want to play a few racks after league, I am more than happy to hit balls with them. And when they ask me questions, I do my best to answer them. Because there was a time 20 years ago when I was trying desperately to draw the cueball like the "good players". And without a little encouragement from those guys, and a few pointers, etc.....I'd have probably given up.

Whoever told you that gratuitously slamming people who are out for a good time and do not make pool the central focus of their lives would improve YOUR game lied to you.

You might be better at pool than they are, but my guess is that they are better at life.

I didn't read that the OP was slamming league players, but simply commenting on what happened to him that night.

And I've played league for more than 30 years, so I've been slammed before for it.

fwiw,

Jeff Livingston

Heck I am slammed every time some one here disagrees with another poster and then said poster decides to insult the person who disagrees with the by calling them an apa 5.

Guess I gotta work on becoming a 6 .
