Why are some people so quick to discredit the Filipinos and their game.
Because they have been number one for a long time. Everybody guns for number one. It's a badge of honor.
The one exception is Shane gambling in a long race. Maybe gambling period.
Why are some people so quick to discredit the Filipinos and their game.
I remember the poster who said the Filipinos are dirty players. Lol
I'm betting 90% of the people on this site won't play any of those "under achieving" Filipino pool players for money.
According to this logic: why hasn't Phil Ivey won the Main Event multiple times now if he is that good?
When it comes to tournaments with double elimination races to 10 or 11 there is a bit of luck involved. Any tournament has luck involved. Granted pool tournaments do not have the same degree of luck as a poker tournament, but it is there. You would be foolish to think that the best player in a pool tournament field wins it every time. Luck plays a factor. In any major tournament that is bringing in top players all over the globe you are pretty much flipping a coin in the last 16 in each match.
Luck obviously plays a factor in pool.
Now think about it , did Big Ko sweep both the 9 n 10 ball by luck ?
Did Wu won consecutive 9 n 8 ball wpa titles by luck ?
Did Shane won 5 Us open by luck ?
Did yang chin hsun masaccred dennis in the heart of philipines by luck too ?
Did thorsten won 2 wpa 9ball by luck too ?
Are the filipinos that unlucky ?
Throuhout the taiwanese dominance on the wpa title and Shane make the us open look like his local pool room competition , where were the filipinos ?
Are the filipinos that unlucky that they are always unable to win the most pretigious wpa title ?
Way to much to read here ,, fact is not all players in Taiwan or China choose pool to begin with many of the crem dela cream players are going to snooker or 3 rail where prize money dwarfs pool money
And Jay Dennis has been waxed by Shane , Shane's 10 games up on a hundred before the first ball is broken he's folded like a cheap suit playing Shane

Has the taiwanese players been instilled a winning mentality from a young age or do the filipinos simply just choke under pressure when it matters despite being hyped to be the strongest pool country .
Hi , like the title says, hope to hear some healthy insights , opinions for a beneficial discussion.
Heres what i think , filipinos are known for their smooth stroke and fancy ball control but i was just thinking about it and wondered when was the last time the filipinos won something "Major" ?!
Pool is one of the filipino's major pride ( from Efren paving the way ) but it seems like in recent years the taiwanese seems to have an upper edge over the filipinos and win almost all the major title.
From time to time , you will hear news " OVER-HYPING " the next big thing , from Dennis Orcollo to Carlo Biado to current Anton Raga but none of em have even won a major world title.
Dennis has played in countless Us open exceed 10 and biado has been in the pro circuit for years.
About 10 years ago , Dennis orcollo was touted to be the best money player on the universe and barked at then Taiwan money game king Yang chin hsun and got his ass handed real bad to him in front of his home crowd being massacred by 18 rack in a short race to 60 .
Besides , the man's about 40 and havent won a world 8 9 or 10 ball title .
On the other hand on the taiwanese, wu chia chin make 9ball look juvenile n childish by winning it at 15 and 8 ball at 16.
Ko pin yi had a crazy 2015 which imho set a record will never be repeated by sweeping both the world 9 and 10 ball ( lets omit the luck factor becoz no matter how lucky u get u dont win 2 world titled in 1 yr BY LUCK )
And in Kevin Cheng's 1st try , he won the us open.
And in the recent Japan Open big ko won it his second.
Now back to Filipinos who have won the world title , efren ( 9ball ) at 38 , busty ( 9ball ) over 45and youngest Ronnie Alcano ( prob 30's ) won the 9ball in 2006 and 8 ball in 2007 and went to the 9ball finals but lost in 2012.
Why do the filipinos seems to bloom at later age and win a major title when they're old while the taiwanese seems to all win titles young and early before they even hit 20's or 30's.
Has the taiwanese players been instilled a winning mentality from a young age or do the filipinos simply just choke under pressure when it matters despite being hyped to be the strongest pool country .
Dont get me wrong , Johann Chua and Raymond Farron has both won a All Japan Championship each but still seem trivial compared to the acheivements of the taiwanese.
In fact when it comes to Big Money competitions like those in China, the taiwanese seems to be sweeping it all.
Also when it comes to the youth world championships , theres a taiwanese prodigy wu yu lun who won 3, big n little ko won 1 each and beating a few filipinos like jericho banares in the finals.
Now let the healthy discussion on why filipino acheivements eems to be overshadowed by the taiwanese players ??
In each of the wins you listed, the outcomes could very well have been flipped if the match was played again, no? One race to 13 to decide a championship can very well be won by either opponent on any given day.

Remember, we are not talking about who is the better player. We are just discussing winning one race to 11 or 13 on any given day by world class players. Even the top players (AAA) get knocked out in the early stages by A rated players. Single race has alot of factors. Right?
1. Many Taiwanese kids do receive serious, even world-class training in school at a small age. (Chang JL, Wu Jiaqing and Ko brothers came from the same school if I remember correctly)
2. They had a national pro league, and many players joined it when they're still very young (Wu at 13 or 14?), so I think Taiwanese players do have more experience when it comes to competitions. (But the league has been cancelled for 2 years due to a lack of sponsors)
Filipino commentator Bob Guerrero asked the same question . And like you he was asking about lack of Winners /champions in big tourneys . He was not asking about lack of finishers or players who finish runner up or last 4 or last 8 week which many posters here were pointing out
At any big tourney like recent Kuwait Open , All Japan, plenty of Filipinos finish deep in later stages - All Japan had Filipinos making up 50% of last 16
Key question why have they not won more major titles
Bob Guerrero analysed it in 2nd half of this article

Yeah but statistical improbability starts to become a factor when you start looking at 5 US Opens, multiple world championships, ect... The guys who are not one offing these events (like Hudji See or Daryl Peach) and are instead winning multiple major events are bucking the odds and most of those guys are doing that for a reason. They are flat out just that little bit better then most of the other guys and that allows them to get there in those races to 13 more then most of the other guys.
SVB did not win 5 US Opens because he is wicked lucky in coin flips...

What about the time when Yang Chin Shun masaccred Dennis mercilessly in front of his filipino home crowd in the color of money 2 ?
It wasnt a race to 13 but long race to 60 , and Yang made dennis look like a practice session by winning over 18 racks.
Bear in mind , dennis was then the money game king so he woofed at yang n got his ass delivered on a nice gold platter.
I remember that match, it's very surprising indeed. Didn't expect Yang to win it by such a large margin.
Anyway, Yang had been Taiwan's #1 for a long time, and thus one of the world's best players. But he has very much underachieved. And that's inexplicable as well.
