Bad play continues to hound Reyes

Efren Reyes managed to squeak by with a win against Poland's Radislaw Babica today 8-7, but he really had to work hard for it. After suffering from numerous uncharacteristic shot errors, Reyes was able to capitalize on nervous misses by Babica on the final frame, with both players on the hill.

Perhaps still haunted by his heart-breaking miss on the 9-ball at yesterday's hill-hill battle against Tony Crosby, Reyes took his time to shoot the penultimate 9-ball to chalk his first win in this year's WPC. The visibly and audibly relieved crowd let out a thunderous applause as Reyes kept his chances alive to repeat as champion of the WPC which he last won in 1999.

I've noticed that the chink in Efrens armor is not from the players or the cash, but the expectations of his country on his shoulders are huge. This is a pressure he's never dealt with and I can see its difficult for him at this time. Hopefully he'll get past this and his game will magically come alive as we know it can. I love it when a person over 50 can beat those 20-30+ years younger than himself. I too watched the match last night, The balls on the break were pouring in for Babica and only one rack I saw he didn't have a shot on the 1, the last game, I think they both missed two balls, Babicas were much easier pots.

Yeah, efren said so as much. everyone's counting on him to win again and he said that it would be shameful if he does not deliver. this, plus the constant autograph-seeking and picture-taking of his fans, really affects his game.

Bad play also seemed to continue for Alcano as well. According to the website, Alcano lost his first two matches and is out. Same with Lining.

Also, Kuo and Chang lost their first games.

I wonder if alternate break has a lot to do with it. Alternate break seems to accentuate your bad days, while winners break accentuates your good days.

I'm predicting a lot of upsets throughout this entire tournament, since the whole thing will be alternate break.

I'm predicting a wildcard from the Philippines to win it all, maybe Corteza or Deluna.

Perhaps there are too many distractions for Efren with the tourney being held in his home country? I know the expectations are high for him but it's not like he is gonna completely crack under the pressure, this guy loves pressure, maybe he just isn't bringing the same level of intensity with all the distractions surrounding him?

Being owed $500,000 could also have affected his concentration. Look at how he and Rodney performed during their first games. However, I would not count the old man out yet. Once and if he goes to the next round, he might still regain his form.

Efren won his match against Radoslaw Babica earlier... he'll be up on the tv table against a spanish guy on the first tv match on day 3... like 4am EST...

According to this schedule from the WPC website, tv games will start at 2 pm Philippine time. That means, it is going to be 1 am US EST before the first game will start. Efren will be up against Roy Apancho from Indonesia.

8 ball

People are focusing on Efren's miss of the 9-ball, but it should be noted that he prepared the 8-ball preceding the 9-ball badly, really there were two missed shots there. Also, as unexpected as his miss of the 9 may have been, that shot cannot compare with his miss of the 8-ball about three games earlier. I love Efren, but I insist that all is not well with him.
Also, penultimate means next to last, ultimate is the last ball.;)

There's just too much pressure on the man.
Seriously, if it were allowed, he should have a shot or two of Ginebra before all his matches. :)
