Are you worthless without your playing cue ?

Not really. I made a point to be equally skilled with a bunch of different cues. Unfortunately, that's worthless :(

I'm with you. If travelling for work, I just pack a piece of 1500 grit sandpaper, a tip tapper, and a good piece of chalk and then go to work on the local house cue :)

The places you play must have pretty nice house cues. I used to carry a piece of 600 wet or dry for smoothing shafts and some 180 grit for shaping tips. You gotta be slick though — the houseman generally frowns on such things.

I played off the wall for many a year. Now I'm not talking about that fiber glass crap they have now days. A real wood cue, not a problem. All I need is a tool to shape and scuff the tip.

I used to use the grout cracks at a hall that had tile floors to surreptitiously shape tips. ;)

I'm not good enough to rely on my playing cue.... or maybe that means I am good enough?

Lol, it does feel weird to switch. I came in the money at a bar tournament recently. Ran out to the 8 with a petrified leather tip and shit chalk against the tournament director. Every one gets lucky (especially those who practice).

Ian ------- really bad at hustling...

+1 on keeping the basic "tools" in the car. As long as I can find a house
cue with a usable tip, I'm good to go for casual play and cheap bar
tournaments. Big Tourneys are another story, especially 14.1 .

I've beat friends at home with a 2x4 lol so for me I can swap pretty easy from one cue or another but I will say there's things I do better with mine

You know the one you play with and really like.

Say you had to play with another cue, are you close to being worthless ?
Unless, of course you spend a lot more time with that cue ?

I used to play with a standard McDermott for many years.
A couple years back I switched toa Cuechanger cue which has an LD shaft.

Last year I forgot my cue in my other car and it was 80 miles away so I
thought I would simply borrow my buddies McDermott. Boy, was that a
bad decision. I was missing every 2nd shot that had any kind of sidespin on
it. Before I knew it I was down 7-1 in a race to 9. I finally adjusted to the cue
and got back to 8-8 but lost the final game, that really, really hurt.

Small positive note was the 2nd match was 8-ball race to 7 and I was down
6-3 but won the match 6-7.

I have also played a match with a friends Predator 314-2 and while the feeling
was different at least the deflection was similar and I did OK with that cue.

I prefer to have something familiar but some of the best pool I have ever played was with a wallabushka.

I went to the bar where they have weekly league just to talk to a few friends and have a beer. I had no intention to play but my friend asked if I would help him warm up before his league started. I grabbed a cue off the wall that had seen its better days. The butt was cracked, the tip was horrible and it felt like it had been drug behind a pickup down a long gravel road. I was afraid to roll it on the table as I may have poked an eye out.

I expected nothing from this cue. So with no expectations, I just played. I relied on myself instead of the cue. We played fantastic with several break and runs. I still wanted my own cue but realized it is still mostly the Indian and not the arrow.

Not worthless but my net worth does take a significant hit.

I'm equally worthless with any cue right now, but as I get better I'm sure that having a familiar cue is a benefit. But, I do want to be able to comfortably grab a house cue and play decently which is one reason I hesitate when it comes to LD shafts. I don't like the idea of getting good with a LD sat only to or be able to feel comfortable with a standard cue.

The first time I beat the 10-ball ghost I was using a friends Meucci 97-10 with a red dot shaft. It was a prop bet that I couldn't beat the ghost without my cue and I did. IIRC, I won 7-5 or 7-6.

So, I'd say no, I'm not "worthless" without my player, but I'm also not as comfortable.

Actually, back when there was actual 'hustlin', you would lose all the easy action walking into a strange bar or pool room with a good cue or even a good case! I made that mistake a few times. I walked into the mis-cue lounge in fort lauderdale in 1976 with my cue in its fellini case. After 2 days of no action, the house man said, 'no one here is going to play a guy with a fellini case'! The only action I got was bank pool for $50 a game with Hawaiian Brian, which I didnt like!
lol...now that's real

Hah!
The old Schon has a more playable taper and makes it easier to pocket and stroke ?
Has old micarta ferrule ?

Interesting...I can play almost as good with any other cue I have at home including dufferins, it is just THAT Tad.. Are you saying it could be attributed to the taper?

Hell, I'm worthless with my spare shaft on my playing cue. It's about 1/2mm bigger, but deflects like its 2mm bigger. Not really sure what is going on with it, but it would take me weeks to adjust to it. Well, right now it would take me years to adjust to it since I only play a few times a year. :o

I'm close to the same with most cues. For the money, I prefer the familiarity of my own, but I'll use anything playing cheap.

To clarify.. I used a Z2 shaft for a while, but would usually use one of two sticks at the bar when I didn't bring my own. One night, I ran 3, broke dry and ran out after opponent's first shot, then ran another and continued to run out pretty well the rest of the night with the bar cue. My high run prior was also 3, but it just felt so much more natural with that cue. After that, I had the cue cut and have been using it as my primary cue for almost a year and a half.

one of the worst ways to wreck your game....learn to play with anything

How so?
