Ask the Cuemaker topic

What about Joint sizes? Whats the smallest joint you have used and how did it effect the play of the cue? I have been trying to stay at .850, but I let one get away from me while trying to even the points and ran under due to lack of brain cells or may have been the scotch that night.

Darn I just had a thought. If I have more than one drink while alone in the shop, does that mean I need to seek medical treatment? Crap trying to learn to build cues has turned me into an alcoholic! To hell with auto clear! Now I have to worry about my liver too!:(

Joint sizes.. well you know.. like a Cheech and Chong special will do the trick.. lol Anyways.. I had a titlist Gus and the joint was small, .830 ish, and it played very solid. One mans crappy hitting cue is another man's Balabushka. As someone who has had the privilege of having just about every cuemakers cue, at least those with 5 years of service, on the planet I will say, when I test hit a cue I listen for the obvious. Tings, pings, clacks, buzzes, if none of these exist, then the cue hits solid. Joint size might be relevant depending upon what you do with the taper.

i stay between .840 and .850 also.

my friend ordered a muecci power piston custom. it was all reversed ...

anyways the joint was like .825. i told him to send it back bc it hit like a rubberband. they wouldnt take it back bc it was "CUSTOM ORDER"

i dont know if it hit bad bc it was a toothpick or bc it was a meucci. shaft was laminated

That is Meucci's standard size. Most that I have checked before refinishing run between .820 and.830.

Well we are not going very far on the topic of joint size so someone needs to come up with something else if this thread is to continue, or I may be forced to bring up Dead cue makers, ivory, show pictures of broken forearms or start a discussion on A-Joint construction methods. Someone? Anything else?

Forgive my question if it sounds dumb, because I don't really know you.

Are you seriously looking for conflict, or seriously looking for helpful information, or a little of both?

This begs the question of why to continue to beat this dead horse?
He ain't gettin up.

I don't think he's looking for info either as no specific question has been asked.

There is no defined topic in this thread so start a new one. Just be careful what you wish for.

I don't know either, but kind of an odd time of year for that with peace on earth and all, and if that is the true intent, then It sounds like something more suited for the NPR section.;) No one around here needs any help with conflict threads as recent events have shown. This time of year alot of people are on edge as It is, and for anyone that has lost or misses friends or family during the holidays, the reminder of that on their mind this time of year only makes It worse. I'm not saying anyone should be flamed for starting such a thread if it was just in good fun, just that if that is the intent, that it is a bad time of year, and the wrong section for It IMO.

This thread was just started for fun during the holidays, but if you feel just the mention of these topics and some of the stupity that has gone along with some of it.... Flame away. As stated at the start of this I was just looking to for a start of something to discuss during a little break during the holidays.

It was not my intention to cause a conflict. If you feel that my jest of some of these posts is out of line, I must apologize. But if you look at how a simple topic or someones honest request for info or differing opinon is sometimes met with hostility and character Assassination, and dont see some of the humor in it than you may need to step back and reevaluate your life.

I would love to see more actual posts on some major construction issues. Some of the best info ever discussed in this forum on several occasions has been lost or locked out by moderators due to some parties inability of carrying on a decent topic without degrading to personal attacks.
Some topics seem to be taboo as someone might say the wrong thing.

I know you may not know me and I am just another new guy here, but that does not diminish my possible knowledge or my opinion of what a cue should be or how it should play after 40 years of being a player.

so CAN this topic and I ask the moderators to lock it out and I'll refrain from posting any ideas for discussion or inputing a little humor in anyone else post.

Thanks and have a great Holiday!:)

For those that don't know who I am. I am a new guy still trying to learning something about this art, and I may not ever become a decent cue builder,
But I may have hit balls with more cuemakers cues and have a little knowledge and of course my personal opinon, as what makes one feel right than some out there. You are welcome to come down here and PLAY sometime. You may not like your end of it on the table. I may never make a cue worth @#%$^%, but I can still run out.
All in fun Gentleman, all in fun.

it is clear to me that you started the post looking for info and with good intentions and i didn't see any posts that looked otherwise.

Hello Dan, nice to meet you. If this post is directed toward me, it is a little over the top. I have no problem with humor, and I have no idea why my question would make you refrain from posting any ideas or inputing humor in the future.

I asked a reasonable question in a reasonable way about your intent, and I don't think it merited a response suggesting I reeavluate my life or challenging me to the losing end of a grudge match.

Kelly

No offense taken Kelly from your post. And I hope you did not take my response was directed at You, It was just a general observation. I just was stating my intention of the orignial post and that if it was thought of causing conflict, then I apologize again. :)

And the end of my post I was just stating a little info on who I was and no hard feeling to you or anyone here. we can always agree or disagree and we may get into some future heated topics but I hope we will always respect each others view points and when we walk away from a discussion we will hold no grudge. It is sometimes hard online to understand the post was in fun and not a serious attack on someone. So again, I hope -no harm, no foul.:)

Nice to meet You dan, and Welcome.

No foul here if meant in good fun, which seems to be the case. Everyone's point of view is welcome, no matter what level. I believe all discusion is good, and everyone has something of value to offer.

I think the reason the question was even asked, is because even in a joking way, It's hard to tell sometimes what the true intent is. People sometimes start threads that are simular with what ends up seeming like the intent was to actually stir the pot up.

If the intent was to lightnen people up, well I admitt that It is good intentioned. I know I could stand to do the same sometimes Myself.;) :)

Again Welcome to the board. If I can ever be of help, let me know. I'm not a seasoned pro like some of these guys, but I've been at it for alittle while, and I know alittle as the song goes.:D

Welcome

Let me add my Howdy to a new member.

Besides Chris Hightower's book and videos, I've learned more from this forum than anywhere else. Here's hoping the free (and friendly) exchange of information continues.
