I have a student who wants to meet me in Columbus, OH this Friday for a several hour lesson. I'm interested in suggestions for a poolroom to conduct this lesson in. Obviously we're looking for somewhere reasonably quiet during the day, and perhaps somewhere that opens fairly early (no later than noon).
Can anyone suggest some places? Names and phone numbers would be appreciated! Thanks ahead of time!

I lived in columbus for a year...this is THE BEST room in the town. Hell, it's better than the rooms in DFW.

cornfeds

On Columbus, from a former Buckeye!:

Corenfed Reds is a great spot for action, terrible spot for lessons!
Way too many wannabe (and real) sharks and distractions!
Depending on what part of town you're in;

Northwest, Fats Billiard Emporium at Bethel & Sawmill. Great spot!

Central/Campus, Chalkies at Olentangy & Ackerman. Great spot, especially early hours. 20-something 9ft Diamonds! Scott Dunning is the owner and an avid cue collector. More than a few of cues are in the BB.

Northwest & Southwest, Pockets, a nice array of bar boxes, never short on action. Dee Adkins & Corey Duell are bred in these places.

Central North east, Nicks (Oakland & Cleveland). Cover you ass and watch your wallet!!! Sharks abound in this place! If it's still around.

Southside, anywhere, Cornfeds. Rediculous. Period.

Have not been home to the home-state in years, but pretty much every bar has descent bar-box players. No shortage of gamblers anywhere.

Lessons can be taught anywhere as well.

Also, if it gets late, check out Arlington Billiards & Cafe (Northwest) at Henderson & Reed. Great lil' spot, with some hot arse chicks!

Anywhere you go, don't tell them Phill sent you, or you might get tossed out on your ear!!!!! :)

Enjoy. And if anyone asks you for a game, text page me quickly for a heads up!!!!

Scott,

I would agree that Cornfed's is a very nice room. Been there for tournaments a few times and it is a pretty nice joint.

If you come through Dayton which is only a 90 minutes south of Columbus, I'd be happy to feed you if you have some free time and want to hit a few racks. The Koontz basement is always open to you.. You have my number.

Peace, Joe

Thank You!

Thanks everyone, for the quick replies. I've been to Cornfed's many times, and it is not the place for serious instruction...too many distractions. The last time I was there, the police were called to break up a 'distraction'. It sounds like Chalkie's might fill the bill nicely. I'll give Scott Dunning a call, and see what he says.

Thanks for the invite Joe...not sure if I'll make it over your way this time, but certainly soon!

I believe Chalkie's closed last year.

Players is very quiet if you want to stay on the east side.

Cornfeds in very quiet on Friday's during the day. It doesn't get rough until night time. They open around 11:30am now.

Sportsmens would be the place to go for the south side.

Cushions would be a good place to go for the upper east side. (I think they open early on Friday's, 11:00am)

BankShoots would be the West Side.

Columbus rooms

Scott,

Suggest you contact Chris Williams (614-989-0680), he is very familiar with the places to play etc. in Columbus area. You can tell him Mark Griffin told you to call. He also knows where all of the Diamonds are located in the area.

Good luck!

Mark Griffin

Thanks Mark! :D I will call Chris today, and get the skinny! Looking forward to seeing you again in Louisville, when Randyg and I do a pool school during the Q Olympics in November! :D

DANG! Cannot believe Chalkies closed! That was a GREAT spot! As far as these other places mentioned, they're kinda in the hood. East side & South side were never good places to be. Try Fats Billiard Emporium on the NW side. Nice joint, 8 & 9(Diamonds) ft. tables, and it's always dead before 7-9PM.
