Back from Peoria

After 4 days attending the WPBA tournament in Peoria, it's back to reality (this day job is still getting in the way of my pool addiction).

There was some great pool played this year (like every year). Xiao-Ting Pan definitely served notice that she may become a force. Her match with Helena was just AWESOME. Helena played perfectly until the end, but couldn't shake a determined and composed Pan.

Sarah Rousey had a good tournament; a tremendous comeback win (despite the alternate break format), a dismantling of Tiffany Nelson to get to the single-elimination round of 16 (nothing like a new format every year), and a very respectable showing against Allison in that round (tough draw for Sarah).
Sarah's father introduced himself, and I had the opportunity to meet that very pleasant gentleman, and to compliment him on an obviously superior parenting job.

The Saturday night round-of-8 matches had 2 of the best matches ever. Pan/Fisher and Lee/Corr. Pan started out about 5-1 ahead (never missing a ball), Allison then played perfectly and won about 4 in a row. Pan was not bothered at all, ran an extremely difficult rack, and succeeded in closing out the match. All of the AZB'ers present predicted DCP would take credit for the loss.

The Lee/Corr match was tremendous (at least up until 7-6 Corr). Jeanette had no close matches up til this point, just dominating whoever she drew. In this match she played great, consistently beating Karen to the shot, winning almost every safety and kicking battle (difficult to do against the player most consider the best defensive player on tour). Karen was fortunate to get some easy racks (2-9 combo, 2-9 carom, and a couple of 3-ball runs for victories).

At 7-6 Corr, Karen had to kick at a one ball near a corner pocket, close to the long rail. She went 2 rails into the 1, but neither the 1-ball nor the cue ball touched a rail afterwards. It was quite clearly a foul. When JL went to the table, she reached towards the cue ball and asked if it was a good hit. Karen said yes, it was a good hit (I'm a totally biased JL fan, but man, it was impossible given the direction and final resting place of the balls). I guess JL was not watching very closely or would have argued (I sure would have). Anyway, JL had no shot, Karen wins the rack to go on the hill. JL won 2 more racks to make it hill-hill, but Karen broke and ran the last rack to win. I don't know if Karen really thought she made a legal kick, but if I ever saw something like that in a league game, I would think a lot less of that player afterwards. Anyone else see this??? One less Karen Corr fan here (maybe I shouldn't mention her extreme slow play and rack arguing after falling behind Kim Shaw 8-6) - this brings the number of WPBA players that I will actively root against up to one.

Had a great meal with WallyinCincy (and his parole officer). I missed the usual attendee's ChefJeff, DCP, vagabond, and zeeder - I hope they make it next year. I enjoyed meeting rukiddingme (good player) and longhair. Had some great discussions with Nostroke, DaBabe, sjm (as well as another 14.1 thrashing from him in Peoria), and Allie. I even got to sweat a match with Jeff Beckley (sandianakid), fresh in from an IPT appearance in Vegas.

All in all a great experience - I can't wait for next year.

sounds like you had a good time there Willie. and yes, i've already posted in Wally's thread that i share the blame for Allison coming up short. need to dispatch an apologetic email to her in the very near future.

just curious, was Steve Tipton on top of his game this year, like the other years?

DCP

p.s. yep, i will definitely be in attendance for next year.

I surely wish I was able to attend this year but the fates would not have it. I very much hope to be in attendence next year though!

Wait, wait, wait...

Someone from a snooker background showing poor sportsmanship? IMPOSSIBLE! *wry smile*

Pretty disappointing that the referee didn't catch it.

Salt-man,
They "referee" themselves. Steve Tipton is asked over only if they want a neutral observer to watch for a bad hit before a controversial kick. In this case the one was sitting by itself, and no one anticipated any difficulty judging the outcome - probably JL should have been watching more closely. It was pretty clear what happened, the question being did Karen really believe she somehow hit a rail (hard to imagine thinking that though).

You defiantly got to spend time with good people. Ruk, Jeff Beckley, SJM, Allie some of my favorite people! Wish I could have made it down, maybe next year!

Willie,

Was this a TV match?

The reason I ask is b/c I've seen Tipton walk up to the table, grab the ball and hand it to the incoming player after a foul, even when he had not been hovering to observe a hit.

No one's perfect though.

Bandit,
Not a TV match. You are correct that Steve DOES referee the television matches. The preliminary matches are refereed by the players themselves with the exception as noted above.

Had a great time in Peoria...

Sweated a ton of matches but the HIGHLIGHT of my trip was the little excursion to a pool hall with Willibetmore, SJM ,Wally from Cincy and his wife. It is always nice to meet people from the boards and these people were just awesome.
I think we all looked forward to hitting some balls after sweating 1 1/2 days of matches. I got my butt kicked but I really had a good time.
For those who have never watched a WPBA event live you really are missing something. The players are very personable and friendly AND not to mention the fact that there is some really good pool played.
I look forward to seeing you all again at either Michigan City or Peoria next year. I plan on attending both.
ruk

Williebetmore, I'm sorry we didn't get a chance to play our promised straight pool match. This year I was finally busy playing matches. I owe you. Next time I see you, we will have our battle.

It was good to see everyone again and I look forward to seeing everyone again soon. Thanks for all the support over the past week.

Absolutely and I have to believe Karen knew it. If she did not she was the only person in the joint that missed it.

You have to admit though, she was on her game. I mean she started complaining about the rack IN THE VERY FIRST GAME instead of waiting until her opponent was ahead.

As soon as she started that garbage Jeanette called Steve Tipton over and basically said "I ain't rackin' 'em, you rack 'em" and went and sat down in her chair. I loved it.

Karen really misses the Sardo. She is very good at making a ball if the rack is the way she wants it.

Wally,
There is NO question that Karen's break was magnificent in that match (the best I saw all week - tremendous spreads, ball made, whitey parked in the center). All of the racking time just made my rear end sore (?sorer?).

I guess playing with the men is paying off for Karen???;) She's getting to be one tough cookie, it seems. SJM, what really happened to Jeanette on that leave?...AZers want to know!

I will be there next year, come hell or high water....well maybe not high water---that ol' Miss is hard to cross sometimes.

Thanks for the updates, groovy guys, groovy gals...

I had a really great time being able to talk to williebetmore and sjm, (so nice to see you both!) and meeting wally in cincy and his wife. I just hope I'll be able to see you all again soon at another WPBA event!

14.1 runs please Willie?

TheSingle,
35 yesterday.

I will say though, that if I can find a table like the one we played on in Peoria (BUCKETS for pockets) that I think I can definitely run 50 (maybe even 75) if I could play on it for a couple of days.

If I haven't run the 75 by the end of the year, I might have to drive to Peoria just to use their table (it's only a 4 hour drive, well worth the expense to win a beer from you).

Congrats Willie on your 35, you are however too modest not to mention your consecutive racks racked record. Please allow me.

I have it on good authority that Willie’s record of consecutive racks racked is in the hundreds. (failing to get to a break ball and thus racking the next rack.)

His racking run can go for days or weeks, stuff of legend. I understand when he gets in a zone he is incapable of picking a pattern to get to a break ball or even a key ball. Just one of the significant Betmore stats that are often overlooked.

breakdown,
You have no proof of this whatsoever (so I'll continue to deny it). If you try to imply that the streak ended by just quitting instead of actually getting on a break ball - I will deny that too. While I'm at it, I'm going to deny that there was a Holocaust (Mel G. told me this on good authority), and I'm going to deny that the world is round (who could play pool on a surface that is spinning at a thousand miles an hour? LUDICROUS JUST LIKE YOU). Hey, I like this denial stuff (it worked for Slick Willie, maybe I can get elected this way).
