Wrong question
Who needs professional pool players? I think that should be the primary question prior to asking if pros are necessary.
A short list of the people or organizations that need professional pool players would include:
Next question. Are professional pool players needed for the sport to survive. No, but the sport is better off for having them.
In short with out a bar to aim for, how are you supposed to know how high you can go?

- other Pro players
- students of the game
- fans
- pool room owners
- equipment manufactures

I think Pros are needed - but supergreenman was pretty correct.
There has to be a goal for amateurs to aspire to reach.
I cannot comprehend someone playing pool (or anything) without the ultimate goal of improving. If just for personal satisfaction.
That is just the way I am built.
And I think the pros show us how the game can be played - the top levels of cuemanship is pretty awesome and very fes will ever get there - but is should be what helps us to continue.
For the fans - high level play is needed.
To be a complete game or sport, there has to be soem level of measuring abilities.
That is why we need pool on TV and streaming - to show how it can be done.
There are many things that need to occur before this can happen on a regular basis - but the concept is there.
Just my thoughts - and part of the reason that CSI promotes both amateur and pro events.
