My guess has always been it was just easier. He worked on a wood lathe. The additional tooling etc to set up, and the expense, for doing points just might not have been reasonable when he had good splices available to him.
I have never seen any quote from him or firsthand info saying why.
Because the original had some sort of gator print leather IIRC. We weren't looking to match it identical, which is why these diamond are also done differently.

Shop space, time, and quality ones were available. He also bought shaft blanks pre-turned, for saving time. Not turned to finish mind you, but maybe taking the first couple of passes off.

I saw a Ferrari at a cheap tire place that sells knock-off brands and retreads. In fact they sell those scam tires retreaded in China and India.
I guess his old tires were worn out.
I guess (hope) the wrap was worn out or damaged. Put whatever you like on I suppose. If you are selling it then I would choose carefully but other than that you can put pink sparkle nylon on it if you want, I really don't care.
It sure might look odd, but as long as it does not damage the cue I really don't care. I sure would rather see that than a fake GB cue being passed off as real.
So I figure it's #2 if we are doing multiple choice.
