Australian Company Launches World Class Online Billiards Web Site
An Australian online billiard sports site, PoolComps.com, with potential to be the world’s biggest, will begin operating global billiards tournaments Friday, October 27. The first weekly tournament carries prize-money of US$10,000 and is open to registered players who pay only US$7.50 a month. Many other services, including coaching advice, are available free of charge from PoolComps.com, which is already operational.

The new site is a brainchild of the sport’s main controlling bodies, the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) and the World Confederation of Billiard Sports (WCBS). It has been four years in development and provides enthusiasts with a new level of technical excellence in online play.
 
I've been a member for a while (not premium though), thanks to inzombiac, and noticed it's either an extremely slow nap cloth or they need some work on the physics. They have throw and deflection somewhat, which is pretty cool, but the balls roll like molasses. It's still great for figuring out position plays and kicking, definitely suggest joining at LEAST as the free account type. play anyone anywhere anytime :p
 
It's actually the brain child of Steve Worth, an Australian who has run several successfull clubs in Australia as I understand.

They have sought cooperation with the WPA, who provides them credibilty and some marketing assistance.

I wish Steve and poolcomps.com the greatest success. They've been working on this for years and are on the verge of realizing it's potential.

i love that site. I don't have the upgraded membership but its perfect for when I'm feining for pool at work. That tourney sounds juicy though... i might have to upgrade and give it a shot.

That site is sick and perverted, it shouldn't be allowed on the net. The eight ball table has some flaws but I am really amazed at the way it is able to handle some shots that I didn't think it would.

The problem is that blankety blank blank blank snooker table! It isn't quite as tough as a real one but it is close. English and angle have to be figured very closely to get into those holes. I'm losing sleep to the "one more game" syndrome, it is almost as bad as a real pool hall. ;)

I may have to buy the premium membership just because the site is too much fun for it to go away.

My two old work collegues helped build much of this website. Colin is correct about the main guy behind it, they also sponsor the Euro Tour now.

They've thrown a LOT of cash at it over the last few years and its supposed to be extreemly successful at present.

I would venture to say you will almost ceertainly get paid.

POOLCOMPS TOURNAMENT FORMAT


We at PoolComps have developed a unique tournament format to cater for an infinite number of players (unlimited number).
We have built it in such a way that on all days with the exception of the final day you can play your matches when ever it suits you. You can play your matches all in one sitting or you can play one match, come back two or three hours later, play another match then come back four or five hours later to complete your final match on that day. In other words just play your matches when ever it suits you, but make sure you finish in the given 20 hour period of that day.

Here is the reason we can do this.

There is no fixed tournament draw to start with. A program has been built to match players from all over the world at the press of the “play now” button – Meaning there could be 100’s of players looking to play their matches at any given time and when they press the “play now” button our program will automatically find an opponent who is also looking to play a match.

When you enter the tournament room and press the “play now” button to play one of your matches, a clock will start to count down for 10 minutes. If an opponent does not join your table inside the 10 minute countdown you automatically win that match.

You will have 20 hours per day to play and finish your matches.

But you must complete you matches inside the time frame set for that day or you are out of the tournament.

The only time you know before hand as to who your next opponent will be is on the final day when a fixed draw will be posted.

On that day the tournament will be run the same as any other fixed draw tournament.

All tournaments will be run for three or four days.

Our first tournament will run over three days.

You will play one or two matches on day 1 – We will decide on day 2 whether to have one, two or three matches to get our numbers right for the final day. It all depends on membership numbers.






THIRD AND FINAL DAY – FIXED DRAW

. There will be a fixed time for each round.
. There will be a 5 to 10 minute break after every round.
. If you win your first round on the final day you are in the prize money.
. The final days play will be completed in 10 hours.

The Official World Online 8 & 9ball Titles at the
end of November will be held using this format.

PoolComps.com is supported by a unique, patented tournament system, also developed in Australia, that will allow a wide range of continuous, global competitions, as well as major events such as world championships for online players. Players choose their own times to compete in the initial rounds and schedules are introduced only in the deciding stages.

PoolComps.com is scheduled to conduct its inaugural World 8-Ball and World 9-Ball Online Pool Championships before the end of this year, with entry at no extra cost to subscribers. These will become world-class annual events and the 2006 prize pool will total US$100,000.

All activity on the site will provide a direct cash benefit to the WPA and WCBS, which will be shared among their constituent organisations to promote the sport. Every affiliated country will therefore be a partner in this venture. This will mean that, for the first time, cue sports will be assured of substantial, continuing funding. Partners in the project see this as an important element in the quest for long-awaited Olympic status for pool, the world’s most-played sport.

The PoolComps.com site explains the mechanics of pool to newcomers and provides professional coaching for all levels of skill, irrespective of location. Some of the world’s leading professional players are engaged in the coaching processes.

The site shows players how to execute standard and trick shots, plan game strategies and understand factors such as angles and spin. Players are able to see the correct degree of force and the point of impact required to execute each shot correctly, and to replay it in slow motion. All the experience gained on PoolComps.com is directly applicable to table-top play.

PoolComps.com has already made extensive commitments to the development and public awareness of the sport.

The company was naming rights sponsor of the 2006 World 8-Ball Pool Federation championships held at Blackpool, UK, June 5-15, the PoolComps.com Austria Open (7-11 June) the PoolComps.com Netherlands Open (20-23 September) and the PoolComps.com Swiss Open (4-7 October). In Spain, the PoolComps.com Costa del Sol Open will be held in Malaga, 6-10 December. All these events are on the European Pocket Billiard Federation tour.
