After searching this I could not gain a reasonable perspective of how many forum members were league players based on the word "league" being pretty common... my apologies for posting if this has been covered, and in that case, mods feel free to delete this.

And no, I am not a league player.

Played league for a few years many years ago. If I go out to play pool, I want to play pool. Not sit there all night watching others play. Especially when half of them don't even care.

I like league so I play. But I don't play league to substantually improve as a pool player. I play for the social aspect as it is a night out with the guys/girls that play on the team. I only play on teams full of people I like. Won't play otherwise. I'd prefer to just play with a friend or by myself otherwise.

Lucky for me there are many league options in my city.

Team leagues, individual leagues, some you play a full set, some just a game or 2, full size tables, bar tables, beginner leagues, advanced. Basically something for everyone.

I play in 2 team BCA leagues, 9 ft tables. One is 90% social where team players rotate each game. Impossible to get into rhythm and some nights I only play 2 games. The other, a little more serious where 4 team members each play a full set.

I play APA, two nights a week. It's good competition for beginners and moderately experienced players. I realize its not as high a level as many folks here proclaim themselves to be, but I am enjoying myself, a lot.

I also play a couple other nights a week, at our local club. Casual play, more traditional rules (call pocket, etc).

League doesn't have to be for everyone. But according to the estimates, there must be close to a half million people playing pool leagues in this country alone. So there must be at least a certain level of enjoyment involved, at one level or another.

All I do is league play...

1- its 8ball which is my game of choice
2- going 5-0 is a boost of confidence for the rest of the work week
3- Free drink with dues each week so pretty much break even
4- Dive bar laid back atmosphere
5- Vegas

Guess I'm a real league player. This Fall, I'll be playing APA every other week on Monday. The alternating week will be BCAPL. Tuesday is APA in Rochester and BCAPL / ACS when in Vegas. Wednesday is BCAPL in Rochester and VNEA in Vegas. Going to try to qualify for the five National events in Vegas. Must be crazy!

Forgot to mention 8 Ball only!

There are lots of different kinds of league play. I consider the Joss Tour, Mezz Tour, Predator Tour all leagues. People pay a membership fee to play and you see a lot of the same players all the time.

And of course there are weekly bar leagues too. I play Tap about every other week now...since you can only play one 7 handicap player per night. My team has two 7 handicap players.:frown:

It's not any of the regular big name leagues, just a local thing but it's all we have so
it's better than nothing.

I tried league for one season and it wasn't a fit for me only playing 3 games a night that mattered. I really enjoyed the competition and loved the group of guys on our team. The problem is with my work schedule I only have 2 nights a week that I can play in tournaments/league and for me, I prefer tournaments.

League

I play an 8 ball in house league on Monday nights. I tried an APA 8 ball league...never again. The only reason I play is a friend of mine can meet me an hour or two before and we play right up until league starts. I play on his team because I like the company, have a beer and a few laughs. I believe it has NOTHING to do with the league. Too much drama.

APA Masters and APA Double Jeopardy (8-ball and 9-ball at the same time with the same team). The two nights are very different.

My masters team is pretty competitive, and there are some other good players on the other teams, so it's entertaining to watch some of the matches. Masters also doesn't take long since it's only 3 races to 7 and everyone on my team plays well enough to B&R a rack or two on the way there.

Doubly jeopardy is more of a social night for me, but I still enjoy it. I know I'm not going to see much good pool, but I enjoy coaching and seeing other players trying to improve. Only a few of the 8-ball matches I play during the session will even be close, but the 9-ball spot is enough to make it a challenge if I'm playing someone who's shooting well for their rank or if I come out of the gate too slow.

APA pretty much dominates this area, so I haven't got to try the BCAPL or VNEA formats and am a bit suspicious of the in-house leagues.

used to play league a few years back and for the most part had a positive and fun experience with it. now that i have the time again i am thinking of taking it up again. debating on which league i want to join.

Just a little...

I play APA 8-Ball on Thursdays , APA 9-Ball on Tuesdays and 2 APA Masters teams (for different operators, staggered weeks). Sundays are NAPA.

The Masters are my favorite, because they are even-up with no handicap, so there is no nonsense.

I used to play BCA, before it was BCAPL, and have also played ACS.
