Asians and Large Shafts???

If you're talking about those Taiwanese players, IMO they're trying to do things text book. They probably researched everything scientifically and play based on what is technically correct, relinquishing their personal preferences. In America, or like, we do what we want and what feels good to us. In China, they do what their told.

I myself am an Asian from the South which makes me a strokin' okie and I play with 12.75mm.

I know that in Japan, everybody that I knew would immediately sand their shafts down when they got a new cue. So, what I've seen based on my experience with Japanese players doesn't seem to point to fatter shafts. If anything, the Japanese that I know perfered a smaller diamater.

I dont know if it true with the Asian players..but a very good pool player told me the reason why he likes to play with a 13 or better shaft is because it help him find and hit center ball better. He says that having the small tips allows you to impart more spin but is harder to find and stay on center... Now i can see where Asian players would like the center ball issue becasue they focus so much on having the right angle to get to the next ball with just center hit...The players from the philip. love to impart spin on their ball.. but who am i..im just a banger hahaha

Lol...

Wow out of all places I never thought I'd see a thread on here about Asians having thick shafts. Haha. All jokes aside, my pops who was raised in the Philippines playing pool stated that he is used to playing with thicker shaft cues becasue that's what they used at all the places he played pool at when he was growing up. I'm assuming he was referring to all the house cues. But to tell you the truth , almost all the pool rooms you go to in the Phils have regular beat up house sticks with shatfs that measure a little over 13mm. Maybe that's what they are all used to? Maybe? Who knows right? Different regions are known for different styles of play.

I live in Xiamen where a lot of Taiwanese pros play and coach and I haven't seen any tendency towards thicker shafts. The shaft sizes I notice are pretty much the same gamut as in the USA. I think that the "fat" shaft is just a way to bring to market a 13mm Predator shaft without "admitting" that they should have had one on the market since the beginning.

What about Yang Ching Soon and Ko Pin Yi? ;)

What about them? If one or the other pro player uses something doesn't mean that all members of that person's race uses that same thing. I don't go around measuring the player's shafts but I do see what people are using and more importantly what's for sale. There is no "fat shaft" market here specifically.

What I think is that there are/were some unauthorized or outright knockoffs of Predator shafts hitting the market that are 13mm and Predator has to account for them and account for people actually liking them.

That is just pure speculation but the people I see playing with Predator cues seem to have normal Predator shafts on them.

One guy I know here is a 13 on the local handicap rating, the highest level. He shoots with a Universal shaft that's 11mm. Should I make the inference that all 13 level players prefer smaller diameter shafts?

Is deflection not reduced by taking the whip or whippiness out of the shaft?

In other words if I had a 17mm standard shaft and a 12.75 mm predator shaft would the predator have less deflection than the 17mm shaft?

Kevin

Kevin,
The Predator Z-2 Shaft and the OB 2 Cue shaft are 11.75MM but have a cone shaped taper and are not whippy. They are quite stiff IMO. Like what others have said, the reduction in end mass is what makes a shaft have less cue ball deflection.

I believe Royce made some very informative statements about LD shafts.

Are you guys sure it is Asians that are known for a fat shaft, I have always heard it differently.............I am sorry but I couldn't resist any longer and I know I'm not the only person that had this thought.......On the serious side anytime you are looking at something specific to an area take into consideration the market place in America right now for example a Searing cue is desirable if there were thousands of them available then many players would have one and someone may say why are all the Americans playing with Searing Cues. So maybe it is not specific to a particular ethnic group as much as it is derived from something in the market place.....Maybe one of the top players is using a Fat Shaft and we are witnessing a fad of sorts or something to that effect.

I guess it's common in Japan and Taiwan.
But, in the Philippines, they like it really thin.

Me neither. That's just gross.

I was making a somewhat feeble attempt at humor in the first line, although everyone is so sensitive these days I didn't want to offend anyone the second half of my post is meant to offer an opinion the first line is a joke based on the stereo type that Asian men may not have the largest wieners. Personally I don't know or care but speaking for myself all stereo types aside I've always said it aint very big around but it sure is short, however, it satisfies my everytime, and I am a white guy. Anyone reading this should understand that I harbor no ill will towards anyone and I think everyone had the joke run through their mind when they read the title of this thread. I just had the courage to comment on it. Anyways back to reality I really don't see any reason that any ethnic group would find one shaft to be different from another. So again I think that something else, probably marketing that is the influencing factor.

I have a 314-2 & ob1 for my JW.
Last night I played better with the
13mm JW shaft that came with the cue-9 footer.
For me it's about the table size and rail response.
7-8 footers low deflection shaft works best for me.
Long shots on 9 footers I like my standard 13mm.

I don't know about the statement that most Asians prefer thicker shafts, because I know Filipinos don't do that. However in Taiwan a lot of players do like shafts that're at least 13mm, a trend brought about by Yang Ching Shun, THE superstar of pool in Taiwan who started his pro career early with a Southwest, and as people would know, Southwest makes thick shafts.
