Bad Action in NYC

I wasn't asking for action in an earlier post when I said "ask for me" I just happen to work at Amsterdam and can steer people into a game if they don't know anyone. Just want to make that clear to everyone.

And I was just about to dust off my cue!

Tim from Broadway

Gee Whiz. Didn't know I'd get branded as "bad action" for wanting to switch back to the original table - after we were even. Sorry that happened Jim, you are a nice guy and I was just a bit frustrated. But to be honest, I just wanted out of the game because I don't care to play for $20 a game with a solid player. 20 a rack one hole is fun only when you're stealing or donating to a better player. If you really wanted to gamble I would have played you on any table. But, I just don't have the patience to play for $20. I tried because I like the game and don't get to play it much in ny. I certainly wasn't trying to be a locksmith. But, I really don't think what I did was bad action or anything like it. A bit harsh. Bad action is usually a term reserved for guys that don't pay, cheat, shark, etc. While I ain't no saint, I don't do any of these. And just to defeat any other locksmith, nit theories: I will play any non-professional that comes into Broadway some $100 one-pocket/nine-ball. I don't mind tough action and I'm a B player. Sorry we didn't click Jim, but you have a standing offer to play for $500 on any shimmed table in the ny area. But, I think you're more of a social player, which is fine. I didn't even know pool players went on forums and called people out over $20 action.? There has to be more interesting topics....

Sorry to call you out, but I didnt think you were the only Tim in the joint. The reason I play for $20 is so no one really gets hurt. I love the action, but dont like it when people get pissed and from my point of view this was the second time you quit on me leaving me with a bad feeling about you.

I dont hold a grudge, and maybe we can play again. Maybe I'll see you at Skyline.

Here's my Broadway Billiards story.....My girlfriends from New York and we took a trip back there about 2 years ago. Went into B-way Billiards (never been there before) a few times while I was there, as it was close to where we were staying. I don't necessarily 'look' like a 'player' (it's always so very gratifying to be mistaken for a tourist/fish by the predators..:)), so on two occasions I was asked to play One Pocket....I beat both guys pretty easily....when I next stopped by somebody probably made a phone call because in a little while a guy called 'Slim' came in and asked me to play (maybe you New York guys know him?) - he played good, it was a tough game, but I liked the guy and enjoyed playing him.

I came in to Amsterdam Billiards on a Friday evening when Jude was managing the place. I think that I played Slim when I was there.

It was a pretty busy evening as The Tri State Tour was in town that weekend. During the evening Jason Kane pointed out a tall guy, head above the crowd, warning me to avoid getting suckered into a game with him.

Any way, next day I played the TST and went two and out. Idly sitting around, I got into a conversation with a player who was sitting there yawning his head off. I asked him had he played in the tournament. He told me that he had overslept and missed it. I could well believe it.

He said did I want to play and after a bit of negotiation I got three on the wire race to seven 9 ball for $50. I went down 7-5. It was only towards the end that I was playing the guy that Jason had told me to avoid.

So I said I will play you one handed, race to two for another $50. That took about 20 minutes to put together but eventually we played. He won the first rack but I came back and won the next two.

The guy paid up and gave me another $15 split on the table money and went home (to bed?)

When I clocked off Jude had put the table on free time for me. So I came out in front against one of the NYC action kings.

That felt good.
If I ever run into him again, I owe him seven and a half bucks.

Well then Im asking....... Can we play sir??

So, Chris Lynch and Rob(Junior 718) decided to get it on and the neogitations went quit well. They were to play four sets two at ABC and two at Skyline. ABC first on Sunday night and Skyline second on Monday night. The game was even 9ball for 500 a set.

The home player got to choice the table, balls etc. and the other player just had to accept it. To say the playing conditions differ at Skyline and ABC is the understatement of the year. While both places have good and well maintained equipment. ABC is set up for league players. The tables are super fast and the pockets are the size of the ocean. Skyline has several tight tables and they play average speed.

Night one ABC: Two races to Eleven

Equipment: Chris choices the front table right by the counter with the Aramith Pro Cup balls. The table is super bouncey and the pockets are buckets.

Rob takes a few practices racks and we are off to the races. The first set they were both trying to settle in and not playing partically well, to my surprise. I have a lot of respect for both their games but the play was a bit off for these guys. Anyway the first set is tight and finally Rob pulls ahead 10to 8 to get on the hill. From this point, Rob has at least three solid chances to win and fails to do so. He misses an easy 3 at 10 to 8 and Chris gets out. At 10 to 9 he misses a very difficult 6 that he played horrible position on and Chris gets out. At hill/hill Rob is shooting and he has just the 7 8 9 on the table. The 7 is on the same rail as the 8 and the 7 is close to the corner pocket and the 8 is one diamond below the side with the CB almost in the middle of the table. A standard three rails position shot that rob severally under hit, which resulted with a super tough cut on 8. I believe Rob should have accepted his mistake and played safe but his competitive juices got the best of him and he tried to cut the 8 and solid the farm - First set to Chris.

Second set - Rob is on super tilt and I expect Chris to run through Rob, but 9ball is a funny game. Rob gave away the first few racks and all of a sudden he got a couple of very good rolls and got his composure back and raced out to a 8 to 3 lead. Chris seemed unphased and fought back to 9 to 8. BTW - during this comback Chris made a long jack-up shot on the 7 that should have been on ESPN. Chris is running out to make it 9 to 9 and lands absolutely dead perfect on the 8 to lay perfect on the 9. He is on the short rail with the 8 almost hanging in the corner and just had to float down for the 9. When out of no where Chris miscues and sends whitey straight into the corner pocket. Robs wins that game and the next to win the second set.

So they break even at ABC.

Skyline day two.

Equipment: Rob choices a tight table with BC balls and a red circle CB. Chris comes in breaks and runs a few racks and it's on.

Rob is super comfortable on his home court and Chris just can't get use to the equipment. Rob is just running out and running out and Chris is obligated to the chair for the first set with Rob scoring a very easy 11 to 4 or 5 victory.

The second set seemed a formality as Chris was not going to be able to adjust in time and Rob was playing silky smooth. Rob cruises to an easy 11 to 2 victory.

It was a nice matchup and both players were gentleman and shook hands. It is always nice to watch two guys do battle without all the BS. I know Chris has a lot more game than he showed at Skyline but sometimes thats just the way it goes. Hopefully, we can set up more games like this in the future.

Good Shooting.

Thanks for the play-by-play

Good Shooting.

For a thread that was titled "BAD ACTION", this is turning out rather well. Thanks for that excellent description of a classic example of GOOD ACTION. No trash-talk, no woofing, just pure action. This is what it's all about.

I give a lot of credit to both players for showing up to play. The table conditions at skyline are no joke and it was fun to watch how both were to match up at the 2 very different venues.
