Joe Balsis had a career unlike that of any player in pool history in that he won almost all his major titles when he was 40+ years old. He had been a great junior in the late 1930's with great prospects as a pro, but he hung up his cue to work in the family business, which was the meat business (hence, his nickname "the meatman"). He returned to competitive pool in the early 1960's and quickly became one of the ones to beat. He was still a force at the 1980 World 14.1 Championships, getting all the way to the final at age 59, but he ran into some young upstart who was in the process of winning his first ever world championship. That young upstart was the 26-year-old Mike Sigel.
I didn't know Joe well, but I liked him a lot. What a player!
