Assistance for Junior Player

Hi, all! Thanks for reading this...

I have been working with a Junior player a bit lately and he seems to have the talents for the game. He is, however, without decent equipment, an I told him that I would ask here if anyone could help him out.

He needs a cue, and is looking at some really crappy ones in magazines. If anyone has one laying around that they might be able to extend to him, at a good price- not free- I can promise that it would be greatly appreciated. I would hate to see the kid spend $200+ on an eBAY equivalent crapper.

The boy and his family do not have computers, so there is no real foundation for valuing cues there. I really want to help him out and, again, we are not looking for a handout, rather a bargain.

We talked quite a bit last night about what he wants and I gave my input about what I thought he might expect. Here's where we ended up:

-No wrap
-19oz
-2 shafts, 12.5-12.75 ferrules
-he wants some ringwork or inlays at butt.

I am a big advocate of buying off of Ebay.... Here is one that he might be able to get... I would like to own it myself:

They have a wide variety from Joss, McDermott, Meucci... etc... He will get the most cue for his money, and though it will be a starter cue, he will have time for his game to develop and in a few years, he will eventually find a custom cue that he likes.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Judd, as well as your input. While I have certainly bought a few cues from the 'bay, I will go on record as sying...IMO, there are no good deals on eBay.

But, re: that cue, it is sweet! I want it for me! I've seen it, or it's stable-mate, more than once for auction, makes me wonder how many he made, or what is wrong with the one he made...I bet it goes for >$300.

Walt go to my web site. I donate 3-4 Qs a year & am already at my limit, but I do have a few in the $250-$300 range coming up, that I could give him a $100 discount on. By the way, if this turns out to be for you, I have a new 45 that I haven't shot anyone with yet & I need to sight it in on somebody...JER
 
You are entirely incorrect about there being NO good deals on Ebay! I have been on the selling end of 3 good cue deals, and the receiving end of 2. I would not trade the Black Boar I just bought for ANYTHING! The guy played with it for 24 hours or less (he claimed). I said "oh, sure!" until I saw the cue. Brand new condition. Straight as an arrow. Sweet deal. 'Nuff said!

I just think that with careful buying and waiting for the right cue... you can find a screaming deal that your student will be crazy over. Good luck!

Is the 45 a new model? I have not heard of it, but have been aware of your cuse for a while now...what? .45?!?! Look out!! Hilarious!!

I can assure you that the cue is not for me. In fact, I will take this opportunity to state that whatever arrangements are to be made- actual cue, $ transfer, shipping, etc...- with be hammered out between the kid (or his Dad, the one that is old enough to work!) and the cue sender. Like I alluded in the top post, they are only vaguely aware that the internet exists
