Are small folding-type tables a good idea?

My 1 bedroom apartment is too small for a pool table, and i only get out to the bar once or twice a week. I've been thinking of ways to practice at home to improve, but i'm worried the small, foldable type tables will throw my game off.. The balls are smaller and lighter.

Are these a good idea for practice, and does anyone have any particular one they can recommend?

no they are just a waste of money. Thats just a toy, and your not going to improve on something like that, more than likely you will form bad habits.

You can work on your mechanics at home without a table, if you have at least a cue stick then you can perfect your mechanics. Even develop a pre shot routine. Having a solid foundation is much more important than hitting balls especially in the beginning. The more bad habits you pick up in the beginning the steeper the climb is to get right and keep progressing.

I'm inclined to agree with this. What i'd really like is something like a long, narrow slate "table" that i can place on my dining room table to practice aim, draw, english etc, but using regular balls and have it be regular length.

I've been searching google for something like this but only found patents, not actual products.

See if you can find a broken slate, buy it, cut it to size, cover with the cloth that was on the table before the slate got broken, cover some 2x4's with the same old cloth from the broken table, make a frame with them, for the slate so the balls get stopped, and viola!... yo have a 3' or 4' practice "table".

Get a big-screen TV instead. That way you can play pocket-pool while you're watching reruns of 'Baywatch'.
