Pool was in a weakened state and interest was slipping, especially among younger people and this was before Covid-19 pandemic arrived.

Is there any reason for optimism or is this thing gonna beat pool down to where it can't sustain in a meaningful way?

I find some peace in the fact that tournaments
in the early 90's paid better than almost all
we have today.
Yet pool skill and access to watching pros compete
is way better.
Pool will soldier on.

You pose a meaningful question; the economic hurt COVID has caused small business operators is pretty unimaginable.
And then will there ever be resemblance of normalcy again and when? In retrospect, just how normal were things before?

Much to my dismay, I think the future of pool, its actual welfare, will depend on how well local & nat’l league resume play.
Now more than before leagues will be the life blood for pool room operators and pool rooms with a kitchen will do better.

Great question because COVID-19 has progressed from a very contagious virus to a real pandemic and is now endemic.
Social distancing measures aren’t largely effective when a large segment of the population has already become infected.

Pool rooms are dependent on repeat business and right now COVID-19 decides when & how they open & for how long?
As we’re inarguably witnessing, the COVID 2nd wave has’t arrived yet since the first one is still here and it’s Tsunami like.

One thing's for sure, we're clearly no smarter than the dinosaurs.
I will respectfully disagree. We have the capabilities to fight this crap but still have a lot of pocket resistance. The dinos had no choice in the matter. Lights out for them...goodby! If people as whole would get together on this crap it can be a battle won. Just getting everyone on the same page is a fight.
Yea, on second thought..........maybe you're right....the dinos were smarter than humans.

Pretty simple discussion, wear a mask if you absolutely have to go out and stay home if you don't.

Anything else is even worse than the dinosaurs, they didn't choose to kill the rest of the dinosaurs along with them

What participation sport hasn't taken a beating during the Corona nightmare? Are we to assume that none of them will regain the fanfare of pre-Corona days?

I suspect that all the participation sports will, more or less, return to where they were, but not one of them quickly, as aggregate demand will rebound only gradually.

I don't think the demand for pool will be affected long-term at all, although like all entertainment outlets and small businesses in general, some pool halls will fold from the loss of revenue for months and months, and there will be some consolidation in the pool industry, which is not necessarily a problem.

Finally, the truth is that on the professional side, things are starting to look brighter in America. Just two years ago, the US Open 9-ball was the only top-tier WPA sanctioned event, but we've since added the Diamond Players Championship (originally called the WPA Players Championship), the World 10-ball Championship and the International 9-ball event. There are more big paydays out there for those who aspire to a career in pro pool, and the emergence of these new events will surely increase worldwide participation in American-based events.

And yet for some, the resistance to do these two simple things is hair raising. If WWIII ever comes along we're screwed. Today on doing these two things, many just say FU...I'm not doing that and you can't make me! So sad.

That's to much to ask in this country. Indonesia, New Zealand, Vietnam, South Korea, Australia all moving forward, going to restaurants, playing Pool, socializing, yet they are recording few new cases and almost no deaths.

These countries don't have a vaccine or a treatment, but they figured out that staying home, wearing a mask and social distancing works,

doesn't look like America will.

There's scarier things out there.
In 1900, 2 out of every 1,000 people in US died of TB.

We've mostly eliminated it here, but world wide, 4,400 people/day die of TB = 1.6 million/year in 2017.

So far, world wide, 1/2 million have died from Covid 19.

Some things a cure is found.
Some things are only managed.

If more people actually took it seriously (*wear a mask) we'd get it behind us faster.

*Yeah, I'm guilty as anyone in "familiar" groups. We have to get to where it is a practical issue, not political or "coolness" factor to be lax.

Last year there were 8,920 reported cases of tuberculosis in the USA.

From 1990 thru 2006, there were 53,505 cases. In 2017, the mortality
in the USA was 515 deaths. Now just one day in the USA the past 3-5
days COVID infections matches the 16 years of TB and TB’s mortality
numbers aren’t even worth the mention versus COVID. Just stop this
nonsense and deceit about diminishing the COVID threat. Look at how
the EU, Japan, Canada, Sweden, how many more nations are there that
shame our nation & embarrass the richest, most powerful country on the
planet over how they have better handled COVID versus the incompetent
handling this administration continues to do day by day as the national death
count soars without any end in sight. If this is a war, as he likes to describe it
against the invisible enemy, our country has retreated. We’re literally waving
a white flag and have jettisoned the American population to be COVID POW’s.

Thank you for having a voice! Please remember this when you vote and encourage all that you know to remember this moment too. I don't care which why you vote, just push whoever you vote for to mandate universal healthcare. Its no coincidence that 9 of the countries with the lowest cases of Covid all have Universal Health Care.

If we have to change the name to suite the public, so be it, we don't have to call it Obama Care or the Affordable Care Act, but we need it even if we don't name it.

Giving ever person the understanding of their base-line of Health allows them to make good decisions earlier and protects us all.

. Just stop this
nonsense and deceit about diminishing the COVID threat.

If that is directed at me rather than a general note, you might have misunderstood my point.

The point is that C-19 is a serious threat that could easily be mitigated with using common sense and avoiding politicized BS.

However, as a dinosaur issue (per the OP's Q about pool) , AND a good historical example, over millennia people keep learning to deal with serious threats by practicing good sanitation, habits (mask wearing) or as indicated. Some of these threats (TB) were worse in their time than C-19. And drug resistant TB continues to gain footholds where it was almost irradicated.

At the turn of the last century (1900) taking public transportation in a major city and going to a low end pool hall would almost certainly have exposed an individual to TB. At that time most people (100%) who caught it died. About 6 - 7% who catch C-19 seem to die.

We learned to manage TB by gradually imposing all kinds of forms of better sanitation and health habits. Including better nutrition, eventually eliminating sweat shops, better lighting and ventilation, etc, etc.over a 50 to 100 year period.

In consideration of that, my point was that simply wearing a mask and practicing reasonable social distancing. (like getting used to not shaking hands without anyone taking offense) seems pretty reasonable.

If your comment was directed to the world at large, i agree with you.

It remains true that a concern in coming years is all the drug resistance bugs including super strains of TB that are recurring due to poor public education and policies regarding mitigation of the factors that cause those events until they become pandemics somewhere. TB & a few others could have been irradicated & are making comebacks due to laxness and denial, usually at a political level ("It's gone, we don't need to fund that")

The USA is trying to becoming more of Communist, or Socialist Country. The Left, Progressives, and Democrats are trying to take away our Constitutional Guaranteed Freedoms. One thing at a time, like stay home orders, wear a mask, it just a mask. Anyone want a FREE TATTOO?

I posted this in another forum I frequent so it might not make 100% sense in response to your rant but is still about 99. I didn't want to take the time to edit it or retype the whole thing as I'm heading out right now. It was in response to someone who refuses to help themselves and more importantly others during a world pandemic.

Wearing out of a common agreement is a nice thought but look around. As previously mentioned getting two people to agree on something that each feels is plain common sense but totally opposite of each other thoughts is a pipe dream. Growing up we all have been rewarded with goodies for doing what we have been asked to do. Be good and don't make me the parent look unfit while we're in the store and you can have some candy when we get home. Clean your room and you can go out and play with your friends. These are just a couple examples we all have probably heard and been through growing up. These were not enacted laws but rules we were asked to follow to get what we want.(and our parents wanted) I see nothing wrong with an executive order (because face the reality, there is no common agreement) for everyone to mask up when in a public setting and social distancing isn't an option to get what we all want. Most here in the states have already experienced executive order lockdowns on businesses yet they are absolutely reluctant on the mask thing and leave it up to the individuals who are still trying to decide on, and can't, what they want to eat for supper tonight. I can not tell you how many stores and places I've been to that have signs so large that the blind would be able to read them asking people to please be respectful of others and mask up before and during their time in said store. Yet as I move through to get my things I need to survive I encounter many who are not wearing any face covering and are basically just saying to me without opening their mouths "I am not a respectful person and I don't give a rats ass about me or you." Mind blown!

I'm also very surprised with what is currently going on here in Arizona that you, CocoboloCowboy are unwilling to lend a hand to help out in a crisis situation. But then again, most people don't surprise me anymore with their actions or inactions these days.

Very eloquently stated. People are exercising their right to be garbage instead of acting upon the need to be community stewards, and it shows how far from "greatest country in the world" a certain generation has taken us.

When I read your posts I can't ever tell if you're doing too many drugs or not enough.

My mask protects you. Your mask protects me.

That's as simple as I can make it.

Controlling this virus is a matter of human decency.

It's sad how little Americans care about other Americans dying.

:(

Pool will survive. Leagues and tournaments will start up again at some point.

But for now, people are too busy turning America into the world's trailer park.
