Back when I was young

This was on a wall in a friends game room.

Back when I was young I could really play
I,ll tell you kid I could cut the paint off them balls
No fancy cue I played off the wall
I shot so straight I would run out from anywhere
Jacked up or on the end rail I didn't care
When I walked in, the hustlers had nothing to say
Back when I was young I could really play
I could play for days on end without any rest
Everyone knew I was the best of the best
I would fire em in and bank em like rockets
Hell I was barred more than once for wearing out the pockets
I had cars, money and more gals than five men could lay
Back when I was young I could really play
I went years and never missed a ball
My picture was was hung on every pool room wall
When I walked in you could here a mouse cough
I'd give all the seven and shoot their nuts off
Then I would look up with a big ole grin
And yell rack em up house man I busted them suckers again
Nobody beat me back in the day, cause
Back when I was young I could really play
Now I'm old and half blind, can't even tell a solid from a stripe
I just sit and watch and puff on my old pipe
But if I close my eyes I can see the action and smell the smoke in them old
halls
I'm young once again never missing a ball
So keep on playing kid cause you have a gift from above
The nine to fivers do what they hate, you're doing what you love
You'll have a million stories for your grand kids one day, and you'll tell em
Back when I was young I could really play

I remember when you were young, and you could play.
i never could, but being around you guys provided me
with some pretty fond memories as well.

jack used to play,
I remember a time he ran me in as a ringer to play on his championship softball
team, everything was ok till some guy knocked a home run in right field and I never saw the ball

Then Jack lost face because his ringer couldn't play
Then he ran me in as a ringer in a golf game,I got the guy to give me 100 to one on some 50 foot putt
that broke 15 feet down hill,i bet our bankroll and missed the putt by 20 feet.Poor Jack looked like a sick puppy.I explained it was 100 to one and we only lost a few hundred ,but we were gonna win nearly

50 GRAND

I thought Jack was gonna cry,but he gutted it out and only said, next time let him manage the money.

We were only 15 years old when the fun started,Jack was maybe 13,but he could play

only problem was his form and style shouted PLAYER,he looked like
the best player and scared people off

Remember when i lost our bankroll playing Pete Glenn. After the game Jack said
"I am the player you are the stake horse, not vice versa!

Lots of wisdom from ole Jack at times.

As good as he played I should have been satisfied betting on him,
but I kept wanting to play

Good times

Dean had a knack for getting action going. Sometimes the games were good
but sometimes, well lets just say I didn't think we were stealing like Dean said
we were. Once at Clicks, Dean says Danny Mathews is here, get him down.
Danny was a old bookie and player from the Cotton Bowling Palace and back
then was a pretty good player. Dean tells me he's helpless give him the 5 out
and the break. Well, I hadn't him seen in a long time but he wasn't in a coma,
I said I may never shoot, he could make one of his game balls on the break
50 games in a row. Nah it's the nuts Dean says. Well we kick it off for $500
a set, and everybody in the place starts betting Danny on the side. (even
Jack Cooney). So that make me feel a little better about it. Just like I figured
never got a chance that set. On the break, luck one of them in,ect. I look at
Dean and he says (now we got him, double the bet). Well that's just what
we did and I took him on off. Dean was not the best player around but
no matter now much the bet is or who he's playing, If he's supposed to win
he WINS. Can't ask any more than that.

Thanks to Jack and Dean for some Texas lore......I rarely got further north than Austin or Houston during my forays on the road....and by the time I did.....I made one of my biggest scores in Ft. Worth....and of course U.J. was in on the deal.

Watch out for Dean................

Nice story. A poignant look at a life that is true for many of us.
We can all look back at the highs, the lows, the triumphs, and the defeats, and wonder if it was worth the effort. Whenever I wax nostalgic one particular song comes to mind, and I would like to share it with you now. :o

Yep, a great version.
I never was in the crotch. Spent my time dodging the Shore Patrol in Panama City, Panama.
I got to see the Vietnam Memorial, back in the eighties. By the time I got to the end of it I was crying like a baby. Where have all the flowers gone?
