Hi guys, I am a small pool room owner and have read a lot of owner's comments. I haven't posted much at all. I want to say though, that you two, are hands down my favorite picks for giving the very best common sense and dead on advice I've seen or heard anywhere! Yeah, I know it sounds like I'm kissing ass, but so what. I've used your ideas and have become more successful due to following them. You both just make sense when it comes to business and the pool industry as a room owner. I just wanted to acknowledge you for helping me succeed even though you don't even know me, or even know how much your posts can help all room owners. Some people hoard their hard earned lessons, and others share it. Thanks for sharing yours. If either of you could help me understand what exactly the job of a rack girl is, and how it can actually be profitable after paying her steep pay, plus not be sleazy, I would be very grateful. Sincerely, Jim.

Thanks very much for the kind words Jim. The only job of a rack girl is be a Little sleazy, I do not know any other way to profit from paying someone to rack balls, she has to be so hot that there are lines of guy's waiting to get to her table. Now, personality is a must, however, tight clothing sure would not hurt. Basically Jim, her main job is draw crowds, and that is the only way to justify her pay. Now, this is my perspective of this situation, I do not think that it would be a business enhancer over all, and I would not do it.

I think that time would be better spent by promoting Ladies night, where ladies without a male escort play free and ladies with a male escort are free while the male is charged the single rate. I think this will also serve the same purpose of a rack girl if promoted correctly, and it will only cost some table time.

Now, a strip pool hall would be another thing!!!! This would be like any strip club, except it would be required that the gentleman entering would have to rent a pool table. Now there would be rack girls at every table, and every hour the rack girls would switch to another table. Periodically throughout the night the girls would move to the center of the room and perform pole dances. Now while at the tables performing their duties as rack girls, they could also perform lap dances for individuals at that table for additional tips, just like a strip club. At least once a week you could have a ladies night, and change things up with male striper's.

I do know if you can tell, but I have given this some thought, and I not only think that it could be profitable, I also think if promoted correctly it could be a very big winner.

It is just an idea!! I doubt I would ever really do it.

Good Night Jim!!!!!!!!

they have alot of knowledge which they freely share with us.you will enjoy the many other posts by them too..:)

Thanks Manwon

I appreciate your reply and info. Unfortunately, I'm in California, and I had to quit ladies nights. Several bars in my county were sued for gender discrimination and every bar lost and had to pay big money to the jerks who were the plaintiffs. I personally think it's tragic when guys have to ruin it for all those other people and us owners just trying to promote and market the great game of pool. I'll keep looking for your posts. You have great advice. Thanks, Jim.

i wonder if these lowlife idiots that were suing were the same one's suing for handicap toilets..this was in California too..they were NOT handicapped and would go to small mom and pop stores and restaurants and if the handicap toilets were not just right like hand bar supports ect.they would sue the owners..they put a few small business's out of business by doing this..

You are very welcome.

I am glad to help a fellow business owner. Before I started posting on AZBilliards I learned from attending the BCA trade show how much good advice could be shared. Just talking to other room owners gave me ideas to succeed and I shared my successes with them also. Overall it helps our sport survive in tough economic times. Having other owners to talk to during the bad times is also invigorating and almost therapeutic. Good to have company in the boat...even if it has some leaks.

The whole rack girl idea is better suited for the movies where you dont have to deal with offended customers, drama, and sexual harrassment lawsuits. Honestly over the long run I think it would hurt a business more than help it. After the novelty is gone...its just wasted money.

Also check your state laws for ladies night. Missouri is one of 12 states (last I heard) that has laws forbidding "gender based pricing" Every state interprets the laws differently. I think there are lots of discounts you can offer that are both more respectful and less likely to attract negative attention. Even though we offered ladies specials for 38 years...we still had plenty of complaints...from both men AND WOMEN.

Thank you again for the kind words about myself and Craig Rittel. We are both dedicated to making our sport better for all those involved. Players and owners alike. Craig Rittel has been in my room so many times I feel a trip to Washington is in order sometime to return the favor. :)

I suspect that the only guy's that would complain about Ladies night would have to be Homosexual Transvestites:p . I also suspect that they felt discriminated against because all the ladies looked better than they did!!!!!!!!  :D

Thanks for the kind words Craig, but if anyone is indebted to anyone, I must say that a great deal of what I have accomplished was due to talking with your father. Like I have said in the past, he was great guy, and his influence helped me make my dream come true.

Have a great day!!!!!

Craig

Thank you to all your posts and new responses.

I look forward to reading everyone's postings and continuing to learn and grow from all your generous help. I sincerely hope we can eventually turn pool around, into it's former glory days just after the Color Of Money and legitimise it to all people as an honorable and great sport full of good, clean fun for all. Maybe an organization will clear up pool's image like the PGA did for golf. I also agree with your advice and have decided not to do any rack girl promo. Even if it turned a profit, it would only worsen pool's image as sleasy and seedy. A price I'm not willing to pay just to make a quick buck. Thank you all for your insights. Sincerely Jim Smith (PACIFIC Q BILLIARDS) ENCINITAS CA.

Girls play free?

Yea, I did this. To get around the discrimination thing, I called it lipstick/skirt night. Yes, some guys put lipstick on, a few times. It was actually prety funny.:D

Now that's an idea!!!! and it certainly would be worth it!!!!:D

Some people I knew from Texas came to visit me that run a pool room in San Antonio. They had issues with the Ladies Special (legal) so they had a "SKIRT/Sexy Legs" night. Any person who wears a skirt and shaves their legs gets half price on drinks. So it satisfied the lawyers since it was a special available to EVERYONE. They said guys did it too....so they made sure the entire staff called them Ma'am all night.....If they were THAT desperate to save $1.75 on drinks...they deserved it they thought. It was exactly the sort of thing that I would have done. Kinda disappointed in myself that I didnt do it first.
