Asian 9-Ball Update: I'm disappointed at Wu...

I was watching the last game (due to work) of the Asian 9-Ball Quarterfinals between Wu Chia Ching (the 16yr old boy wonder) against a relatively unknown Ricky Yang of Indonesia.

Wu was down 6-7 and had a golden opportunity to go 7-all. Instead of capitalizing on Ricky's mistakes, Wu was committing unforced errors one after the other. They where on the money ball on rack 14th and had 3 turns each, before Ricky sunk the 9 on his 3rd turn to get to the hill. The next rack, Ricky took it to win the match. What a disappointment Wu was.

BTW, this Ricky Yang guy came into the Quarterfinals by beating Chao Fong Pang 9 to 3.

Wu had such a bad luck that from the 6 to 9, he unfortunately married the CB with the money ball without a shot. Wu played a safety and Ricky missed a table length bank. What Wu missed was his next shot, near table length relatively straight-in crossed shot, wherein the CB was on the bottom left long rail on the lip of the packet, while the 9 was about 3 to 4 inches away from the top right packet.

(Wanted to show the shots missed using Cuetable, but the application kept on crashing.)

The Semis tomorrow will pair 2 Indonesians:

Ricky Yang vs Muhammad Zulfikri

and the other pair a Japaneses against a Pinoy:

Masaaki TANAKA vs Efren Reyes

I like Efren

Efren is playing well as of late - Reno IPT for $500,000.00 - check and trophy is in the mail.

Wu really hasn't done as well as most would have thought. However by making it to the semi's, Efren is guaranteed to finish the tour in 1st again. I believe that makes it 4 years in a row. He is simply amazing.

I'm sure every great player has had to go through their share of growing pains. Maybe this is what happened with Wu, something to be expected from a teenager playing on the highest level against some of the best in the world. This Ricky Yang guy slaughtered Chao 9-3, so he can obviously play a little himself and may have even caught Wu by surprise at the start of the match.

Wu ...

Wu is good for a 17 year old. You can be smart and play well when you are young, but it takes years of experience to be wise. That's why many of the young guns do well before they run into a real smart older player that has the experience and knowledge to defeat them.

Many young players come up quickly in the ranks when they are young, and I have noticed they may even go through a period where they are 'shooting in the clouds' which can run from 6 months to 2 years, which at the end they settle back down into the real reality of their level, and have to gradually work themselves back up in the ranks, this time thinking a little more than they had to do the first time.

I've said this before, but it bears repeating ...

Wu should go to these tournaments with Ric Flair as his manager...

According to the Asian 9-ball tour site Efren finished the year in 1st in 03,04+05. Maybe they have it wrong? Either way I'm still impressed, simply because of the strong field of competitors this tour always has. http://www.espnstar.com/asian9ball/asian9ball_playerdetails_554942.html

maybe in rankings(seed) but last year San Miguel tour had 4 venues which Yang accumulated more points than Reyes here it is :

The matches between Efren and Yang are always very high quality, but it's a pity they met too early this leg. It's a damn shame Yang is always unluckier than his opponents this year.
