At what point is smoking bad for business?

I just left Ohio where smoking has been banned since 2006. I'm now in Florida where smoking is still allowed in bars (which of course includes pool rooms).

In 1965, the percentage of US adults that smoked was about 42%. By 2012, it had come down to about 18%:

http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancer...about-smoking-tobacco-and-health-how-many-use

That means that today about 4 out of 5 people do not smoke and presumably don't want to be in businesses where smoke is prevalent. So are we at the point where smoke is keeping more people out of pool rooms than if smoking is banned?

If 18% is still not low enough, at what point is it bad business to allow smoking in pool rooms?

It must be banned inside all indoor places; for sake of workers (bar tenders, waitresses, admin..etc) health, as well as none smokers. Lately i have seen smokers so good, they actually go outside to smoke even with the smoking allowed inside because they are becoming a minority, that is hated when the light up!

trying living in nyc, where a pack of smokes go for $15, the last thing on your mind is business, i have to pay through the roof to kill myself, how retarded am I? between the cost and being outcast into the winds, literally sometimes, my only focus is quitting sometime soon, and walking into a poolhall and not have it smelling like an ashtray is nice, I must say. the only problem is someimes you really need a dragbefore you bear down on tha long cut shot.

I remember going to the SBE for the first time. Smoking was allowed then.
My brother and I marveled at the skills of all the players.
We always joked "maybe we should start smoking and we will play better" lol
Well, we never started and we still stink!

Wait he does smoke occasionally now. And I regularly whoop him.
Myth busted....

Holy crap....$15 a pack.....so even a one pack a day habit is a nice car payment....2 packs a day could put u in a top of the line Lexus instead ;)

That's gotta be reason enough to quit

Seriously. Someone could make a good payday packing a U-Haul full of cartons from down here (~$5.50/pack) and driving them up there. Not sure the penalty for the federal offense would be worth it though.

More than a carton's worth of e-cigarette juice costs about as much as one pack of cigs does in NY

Smoking is bad for your health.
If you are laying in a bed at a cancer institute, or having a stent installed in your left circumflex, then you obviously aren't playing pool.
That's bad for business.

If they were "poolplayers" they'd be there to play pool! Seems more like they're smokers hanging out at a pool room.
I quit playing completely for 3yrs cause of smoking, I have a table at home now, plus the state I'm in is smokefree :)

hard to say what smoking costs

There are quite a few people like my brother. He enjoyed playing pool in his younger years, played a lot. He refuses to play at all now because of smoking. I don't play near as much as I would like to because I'm not going to drop in the hall to play for an hour or two and then have the drill of all clothes go in the washing machine when I come in the door and I head to the shower to get it out of my hair and skin. When we aren't around smoke constantly it makes it really nasty when we get in concentrated smoke. Everything sticky and covered with tar is another issue.

I do think the day is coming when every workplace is smoke free. I couldn't run a machine putting out the level of pollution a large room full of smokers emits. Smoke eaters help some, high ceilings are a big help but that is kinda hard to have since most pool halls are repurposed buildings that have affordable leases. Low ceilings are much more common in these buildings than high ones.

The real issue from a business standpoint is that some smokers will go away or sharply reduce their time in a pool hall if smoking is banned. Nonsmokers won't rush in to fill the void, a new customer base has to be built. Any business struggling already is gonna be toast.

even before the laws went into effect many non smokers stopped going to smoking places which started part of their decline. then the bad economy hit and both slowed coming into places where their disposable money would be spent. which smokers have less of for many reasons, not including the money wasted on the product.
smoking is a sad addiction just like drinking or drugs is or can be. all sides defend their side of it.

much of the reason for banning smoking was so that the employees werent forced to breath it. and saying they could go elsewhere also doesnt work. that is why we have govt. safety standards in the workplace.

My mom died young/Pall Malls lung cancer, a good friend of mine, I'll be attending his funeral in five days he was a Heavy smoker, lymph cancer. He made it to 63 yr old. Pretty sad to see him Fri. after Turkey day, cut open, stapled up at the top of his spine. We spent a couple hours together, he passed the next day, WOW.

My sister only made it to 41 before she got lung cancer, she was dead before she turned 44. She was a 3 pack a day smoker, but so was my mom and it she made it till late 50 before the illnesses kicked in, and she was dead at 65. Just a few of examples of the many in my family history..all grand parents died the same way except grand father , he was a smoker too but got hit by a taxi before he was 50, never met him.

So where did the smoking Pool players go? Did they stop playing because they cant smoke?

A lot of places thatwere open for playing, close because of the recession, and new smoking laws.

Arizona's ecomoney is not as other places, but let say I am glade I am not in the work force looking for a job.

One of the larger municipal fire departments in the vally open up five rookie positions recently. Lady I knmow who works in their HR support section told me they had 3500 inquiries, and sent out over 1500 application packages to those who met the initial screening.

BTW Wal-Mart, and other entry level service places are hiring if you want to work for minimum wage.

I always choose no smoking places. There are many places I won't go because I will smell like an ashtray afterwords.

To throw my two cents in, as a smoker I still hate cigarette/cigar smoke filled bars. I despise even being in someone's house when they smoke indoors. Is it enough to keep me from going somewhere? Not necessarily. However, if there's two bars in an area, one smoking and one non-smoking, unless the smoking bar has something enticing that the other doesn't--I'll be going to the non-smoking bar and will gladly step outside to smoke all night.

Any time you do something that affects people around you, there will be potential problems. Smoking is an obvious example as it is proven to be bad for your health and second hand smoke is even worse. So it`s not like having a pop or a beer, where you choose what to have and only you feel the effects of what you consume.
Smoking affects people around you and it`s obvious that it should be a habbit confined to the outdoors.
The smell problems and the yellowing effect on everything the smoke comes in contact with is as I see it a extra problem for the pool room owner.

My Mom is a lung cancer surviver and she was a heavy smoker. She did not hang out in any smoke filled poolroom. I did lose a close friend in a snowmobile mishap. I also lost a friend in a scuba diving accident. I don't get your point.

Poolcentre Ozebi and club 8 have a good solution: seperate a part of the room from the rest. Built some (thin) walls to seperate it from the room and add glass so the people can see the tables.

This ofcourse does cost an investment to build and costs space.

Inside the smoking room are comfortable chairs, and tables with stools. And even nice for a smoker: its so well ventilated that it doesnt smell like smoke real bad.
