Unless you live under a rock, you should know by now that Japan was hit first by an 8.9 quake and followed with a 6.6 quake just a few minutes ago. The city of Sendai was hit with a tsunami wave that measured at 20 feet, followed by one that measured 30 feet.

Reports are an 11 foot wave has hit Hawaii. Smaller waves have reached the West Coast, with Crescent City, CA reporting damage. Also, there are reports that a volcano in Indonesia has begun erupting and evacuations have begun.

It should be noted that next Friday, March 19 the Earth will experience a 'supermoon'. The moon will be at it's closest to Earth in the last 18 years and should look huge in the sky. Scientists have speculated as to whether the added gravitational pull could cause increased earthquake and volcanic activity.

We have many members here that reside in Japan. I hope that you keep them in your prayers. I also hope that they check in when they can.

I lived in Myrtle Beach when Hurricane Hugo hit and worked for a construction equipment supply company,while delivering equipment and supplies to people I saw massive devastation that photo's can't convey.We worked 7days a week for 6 months,16hrs a day.The people in Japan will face years of devastation and reconstruction,loss of lives,pets and property,Yes they must be kept in out prayers.

I have a good friend from Japan. I actually met him when he hired me to do some work for him. Our friendship grew over the years. We'd meet at Starbucks and spend hour after hour just chatting. I really became quite fond of him. He moved back to Japan last year, and when I read this news, I was really scared.

Thankfully, I just received this e-mail from him this morning after I e-mailed him asking if he was safe:

Thank you. I am now actually visiting University of Hawaii for some academic meetings. We did expected some tsunami here in Honolulu too, but it did not happen fortunately. I had a hard time to reach at my parents from here. The lines from the US to Japan were too busy. The phone lines and emails were almost dead even in Tokyo.

When my call reached my dad finally, he said he tried to email me, but all email and mobile phone communications were dead there. They were at home. My hometown did not get the tsunami. So, it was OK. My parents and I are safe. Thanks for caring. I am so shocked. People in Japan appreciate the President's kind condolences and American help. Many of my American friends emailed me like you. I appreciate the alliance and friendship so much.

I still could not figure out if some of my friends are OK, but I hope they are OK.

Anyway, it is so nice to hear from you. Thank you so much.

I cannot imagine what it must be like for families in Japan worrying about their loved ones and friends. I was so happy to receive this e-mail from my good friend Masa. :)
