Backers are a dime a dozen, the wannabes

LOL. But when some nobody starts mouthing off and getting wise, and is dropping player X's name at every turn, it's just pathetic.
I mean, come on, it is entertaining to observe. Sad, but still entertaining.

Mr. Sunshine strikes again!

So a guy throws in his money into pool, a pool player uses, abuses and dumps him "in the gutter" and you ridicule the guy who put his money up?!?

I just don't understand why people don't want to invest in this game!:o

How many people out there know of a pool player, who basically sucks at pool, who wants the glory and acclaim, but never get it on their own who then decide to back a local players in an attempt to attain higher status?

I'm not talking about backers who have sound business principles who make good business decisions who are in it for the money.

No.

I'm talking about the nobodys who wants to be a somebody, who go about it by becoming a backer.

Someone who the players prey on as it is their free meal ticket, who end up in the gutter because they wanted a little taste of the glory that can come with being a better player, but got crapped on relentlessly in the process.

Are they really that desperate? Does it really mean that much to them?

I mean, i have seen it a million times in pool. Crappy player blows sunshine up good players a.ss and becomes good players backer and personal slave.
Good player KNOWS he has a slave, and abuses the crap out of them, all the while, getting free entry fees and food and travel.

I just can't understand why someone would want to prostitute themselves like this simply to be recognized as better by association, cause we ALL know they don't make a profit in the long run.

They suck at pool, but by hanging with such and such, they feel that they are instantly transformed into a higher class of pool citizen.

I think in my pool career, i have seen about 20 or so of these types of relationships, usually with the same high end players. Who DO play excellent, but see having a slave as an opportunity to go play everyone, even if the game is out of line, without regard for backer cause if they lose their slave, they can always go to the corner pool hall and enlist another one.

It's the players free ride.

The backer still doesn't get the status they want cause if the reasons are really obvious, they get made fun of behind their back by everyone who has seen their kind come and go.

Every single one of these relationships i have seen, has ended.
The player got a free ride, and the backer, goes back to the sidelines, talking about all the bad games the player made, or the stupid shots the player took when playing for the cheese or some glory story, etc etc.

Am i the only one who has seen this?

How many people out there, know of a person who sucks at pool, who then becomes a players backer and slave?

Yes i do ridicule the guy, because regardless of the status he wants, when he thinks he has achieved it, everyone is laughing at him cause he is going around with this bravado that has no basis in reality. He still stinks.

Any backer who wants to be willingly used by another player, is an idiot IMO.

If you think they are deserving, then you go right ahead and feel sorry for them cause i won't.

What I think is funny is people making fun of people who are trying to fill a void. How sad is your life you have to ridicule someone for not being a 100% complete person, who out there doesn't have a problem in their life?
What kind of void do you have to make fun of someone else? Why not be happy for them & hope it works out the best for them?
Wish you were a wannabe backer? Best of luck to you, may you find happiness in your ridicule of others.

Next time he does this think to yourself does this hurt me in anyway, the answer will be no, then just smile & watch the show. Let the guy have fun the only way he can it doesn't hurt anyone.

I do smile and laugh.

Just like i do when some newbie comes in and starts hanging in the pool room telling stories about how his dad used to be a hustler and play pool with Mosconi and he's got the pool table necklace, and the pool table ring, despite the fact that he stinks.

Or how some dude in a long leather trench coat at the bar trying to be cool likes to talk about how he is on the pro tour and made so much money playing when talking to the girls, but doesn't want to bet a beer or know who Efren Reyes is.

Just like some chick at the bar who is piss drunk, doesn't want to give up the table claiming she plays on the womens tour, yet when i ask who the top players are, she has no idea.

Just like the dude who has that shark with a cue stick tattoo ,that is taking a bite out of an 8 ball, despite the fact that he can't make ball in hand.

Just like the guy who watches me practice, who gives me the "how much do u love pool and have u ever been to Vegas" league recruitment spiel.

Or the newbie naive guy who comes up to me after watching me practice, and asks me...."do you play league?"

I laugh and smile at them in the same way.

We used to call these guys "Pool Imposters" and I loved them! If you handled them right, you could get them into a game and they might even go off trying to look cool. You had to build them up a little and congratulate them on any shot they made, and commiserate with them when they missed.

There were a lot of them around after The Hustler came out. They had their cue in the little case and tried to look and sound like Fast Eddie. Ah, the good ole days! :D

As for backers, if they got the cash to put up, that is the only thing I require. There are no background checks at the poolroom. :grin-square:

BUSTED SLOB LOSER WANNABE

PREMATURE PERMANENT INK ON HIS ARM OR LEG THAT IS JUST AS GOOD AS A BIG L ON HIS FOREHEAD THAT SAYS, LOSER WANNABE. Now he has really put the pressure on to become world class, otherwise, everyone and their mother will laugh at him. Lone exception, people who get pool tattoos because they love the game. But does it really matter, cause we still can't tell the friggin difference.

Just like the guy who watches me practice, who gives me the "how much do u love pool and have u ever been to Vegas" league recruitment spiel. Why would i want to donate money to his league coordinating ass, when 1) I play better then him, and 2) I have already been to Vegas and played with the big boys.

Or the newbie naive guy who comes up to me after watching me practice, and asks me...."do you play league?"Dude, please don't ask me that question again until you are better educated in pool on account that i might spontaneously vomit on you, and cannot be held liable.

I laugh and smile at them in the same way.

Everyone in the world does not fit into the selected criteria for annoying people.
Do you fit into any of these criteria?

Your are SOOOO right on the money with this.

A little pumping up goes a long way. Robbing them is the BEST!
But it doesn't stop the fact that they look like idiots.

They looked like Prime Cut Sirloin to me. But it was tricky getting them down. They were easily scared off. You had to make them think you were in awe of them. I got one guy at Ye billiard Den in Hollywood pretty good. He was wearing alligator shoes, designer bell bottoms and a silk shirt. He had a new Ginacue in a Gina slim case.

He was practicing and banging balls around trying to look cool, like he was stalling or something. He was talking big money and had everyone a little scared. I had a gut feeling he couldn't play any better than what he was showing. I told the guy I wanted to bet on him if that was all right. He loved that line, it massaged his big ego. I then showed him about $500 I had in my pocket. I told him this is all I had to bet. His eyes got real big. This was like 1967.

I told him I was new to the game, but I loved to watch good players. He bit! When he finally couldn't stand it anymore he asked me what game I liked to play. I knew I had him right then. It took him about 30 minutes to talk me into playing 50 a game 9-Ball. I beat him out of 400 before he wised up that he had been hustled. He ran out of there fast, he was so embarrassed. That was a monster score for me back then.

Never saw that guy ever again. I think I retired him and his Ginacue.

I'm sure you're the greatest player ever good for you.

Does this sentence make any sense?
What were you trying to say?

Is it...greatest player ever wouldn't be good for you?

Or, ...you're the greatest player ever, no one else is good for you.

Or, ...you're the greatest, no other player could ever be good enough for you.

Or is is, I'm sure your the greatest player ever. (<-----this is a period, a common punctuation mark) Good for you.

Either way, i am not the greatest, and despite that, the people mentioned are still annoying.

You need to brush up on your keyboard skills. That way when you throw out an insult, it actually sounds like an insult, and not some reject dyslexic type of sentence.

Backing players in general is a losing proposition. Laying someone 2 to 1 on the money is basically what you are doing and most of the time the games are not that out of line. I can count on 2 hands the number of times I've backed someone and I've won every one of those matches because it was complete stealing. I'd much rather bet on the side when the match is a gamble, but I like money.

YOUR RIGHT!

It's just the people I'm referring to, don't care about money in the beginning, just as long as they get the status.
They don't mind losing initially cause next thing you know, they can bust out a "yeah, we lost $2000 last time we played him" high roller story.

Like they don't mind losing a couple of times, just as long as it gives them something to talk about and makes them look like serious gamblers. It's only when they start to look like mac machines with everyone making a withdraw, that they don't feel like smack talking gamblers anymore.

I had a guy who used to ask me to sweat his matches. He thought I was good luck. He always won during this little period of me sweating him, and he would "always" give me about 20% or so of what he won. What a sweat deal......LOL.

I've done a little backing, but with "close" friends who I wanted to put into action, but that is about it. There was one guy wolfing at a friend of mine one day about how he was scared to play, etc. Now, I've backed this friend or went in partners with him a few times, and we're real cool. My friend would beat him, but just doesn't like him at all (because of the other guys antics)....so won't play because of that (and I can't blame him). The woofing went on and I finally got mad, and told the guy loudly in front of everyone he could come back to tomorrow and freeze up $5,000 at least, for some $1000 a game one pocket. If not, shot the f*ck up. That ended his $20 a game one-pocket woofing.

corvette is right...2-1 odds is tough to fade in the long run. I have staked players as well in the past and will likely do it in the future, but going over my history, I would say I am in the red. Come to think of it, when I go over my gambling in the past it sorta looks like this:
dice....big red
cards...red
football...oh shiat crimson red
baseball...about even maybe in the black
basketball...red
backing players...red

thankfully I am in the black on my biggest gambles of real estate and equities.
