Automatic extension

Even though I was there, maybe my memory is failing me here, but I thought the problem was that Shane didn't hear the referee's "ten-seconds left to shoot" warning, and the dispute concerned whether the warning had been given at all.

I just checked my notes from the match, and then watched the video (it's on YouTube). "I said 'extension'" was Shane's initial response after John Leyman called a foul. Then they (Leyman and others) reviewed the recording, at which time Shane indicated that he called for an extension when he turned to go around the table with 16 seconds left. Commentating, Jeremy Jones reported what Shane had said.

maybe all shots should be made within the time period. and no extentions. get up and shoot.

Thanks, it's a bit of a blur but there sure was a lot of confusion and several accounts among those present of what had happened.

I don't think it is a likely scenario, but imagine a shot where you are almost sure to foul, but disturbing any balls would result in a much easier out for your opponent. You aren't likely doing yourself much off a favor, but you might have a slightly better opportunity. Sometimes it comes to grasping at straws.

Yes, but if the position is as problematic as you say, opponent might take a foul with ball in hand and you'll face the same problem, but now you'll be on one foul, so you might trade down. I guess such a position as you suggest is possible, but I haven't ever seen such a position.

If the shooter can take a foul without moving the cue ball -- a masse touch, for example -- that's always a better option. Time outs are valuable.
