Ban safety shots.

Yeah, that's it! I just couldn't remember the details. Thanks for the refresher course.

It's the only time I can remember rules that, situationally, outlawed safeties.

The world team championship was played with no safeties..early 90s?
After any miss, the opposing team could say 'shoot again'.

The Pinoys beat Puerto Rico in the finals.

10 seconds to break, 20 seconds to shoot.....not a lot of fun.

Yes, I remember the event (approx. 1993) but did not know those were the rules. Thanks for the history lesson.

I hear what the OP is saying. There are days I just wanna pocket balls, and there are people who just wanna bring you down by playing safety.

I have a game for this, I call it "No Safe 9 Ball". If you miss or can't continue your run, your opponent gets ball in hand.

Problem (mostly) solved !!

People that like safeties and act horrified at the very thought of them being outlawed flat out cannot play, period.

I don't like BIH after every miss, either, as that is just as low rent. I think safeties should be allowed but you must hit two rails rather than just one. This adds skill to the shot and changes the risk/reward dynamic.

Better players like to have the option of playing defense. Defensive shots require more thought than pocketing balls. I find that most smart players that are also good players love defensive shots. I find that bar room bangers that are not so smart (or drunk) hate defensive play.

If you want to reach the upper echelon of this game you must develop all areas of your game, safety play is one of them.

This got me thinking, what about the opposite, playing on a table with no pockets and the only way you can win is by three-fouling your opponent? That would be a fun (and very educational) game!

We've done that before for practice, it was a normal game but before you can shoot at a ball you had to get the other guy on two fouls first.

First part....is a boxer who ducks a punch or blocks a punch a bad fighter?

Second part.....this would make a good safety MORE valuable

OK... I won't ever call anymore safeties.
6 ball in the side pocket... OH, DAMN IT... missed the shot. And shucks... tough luck to you that the cue ball just happened to get stuck, kissed up behind and against the 8 ball. I sure am glad that I missed that easy side pocket shot because I would have screwed myself on the leave.

Controlling the white ball is perhaps more of a talent than dropping balls. When you can drop the balls where you want them and leave the cue ball (exactly) where you predicted before the shot... then you can be called a real pool shooter. And when your opponent doesn't have a shot and can hide the cue ball very well on the table... you either show him/her that you're ready for any leave they hand out... or you cry like a baby because you never took the time to "MASTER" the game.

Bang away baby... bang away.

BTW... although I didn't have a stellar season when I first started in league play... my safety stats through my first 1 1/2 seasons in 8 ball were 100% in safety recoveries and 96% in effective safeties made.
So... BITE ME!!!

This belongs in the 'best pool hustler in the country' thread.

...how the hell did that SOB beat me...he can't make a ball?

Some of the most fun in pool I had was when we played 5-6 person Pea Pool. Rule #1 was no safeties. We would tell each other what we were attempting so everyone knew people were not shooting two ways or shooting safes. It was wide open and a blast. Of course, this was for short change.

I like wide open. I like attempting that difficult shot with wild A$$ position play. This is real fun to me. Unfortunately, my aggressiveness is tempered in league because as a strategy to win you gotta duck and play good safes. Good lock up safe are also an art unto themselves.

Also, I am not sure how much fun a beginner has when you play them and they get no shots. Do you think they will come back. Will the sport proliferate if it is not fun.

I vote for WOT.

Until professional baseball players start playing without gloves in the field, and all professional football teams eliminate linebackers and cornerbacks, I'm gonna still play safeties till the cows come home

Ban Safety Shots

No.

best,
brian kc

Well put !!! Some additional comments.

NO - Banning Safety Shots ... Who would play One Pocket?
NO - Luck Shots ...Call Ball & Pocket, extra balls stay down
NO - Ball in hand ... CB in kitchen on all scratches. Luck balls spotted lower #'s first
NO - Shooting next # ball in the kitchen on scratch ... SPOT IT with CB in kitchen
NO - Shooting Eight Ball in kitchen on scratch ... SPOT IT with CB in kitchen
Alternate Rule: If OB is in kitchen - CB MUST be shot forward of head string

For those wanting to improve their game, the above will help. Safety play will help develop your position play, banking, kicking, making "spot shots" and most of all, your mental game.

Keep Shooting ... Straight !!!
