Ban safety shots.

Some players today think "playing safe" is an offensive shot

I know what your point is, a player should not win on a safety.....any safety.

This forces a different type of game where you actually have to make a tough shot to win, rather than "hooking/ducking" around to get "ball in hand" (no sport should ever give a player ball in hand with no defensive element at all).

We tried the "no safeties" tournament in Memphis.....Roger Griffis won that one with Earl finishing 2nd, Mike Massy 3rd and I finished 4th. Those rules aren't ideal, they lead to framming at balls (to try and get lucky), and eliminates strategy.

Some players today think "playing safe" is an offensive shot...this has ruined the best characteristic of the game......the strategic battling between the two players....not just "play safe" "kick" "duck" "make 6 easy shots".......:boring:

Safety shots

It really depends on who you are playing, and the layout of the table.
And what game you are playing and how big the table is.
I have l a friend of mine who can shoot out of almost any kick/bank situation playing 8 ball on a bar box with wide pockets.

Hard to really snooker a good player when he has 3 or 4 object balls on the table.

If you going to hook a good player it has to be at the right time or else they can shoot there way out of it.
 
A well-conceived and well-executed safety can be as beautiful as any other shot in the game.
Learn to do them and you will learn to appreciate their beauty.

This was tried once. Allen Hopkins Productions had some "seven ball" events and the rule, unless my memory is failing me, was one safety per rack per player. I don't recall all the details. The game did not catch on.

If you don't like safety play, play the ghost.

Ban the safety, the bank, the jump, the masse, and all kick shots. If a ball doesn't go in the pocket cleanly the ball spots back up. Ball in hand only inside the jaws of either pocket inside the kitchen after a scratch. Maybe this kind of game would be more to your liking????

I think you're referring to Sudden Death 7 Ball, Stu. I think it was played with anything besides pocketing a ball resulted in bih for the other player unless the 1 allowed safety per rack was called. It was predictably sub par.

Yeah, that's it! I just couldn't remember the details. Thanks for the refresher course.

It's the only time I can remember rules that, situationally, outlawed safeties.
