Are You Posters Really That Good?

Hey DrCue. My 4 pack was a phenom. It has and will probably never EVER happen again. Although I wish it would. Doh! Sometimes I'll break and start running out and start to realize that I'm doing it and get so caught up in that realization that I screw up the runout. That's what it's been ever since. sigh

4 pack    damn beaten by a gurlll! Oh the shame the shame. :(

Jude and Fred are exactly right. No one will come here and post, "Hey check this out: I had a regular night last night. Played some 1P and broke even, ran out 1 rack in my 8 ball match, drank a bunch and then went home." But if someone beats Mika in a tournament or strings together a 5 pack, then they might talk about out it.

So there's a big selection bias: you don't read about people's average games, just their best ones (and sometimes worst.)

But there's still a good chance that there's a lot of BS mixed in, too.

LOL, that's pretty much what I wrote about last Friday when someone asked who played that night! I said something like, 'There was nobody there and nothing to do so I played hee-haw with a friend. I played like ass, he played great and I went home.'

i did a 3 pack once, but it was a 2 pack then a 9 on the break. complete fluke for the 3rd one. my 27 in straight pool was because the break shot worked out just right without getting me stuck in the rack like usual.

Gooder One,

I ain't saying that i am the best player in the world when i post or add what my thoughts are on topics, just my opinions and tricks of the trade i pick up around the way. Maybe to my family and friends, i am that good as i say hehe. Cole.

SERIOUS REPLIES ONLY, PLEASE

thanks,

Serious replies only? Why? Your question is ridiculous. The fact that you are spending time worrying about whether someone has done what they say they did is pretty frivolous in my opinion.

Unless you are transacting with someone there is no need to care whether they are credible or not.

I once questioned whether somebody who posted on RSB beat Steve Cook 55 games of one pocket in a seemingly ridiculously small amount of time. I met the guy. Turns out he's THAT good and his story was indeed verified.

So, whether someone actually did what they claim or they want to simply be more than they are for their own personal reasons, there is no need to attempt to validate the claims UNLESS you are trying to match up with them or do business.

And furthermore, if you look closely a lot of the feat threads are what is the most you have done type of thing. I ran five racks on Ronnie Wiseman and LOST 11:5. Does that make me a pro or a pro rack boy?

John - has racked more than anyone on AZB :-)

Jude hit the nail on the head. Its also the reason that almost every pool player I know (myself included) tends to over rate their game. We remember the way we played one night and think thats the way we should always play. As an example of what Jude is talking about I can tell you that my high number of racks ranin a row on a nine foot table is 5. Funny thing is this happend MANY years ago, I play much better now than I did then and I cant remember the last time I strung 3 together LOL.

Im not saying that there are not good players that post here, there are some very talented people that post on this board.

Most of the people on this board, myself included, have a life other than just pool. I think that this causes one to be inconsistent with their pool game. I also think that people that stick with pool for a while probably have some natural talent for the game. When I played in the service, I always played better than my buddies and we would all have the same amount of time in on the game. I just had a natural aptitude for the game I guess. That said, sometimes the stars are lined up and the moon is full and we get lucky or are in the zone and wallah, we have a stellar moment.

I've run 5 racks of 9 ball on two separate occasions and yet on any given day, I'm lucky to run one rack. I was rated a 96 in the USPPA about 4 years ago and now I'm struggling to be a 77. And the really sad thing about that is I'm finally retired and can spend much more time on my game. Unfortunately, I'm probably too damn old to get any better. Ah the "Golden Years", I just love them!

ok, this was touched upon briefly in another post, so i thought i would get straight to the point. cut to the chase here.

some of the "Feats" that posters on here say they have done makes me think there are a lot of extremely good players that post here. and it also makes me think "Gee, Why Arent They A Pro? Or Playing In Big Time Pro Tournaments?" if they are that capable?

i guess my question is - are you posters really that good? running 5 racks in a row is quite a feat, not losing a match in 55 tries is quite impressive, and so forth and so on.

or is there alot of BS that goes on here by posters and their abilities?

You can come to Alexandria VA, but you gotta post up to find out! ;)

I think that the main diffence between pros and good players is the how consistent they can play.I am a decent player, most likely top 10 in my area.I am a 7 in apa and a 100 game winner in bca.I have ran a 5 pack in 9 ball {several 4's}.A 8 pack in eight ball.I have played over my head many times. When you play over your head it shows you how you can play if everything is going your way.But again does not mean that you are suppose to play that way.Like I said earlier I am top 10 in my area,But I have beat everyone of them even.

ROFL ... Evidently John, you never took racking lessons .... lol
Remember, the flip side to breaking is racking, just ask Cory Deuel ... <smile>
That would be disappointing though after doing a 5 pack ..

From a b player...

On a scale of one to ten I see myself as a five. On the d c b a scale I rank myself as a low b. I have won 8 ball tournaments, but amongst a field of drunks. I began playing straight pool this summer and have only been able to run 31 balls. I have been playing 9-ball for a year and a half in which time I have pulled off a three pack only 4 times. Anything above that includes 9 on the break or easy combinations.

The best explanation for not so great players like myself pulling off a 3 pack that I have ever read comes from Bob Byrne. He says that statistically speaking anyone can pull off a three pack given enough attempts. This explains how people can go on a three day rush in poker and in the span of one hour bust completely out. My three packs were a result of 3 great breaks where I sank 3 balls or more and was left with an easy out. Does this mean I break well? No... It means I lucked out. As stated by previous posters I would never write a post about how I miss the easy shot or blow a simple out with ball in hand. Byrne says it much better than me and I am tired of typing.

Awake or Dreaming...

DrCuesProtege',

I agree that you can't believe everything you read, especially on the Internet, couple that with Pool Players and who knows?...you may get some 'Big Fish' stories, LOL...but like most people here, I have flights of brilliance on the table...my Break&Run 4 pack was one of those flights...('never wanna come down'), and like Jude, Zeeder and others, I agree if you play long enough and often enough, fantastic things are bound to happen, and while I and most others here will ever go Pro, If I'm on 'MY' Game & in 'MY' Zone I'm hard to beat...that said...I'm a League Hack SL5, and have had nights where I want to set my whole kit on fire! :D

~Keep dreaming and maybe one day when your awake your dreams will come through~

some are guys that work for a living and make too much money to give up for a "chance" to make 80 to 100k on the "pro" circuit....For a few...that would be a pay cut....
How many pro's do you think make 80 to 100 k a yr?

I find that many players that are able to string 9 ball racks can not do the same at the billiards room I play at. The Brunswick tables are tightened pretty good here. Those that could run 100's in straight can only run 80 at best. The only exception is when new felt is put on. I like this because it makes you shoot with greater precision. When we hold the Joss tour, the tables are re-done, so they play easier though still players do not put racks together. So how good you are depends on the equipment also. A six pack in one room may equal only a 3 in another.

I had to read it 3 or 4 times to make sure that he was saying that the pool players make that & not the people that have full time jobs. Once I was sure he was talking about pool players, I had to know which ones were making that kinda dough. Right now there's only one guy on the tour that I can think of that gets enough sponsorship & wins enough money in tourneys to possibly make 50 to 60....maybe. Even looking at the 2005 player money list doesn't give you an idea of what they actually make. Some guys have backers so when they do place in the money, a percentage, usually half, goes to the backer. Figure in travel (plane or car) hotel, & food. I don't know about ya'll but it costs me more to take a weekend trip than it does to sit at home & go to work all week....why? Because I'm using more gas, eating out, & paying for a hotel. Imagine if that were your life & on top of it you had to pay $200 to $500 to get into the tourney that you just spent a fortune getting to. 80 to 100K...pipe dream.
