Are these the old Champion Tips?

Hey guys,

I read on here a couple times that in the old days, lots and lots of players used the Champion tips. Being a sucker for a good non-layered tip, I looked around until I found a supplier that still had some lying around. The way I understand it is that production of these tips stopped a loooong time ago.
I took two pictures of the tips that I have, and I would like to know the opinion of people who played with these back in the days to see if they are the real deal.

I believe they were light brown and had a red fiber pad on them. I think they were comparable to LePros in terms of hardness (at least soon after install).

I'd recommend a medium or hard version one of the better layered tips out there instead though. I feel they're more consistent.

EDIT: There were a few hardness variations of them too I think...like Chandivert, etc.
 
Hey Franky,

Did you see the pics? These tips have the red backing and are light brown.
Chandivert was the manufacturer I believe, they made and make lots of tips.

Hi Dave

I have a few at home, but it is a thick red fibre pad and its red. It doesn't show up that way in the photo. Otherwise the color looks about right. We use to use the pad and throw the Champion away and put a Le Pro on.They are softer than the Le Pro and mushroom plenty.

Chandivert was the French company that made these over seas but they no longer exist. They made the
Champion (Med Hard)
Rocky (Super Hard)
Comprime (?)
Match (Med)
Eureka (Soft)
Super Royal (Medium)
Crown (Hard)
and a few more including a layered tip I believe.

Thanks for the info. Most of the tips I have seem to have two layers of fibre backing, the bottom one is a brownish red (allthough on some it's just brown), the other is green/blue in color. Together they are about 1.5mm thick. They are on the soft side.

Yea I saw the pics but I just stated what I remembered about them since I wasn't sure they were the same thing. *shrug*
 
Champion and Triumph looked the same unless you had them side by side. I still have stock on both.
 
I think the pictures look like truimph. The Champions are more reddish in color. Champions hit pretty good. I tried on a year or so ago.
 
I just noticed Imageshack resized the pics because they were over 1.5 MB.
Here are the high res versions fwiw.
I looked at the color of the fiber backing more carefully, and I have 5 tips that have a reddish
backing and five that have a brown backing so I probably have two hardness levels. The ones
with the brown backing are also slightly lighter in color of the leather.

That looks like them. I have a fresh box here I bought from Atlas about 4 years ago. Your leather is a tiny shade lighter but mine have been kept in a dark area the whole time. I also have a box of Match.

if the coloring in the photos are correct, these don't look like champions. champions have a very red red backing and the leather is a very "rich" brown....,.thing is,,,my memory is fading , so i might be all wrong :)

try hitting with the tip. IT IS UNIQUE. it has a lively sharp/crisp feel and nothing like you've ever played with in your life,,,,while other hard tips are just,,,,,hard. also,,,coming across a bunch of old champions is rare indeed. i've heard of people hording them or collecting them. if i had a box, i would never sell them because they are rare, and what's a couple of hundred bucks when you don't have 'em anymore. there's nothng "reddISH" about champion pads,,,,they ARE RED.

I'm not an expert on Champions but from what I understand, the ones Atlas has had for the past 10 years are NOT the "old" ones. They died a long time before then.

There is one super strong player in my room who came up in the 70's who has a box of the old ones from that time. He doesn't come around anymore, so I can't check his box now.
 
The Old Champions were different than the Chandivert Champions. They supposedly were made by one man like the Morri's. When he died, in the early 80's, he supposedly took his secret recipe with him. Then Chandivert started making a copy which played differently. Chandivert is also gone now.

I think those may be from the 80's. The early champions were much softer(about a medium) and the sides was not as well pressed as the later ones. The late ones are hard and better pressed side walls.
