Disappointments

#1 - Nametag usage. I REALLY wish I had made better, more legible nametags. Here is the dynamic I could have changed: WBM enters room, meets 7 new people, can't remember their names 5 minutes later (hey, I was a child of the 60's, those brain cells are history), comes back to the room later, sees several of these people, is too embarrassed to ask their names again (they're NOT wearing the nametag) so leaves the room to avoid having to ask again.

Hey, am I right??? Didn't this happen to you?? If we weren't all a little shy, and a little hesitant to get out and socialize, then WTF would we be doing spending all this time on the internet. Let's just accept it.

I had to reintroduce myself on several occasions, and it WAS awkward; but you know what; I have quite a few new pool-playing fanatic friends as a result (great if I ever need a pool game at DCC or want to start a cult or something...errr....wait, AZB is kind of a cult already...nevermind). I'm glad I made the effort, but I wish it was a little easier - nametags are the answer.

#2 - Refreshment shortage. Man, do we ever need free soda's and snacks in that room. I am already looking for creative ways to circumvent the restrictions; I truly think we could make it happen next year. I'll bet we could really increase professional visitation with 2 tables and free drinks.

#3 - Raffle fiasco. We had to change the raffle idea about 6 times in the last half hour before it was played. See the "Celebrity Tournament" thread for details - sorry Mick, sorry jazznpool, sorry RSB-Refugee.
 
YES!! Nametags and lack of usage was a snag. Going into the room no one having a name tag on was a bit awkward. It is much better when people are wearing the tags. Great idea to have them in the first place and thanks for making them up WBM however I do agree there is room for improvement

Your other point however gives me pause. A cult with free beverages?

… no Koolaid for me please.

I kept my Derby name tag attatched to my AZB name tag. The only time I didn't have it on me was for the short period of time that I lost it. I was still wearing them when we went to dinner one night and they fell off in the car. Luckily my friends found them in the car a couple of hours later. Thank you to those of you that wore yours. It made it much easier to find people outside of the room. I met Hondo on the elevator because I spotted his name tag and TennesseJoe stopped by the inside pool booth wearing his so I was able to meet him. If we do this again, we definitely need the name tags.... you people out there need to wear them!! :)

I told people that I would not sell more than 30 tickets. I ended up selling 31 because I needed an extra $20 to make the split easier (so I didn't have to run out and get change amidst all the chaos - and it didn't hurt that I would then have 1 more ticket than breakup - better he slash his wrists than me miss a chance to play with Efren or Jeanette).

I also was just trying to sweeten the pot for Efren (at Jeanette's fervent request) - we originally had sold only 22 tickets, then 9 more when Efren agreed/submitted to play. Remember we originally were going to split the pot 60/40 between winning team and losing team. JL said, "you can't let me ask Efren to do that, when we're dragging him out of bed the night before a big match." Though I did explain this to all present (and all agreed), it still was a bit chaotic.

When I went for jury duty they stuck paper sticky name tags on us. They've got to be cheap,about ten per sheet. You just have to have a room rule no tag no entry. Put them near the door with a pen or have someone watching the room write the names. You'd just need to figure an increase over this years attendance and get enough for each person to have several per day.

For those of us that use our real names on here, I guess that wouldn't be too bad. However, while some of our fellow AZ'ers are quite creative in their monikers.... going through life with some of these names tattoed on one's body, is not something that I would want to do. :eek:

What I did.

Every time I left my room, I simply hooked my Az name Tag onto my Derby Tourney tag. I wore both at all times with no problems.

That extra ticket lowered everyone's chance of winning from 6.66% to 6.45%. I hope you can sleep at night. ;) You gave everyone a chance to back out, if they wanted to. Like I said, no apology necessary, as far as I am concerned.

Regarding Name Tags

I know this may sound a little too strict, but one suggestion I can make comes from my experiences of attending countless magic conventions over the last 12 years.

Everyone who enters the room must wear their name badge. If it is their first time in the room, then they are asked if they are a member of either the AZ or One Pocket boards. If they are, then their badge is sorted out. If not, they are politely asked to leave as it is a private room paid for by members of these forums only. If someone forgets their badge, then they've got to go back to their room and pick it up before they can get access to the room.

This does 2 things:-
  1. Makes sure that only members of the AZ and One Pocket boards are in the room
  2. Everyone is able to remember everyone else's names A LOT easier! No guesswork required!

I look forward to experiencing all the stuff that you guys have been talking about on here when I (hopefully!) make it over to the DCC next January (I hope!).

I can only speak for myself but I thought that the room was great. It would be nice if we had enough contributions for 2 tables next time but I have no complaints. You and a few others did a fantastic job in organizing the whole event which was, I am sure, quite hectic.
Thanks very much for taking this on. I only got a chance to see the room the first couple of days because I had to work on Monday but it was cool meeting yourself, JoeyA, Ratchet, GoingPro.., Sarah Rousey, Alice Rim, SodaPop??, CrossSideLarry etc... Hope to stay longer next year but the room was a huge success. Each year it will get better and better just like the DCC does.

Thanks to all that made the room a complete success in my opinion.

the az billiards Room was a great idea and a big success>

I too didn't remember everyone's screen names and traditional names and wished that it was MANDATORY for everyone to wear their AZ ID Badge even though I did not always wear mine. Having it stuffed into my pocket I'm sure didn't help many people identify who I was. Some people and even myself to a certain extent enjoy a little anonymity.

The drinks would be a great idea. Maybe that would get some of those table hogs off of the table and running to the bathroom more often. :-)

Two tables would be lots better.

But without the room monitors like Ratchet and goinproin07 we would be up the creek without a paddle. For the most part AZ Billiarders handled themselves with lots of class except for when that $35 pizza showed up. I was picking up pieces of debris off of the floor all night long even if most of it was mine. Great idea Ratchet but we need some bibs. If Smorgassbored comes next year we will not need to worry about leftovers.

The visits from the pros was fine but I would like to hear what THEY thought about the room, in all of their sincerity. What's in it for them? What do they want from it if anything?

BTW, what happened to the signed banner?

Next year can you pass the collection plate to chip in using paypal? I know that I contacted Williebetmore late, just before I was suppose to leave town for a trip west. On my way back east I rescheduled and squeezed a 40 hr stopover at the DCC but I was unable to get the check cut and mailed before I left. Paypal would have made it much easier.
