ok.....i just ran out of my cartons of cigarettes that i had and just paid $5.00 for a pack of cigarettes............and i am pretty ticked off about it.............i tried to be grown up about it and call Rick Perry to try to reason with him, but was unable to get through. So since he won't accept my calls i am forced to be childish about it. The state hurts my pocket book..............so i hurt theirs back. my plan is simple............if you smoke....stop buying lotto and scratch off tickets. sure its not as dramatic as a bunch of protestors outside the state capitol but i guaruntee if everyone that smokes stops supporting the lottery the effect will be much more profound than a million protestors outside the capitol. and there is no reason to feel guilty, the money from lottery doesnt go to our schools anyway. last year the texas lottery' average sales were just over a million daily. The average daily sales on scratch offs were 7.8 million. The average daily sales on cash 5, pick 3, texas two step and megamillions generate another 2.8 million daily. total that is 11.6 million in daily sales. the state expects to get a little over 1 million daily from the cigarette tax. based on the assumption that half of the people that support the lottery smoke then the state stands to lose 5.8 million daily in lottery sales. I think even Rick Perry can see that those numbers are not in the states favor. And if you dont feel that that is enough.......you can allways do like me and just order your cigarettes from out of state and not pay the tax anyway! Please copy and foward this to everyone in your email address book. I think it would have a more noticable effect if we all boycotted the lottery on a certain day where the state can see the sudden cut in sales. I propose march the 15th.........that should give this email time to circulate through most of texas. thanks James Hanshew jameshanshew@yahoo.com

I don't see how this relates to the game of pool?? There is a NON Pool related section for this type of post. Just a suggestion.

I gotta agree with AZ9baller though, option B sounds like a wiser choice but what do I know.. ;)

IF you want someone to complain to i can give you my moms phone number..she just had her leg amputated due DIRECTLY to the effects of smoking .it finally caught up to her along with lung cancer.now living in a nursing home in a wheel chair the rest of her short life..just think you can be just like her.only thing is these places don't have pool tables !!!!! but you can complain about that when you get there...:(

My $0.02

Quit smoking, your government taxes your cigarettes a deterant. If you don't want to give your government more money than they are intitled to through income and property taxes, don't smoke, don't drink and don't gamble. Sin taxes have always been an easy mark for governments, because they are only taxing something you know is bad for you.

Yes it's your right to do things that are bad for you, just like it's your right to compete for the darwin awards. Doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Well I have a problem with the Government using Taxes to curb the behavior of it's citizens. I'm not a smoker but I don't care if someone does it. It's their choice and they can live with the consequences of it.

As for 2nd hand smoke. If you don't want to inhale it then don't go to a smoking pool hall and/or establishment.

I personally can't stand Smokers who often time are Lottery Players (Tax on Stupid). I don't understand how it can be so hard to pick out a pack of cigarettes. I've had Cigarettes before. Do you know what they taste like? Smoke. I dont' care what "Flavor" they are. Nothing annoys me more than going in to pay for $15 in gas so I can get to my next job and some joker in front of me is there going "Yeah I'll have a pack of Marborlo reds. No not that one. That one. Down to your left. A little lower. Yeah that's it." Then when they get their smokies they start muttering. "I'll also take a Hold-em, jumbo bucks, and how about.... uh. I guess christmas cash and win for life." Then they get $5 in gas and wonder why they are broke.

But just get the Cheapest Cigarettes or figure out which one you want before you get in line. That way the store clerk doesn't have to spend 5minutes hunting your packs down. And store clerks. Quit tellin them about the 2 for1 specials after you got them their pack. Becuase they ALWAYS change their mind and go with it and waste more of my time. Tell them up front.

And Lottery Players. Do you realise what odds you are up against? You are playing against the Government. If they were a Private Casino that ran odds like that the Government would have that place locked down and every dealer, waiter, and employee of that Casino in handcuffs on their way to jail.

Sorry for the little rant. I ran into that today at a gas station with an outdoor pay window and I was very cold and had to pee.

But with the Taxes put on Cigarettes. For a little more you can smoke Crack and give a big FU to the government. Since Crack isn't taxed.

YES!...stop supporting those who hurt you.

Did you know that ordering smokes from out of state to avoid taxes is against the law? They are deadly serious about wanting YOUR money.

And did you know that smoking cigarettes hurts your health?

Stop supporting that which hurts us,

Jeff Livingston

Well

I know my answer is going to be popular .... LOL I am a smoker, I enjoy it, and I don't want to quit.

Go to a Smoke Shop: Tell them you want 'Smoker's Choice' little cigars (same size as cigarettes, regular or 100's, regular or menthol) and have them get them for you. They smoke the same, and don't have the state tax on them. I get a carton for $9.85 for 100 Menthols.

What are you complaining about $5 is a bargain....here it cost $10. Every so months the government raises it hoping it would be a smoke free province someday. I'm a smoker and it's hurting my pocket. Just cut down. Sounds like you enjoy smoking and you know what that's our right and personal choice. But if you do choose to cut down you might be able to quit which in the long run will save you thousands of $$$$ and your life....which means more money to buy cues or whatever ;)

BEST reason so far... at least as far as financial reasons :D

Sorry, I just can't do it. I'm addicted to the Texas lottery. Maybe if I go into rehab...

I quit on Jan 2nd.

Started again on the 5th. I've changed to a cheaper brand & I'm probably smoking about a quarter as many cigarettes. My problem is I just really don't want to quit.:(

Real Cost

According to smartmoney.com and CBS news they did a study on secondary costs of cigarrettes in terms of health care, lower paying jobs, damage to homes and automobiles. They state the current price per pack is an average of $40 PER PACK. Everything from lost time off work to lower resale value for your home and car. That alone is reason enough to quit. $40 per pack. Put all the empty packs in a basket at your house and start counting the money you spend.
