Has anyone ever seen a ball broken in half on the break or have you ever done it yourself?

I am only asking because this happened at my pool hall last night when one of my customer broke a ball in half while breaking. I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see the ball.

Yup, I didn't do it and don't remember who did. Old "mud ball" set. Broke the apex ball in a fifteen ball rack in half.

I know three people that have done it...including James Baraks who claims to have done it more than once.

I have seen a cue ball broken by a leather tip, makes me wonder if that means the ball is softer than leather? :D

I was doing a demo breaking once & the guy rolled me the 6 ball to use as a cueball...it shattered a chunk out of it the size of a quarter. Guess it was a really cheap ball set...I have kept it to this day though. Everyone watching was really speechless...:D

I've personally seen three balls break in half (well almost)...half the balls were intact and the other halves were in literally hundreds of pieces. ... j

two of the shattered balls were 10-balls....coincidence of defect ?!?

He musta been using a BALLBUSTA J/B Q.

They've been banned in a couple pool halls in this area;)

I shattered a one ball on the break back in college. Of course I still have the half that remained intact. I wouldn't've believed it if I hadn't been there to see me do it. It serves as a paperweight now.

-yow!

Back in the mid 60's, I was to young to get into the pool halls. A friend of mine and I would ride our bikes about 6 miles out in the country to a small convenience store (we called them "ice houses" back then) where they had two 8' tables in the back. It cost a dime a game to play.

The tables were ancient along with the balls which were the old style clay ones.

I put a little too much pepper on the break shot and the one ball just didn't break, I powdered it.

My friend and I just stood there with our jaws on the floor until the owner came back yelling and screaming for us to get out.

We flew out the back door, jumped on our bikes and never went back.

I was breaking a rack of 8-ball while practicing at home and broke my 12 ball. There were 3 big pieces and then a section that just "exploded", there were fragments everywhere. But nothing that a couple of minutes with the shop-vac couldn't clean up. The ball was more than 10 years old, and must have developed a crack or something, because I'm no monster breaker....although I felt like one for awhile that night!

In one tourny Larry Nevel shattered 3 cue balls!

I heard the same thing before.

I never broken a cue ball before, but I have split a shaft on a Dufferin bar on the break.

My friend Tomo who has a pretty powerful break when he wants to did that one time. The object balls I think were pretty cheap and the head ball just shattered. I wouldn't have believed it had I not saw the pictures and the ball itself.

I was playing three ball in a small game room with 2 guys once. One of the guys breaks, the cue ball hits the 3 balls square and literally splits completely in half. The 3 balls barely moved an inch. The cue ball must have hit the front ball dead center and the cue ball must have hit dead square on the fault and broke dead in half for all of the energy to have been released so as not to disturb the racked balls.

I would not have believed it if told about it.

I can see why.

I busted a one ball. It was on a cheaper set of balls and part of the number had chipped out. We had to stop and vacuum the tables as part of the ball exploded and broke up like glass.

Me too.

About 15 years ago I was breaking a game of 8-ball and the 13 ball split. Half of it shattered and left a little more than half of the ball intact. I still have the intact half. It was a cheap set of balls, but it made me feel like king kong at the time.

i've seen it twice, once the very first break of a tourney, this one actually broke into about a hundred pieces,(never seen anything like that one!), and another time i saw a guy break and it split in two pieces, two different people, two different places.
