Hi All,

Am I reading this correctly ?

1. Line up the 7 balls as pictured.
2. Start with the cue ball as per picture
3. Make the straight in shot 1st.
4. Replace the cue ball to the original start position ?
5. Work ur way down one side (without disturbing any other balls ?) and replace the cueball to the original start position after each shot ?

Seems it would be tough for a banger to do this drill and not disturb any other balls ? (or maybe this drill is not designed for bangers ??)

Only use one object ball at a time. The shown 7 object balls are just to show you the positions you should practice. Replace the CB at the original spot for each shot.

Agreed. It would be pretty tough not to hit the next ball in line on those far cuts.

You could do it either way, I suppose, but I've only seen these drills for pocketing and position play where you're supposed to control the CB for a shot on the next ball and shoot from the new position.

<jeff's suggestion>

ok yep sweet. Much easier that way.
Just wasn't clear / I wasn't sure if it was a 'setup a line of object balls' type drill or not.

Thanx
Cheers.

Agreed - but then this drill wouldn't really be a 'cut shot drill' if you were working on moving the QB to good position for the next shot down the line. yeah ?

I *think* the blog owner is specifying moving the QB back to the original position for each shot. (but it's still slightly ambiguous IMO)

Cheers.

There are two possible goals to satisfy on every shot.

1. Pocket the ball, this is your main priority
2. Avoid the other balls, and or make position for your next shot.

Good Luck, have fun, and remember to take breaks if you get frustrated.

Basically what I was thinking. Depending on the participant's skill level, ball in hand on all those shots could be appropriate.

I think the drill is not as good as it could be. I think it would be better as a progressive practice drill. (For more info on PP and specific sets of drills for different skill levels, see http://www.sfbilliards.com/Misc/progpract.pdf )

Briefly, the modified drill would be: the object ball goes on the center of the OB spots. The cue ball position moves along the line parallel to the long rail. If you make a shot, move the cue ball to a slightly harder angle. If you miss a shot, move the cue ball to a slightly easier angle. Mark the current cue ball position with a coin so you don't forget where you are. Shoot 10 or 15 shots and at the end the position will tell you how hard a shot you are able to make about 50% of the time.

Repeat the drill to the other side and/or with the object ball in a different position.

Alternatively, you could leave the cue ball in position and move the object ball to the left or right to make the shot harder or easier. You probably want to move the OB only half a ball or a ball diameter at a time.

The standard side pocket position drill is shown in Willie Mosconi's book. You put a semi-circle of five or six balls around the side pocket. Put them out far enough that there is about a ball or half a ball space between them. Start at one end and make them in (position) order to the other end. You will use a lot of soft, precision draw to do this drill.

As a progressive practice drill, the increase in difficulty can come from the number of balls. Start with two and add a ball if you make all or take away a ball if you don't.

It would be impossible for ANYBODY to do this without disturbing the other balls

Looks to be a good drill for CB positioning, also.
Position only one OB on the table for each shot.
1) avoid scratch
2) move CB around to stop near each rail.

alright, I can't seem to figure out that drill and i think it's due to lack of details. Is this a draw drill like the semi circle drill? I mean do you pocket all the balls in the side? Cause there is no way on gods earth that i am playing that cut shot after the first three balls.

Someone mentioned that you only work with the cue and one object ball, so if its a cut shot drill then what's with the first shot being dead straight? I'm lost on this, I can't even really relate it to other drills and i've seen a lot of drills. So what am i missing?

Well, you could call a cut of zero degrees a cut, I suppose.

The original description is above in the original post with the explanation. What the explanation fails to say is "On each shot, there is only one object ball on the table and all you have to do is make that object ball in the side pocket."

As I mentioned above, I think there are better ways to structure this kind of drill.

Thanx for all the input guys, glad I wasn't the only one that was scratching my head. Some good ideas and thoughts there. Will Deffo check out sfbilliards PP drills, sounds like exactly what I'm looking for. Cheers.
