Az/onepocket.org room at DCC

It may be a little early, but the Derby is creeping up on us.

Seems like last year the tables were not used a lot by Az/Onepocket.org members. I stuck my head in there quite a bit and did not see much going on. Mostly strangers banging balls.

We are getting quite a bit of interest on the partners game on the Geezers thread over on onepocket.org and some who do not qualify as geezers who are also interested in playing partners matches.

How about we reserve one or both tables for a night or more to play some partners matches. Can be low to high stakes depending on the players involved and would be a lot of fun.

Probably not a bad idea to put some more organized competitions in there and make better use of the room. Does anyone know: are there plans to use that room again for the 1Pocket Challenge?

Will you be there with S.S. checks in hand? ;)

I enjoy sweating the challenge but is does tie the room up some. You are right though, we do need to utilize it more.

This room is upstairs correct? If that is so then I heard quite a few people say they were going to check it out but you have to pay to go up there. This subject has been brought up before and it is something that the DCC crew needs to figure out. There will always be those who say the Horseshoe is a better venue and there will be those who say the Executive was better. Moving the tournament was probably out of their control but the Executive was obviouslly more poolplayer friendly and kept more money in everyones pockets. If the DCC is going to be setup just like it has been for the last few years then they need to move their gate person down on the other side of the refreshment stand, where the tournament play is.

Sorry to get off subject but that might have had a little bit to do with the turnout in there. I think the partners game is a neat idea and would enjoy watching you old school guys play.

This subject has been brought up before and it is something that the DCC crew needs to figure out. They have their people setting at the top of the escalator checking badges or braclets when ever you go up there. They expect you to pay to get into the action room which is ridiculous and the same goes for the AZB room, if it was the one that had two tables in it that is. There will always be those who say the Horseshoe is a better venue and there will be those who say the Executive was better. Its pretty bad when you pay $1000 for a room down there then everytime you turn around someone has their handout for more $$.

I was just in Louisville and the Executive West is no more. I think it's a Westin now and completely redone -- I imagine there is no going back. Also, the Louisville Airport is now a UPS hub -- trying to sleep in a hotel down there now is like trying to sleep on the deck of an aircraft carrier, with dozens of flights blasting off in the middle of the night.

As to upstairs access, you do need a Player or Spectator pass to get up there. I wouldn't think that would be too big a deal, supporting the event and all that.

Not good!

Dont mind supporting the event and I will be at the up-coming one, but i too wish they would put a little more thought into the setup...., sure miss the old place!

This is a good point but its not like Diamond, Gregg Sullivan or anyone else is losing money on the deal. Almost everything these days is done soley because there is profit to be made, which is understandable but somewhere you have to draw the line. This is small potatos compared to some things but if a guy goes to the DCC strictly to gamble, which is what a lot of people do, then paying each day to get into the action room is simply of a joke.....kind of like going to work and paying to get in the front door. Taking the length of the event into consideration, not having to pay to get into the action room or AZB room everyday would mean someone could get another nights stay or several meals there, which arent cheap and the selection is few. Casinos dont make their money off food and rooms so they are definetly not falling into the red, yet everything is still a premium charge. I would venture to say that the DCC accounts for a huge profit for the Horseshoe while its going on. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Pool players are going to be drawn to the casino like moths to a light and what other event are people going to stay for 9 days? Its in basically the middle of no where so they pretty much have a monopoly on the food, drinks and anything else they offer.

There are probably a lot of ideas, comments or concerns that people may have as to how things could be made better at the DCC. Not to take away from this threads topic it might not hurt to start a DCC thread and let Gregg listen to what the fans and attendees have to say on certain topics. Its still far enough away that any ideas, good or bad could be taken into consideration.

Here is an example of how strong the admission to upstairs is, I saw a couple there who went up stairs to use the business center (computer room) and the gate person asked for their badge or braclet. They said they didnt have anything like that and the guy said "theres an event going on and you have to have one". They were no more interested in pool than a pool player is to a nine to five job but they turned around and went and got a one day braclet. Maybe they didnt know any better or maybe they were just being polite, which ever the case may be it was a bit foolish.

I understand guys do go strictly for the action side. But all those tables, lights, and balls in the Action Room aren't part of the regular casino setup down there. I think Greg should be paid, daily, for giving gamblers the opportunity to do what they do at the DCC. Even the casino takes a rake on each poker pot.

Last I checked the "action" tables got a rate of 10 dollars per hour or 1 dollar per game on the bar table. However, with their being spectator seating upstairs and some tables actually set up for tournament play it is hard to police and distinguish the gamblers between the spectators. I would suggest they have a one time fee for action seekers and distinguish them with a different colored bracelet or badge. I do not think I've ever watched 1 tournament match in its entirety at the DCC. I sleep til 4 or 5 pm. I always buy a onepocket.org pass in order to support the room and enjoy the late night (early morning) practice up there.

This year I will look for older folks running around with S.S. checks in hand and maybe I can get a tip or two playing one hole for 200 or 300 a game at the right handicap.

Comes down to one thing....half the tournament tables are upstairs. So they either do what they do now or let half of their show go for free. Personally I find it pretty damn funny that people who specifically go to a place to bet thousands of dollars complain about paying a $10-$15 admission charge.

This selfish attitude from a certain segment of players/spectators is what has soured me on the Derby. I have seen it go from bad to worse over the years and its gotten to the point I don't even enjoy the event anymore.

I dont understand this. Are you talking about the tournament setup or the actual casino, which has nothing to do with the DCC at all?

lol, watch out for some of them old guys running around with the SS checks. Some of them are downright ornery when it comes to doubling their dough.

I was talking about the action room. They get hauled in to give gamblers the chance to do what they want to do. I know the table rates are $10 an hour, but even tournament players have to pay that if they want to match up or practice after hours, so I don't see the big deal about paying for a daily pass.

I enjoy seeing my friends and meeting customers who have bought our stuff or watched matches. I guess running an area for the last few years has taken its toll on me. Its worse than child care. Mix that in with all the treachery going on and who wants to fade all that ? Derby used to be my favorite event of the year but a lot of things have changed, myself probably being one of the major ones.
