The league im in has always been to try and make a ball in on every shot even if you don't have a shot . This year it got voted in for ball in hand . I realize it still 8 ball but its all a new game . I never played it but I watched enough of it on TV to understand the rules . Any advise would be greatly appreciated .

When you have ball in hand, be careful to put the cue ball down in the best place possible for the shot you have. I see a lot of new players put the cue ball about four feet from the ball they're going to shoot instead of a comfortable 8 inches to a foot away. Also, consider how you can solve any problem cluster with ball in hand. Often you can place the cue ball in a position that would be very hard to get to from a shot that makes a break-out very easy.

Here's something to practice when you're watching someone else play: when they have ball in hand, try to think of the very best spot they could put the cue ball for the position they face. (Avoid the temptation to tell them later what they should have done.)

It seems like I should look at each shot at the percentage of me making it verse hiding the cue . The league is partners so hiding the cue when I can to get ball in hand for my partner is the way to go . With this in mind , cue ball control is even more important .

With your old rules, what happened when someone didn't hit their ball first?

Roger...If you're playing offensively, take care not to put the CB straight in on your b-i-h shot (most of the time), because it's too difficult to move the CB to the next location. You can also use ball in hand to break out trouble balls, while pocketing your shot.

Some players make big mistakes with bih. What to do, what to do? My biggest complaint is people who don't grab some angle with ball in hand. It's a great opportunity to make things happen and break balls out, etc. You can also just free up some balls and hook em again! Many options with bih.
