I don't think bank the 8 is a sanctioned ruleset yet.
Usually it's just choice between the 2 players. If you want to include kicks because you think it might be helpful to emphasize that aspect of your game too, then by all means have both of you agree and do it.
If the shot is either too easy to kick, or too tough to bank, then you might want to agree to spot the 8.

There is no rule in place for this situation. Whenever I would play bank the eight we would agree that in this situation we could kick three or more rails for the win.
How does one attempt to take out a hanging ball without chancing a loss of game. If you play a good bank and the ball hangs it would give your opponent an unfair advantage if you had to spot the ball. You could lose even though you played a good shot.

This is what we do as well. No ball in hand, play it as it lies, 3 rail minimum.

Helps to make the game 'more interesting'. It also can be a great way to handicap in 8 ball when matching up with a lesser level player. I hadn't played it in a long time and when matching up with a sparring partner neither of us could remember the rules when it is in the jaws.

This thread just goes to show that are MANY different sets of rules for Eight Ball, more so than any other pool game. It is played with different rules in different parts of the country. I know the BCA rule book has one set of rules, but they are not always adhered to everywhere.
I've played Eight Ball literally dozens of different ways over the years, almost always in bars. You MUST agree on the rules you are playing by before you start the match. This is particularly true for money games. Just a word to the wise.
I once kicked in the Eight ball and the guy said I had to call the rail. That was the end of that game, and I did not get paid.

That is so true. Against my friends, we are mostly evenly matched, we play gentleman's rules. Bank the 8, scratch on the 8 does not count unless you make the 8 (standard BCA), kicks count as banks, no ball in hand if you miss the 8 on a kick. A lot of times we will set up a minimum rails rule before we start, and even if we don't it is unusual to see a 1 railer.

And for those who don't know what this means it is just for this occasion when the 8 is jawed in the pocket. My ability over my opponent to 3 or more rail kick will help me out.
I also play 3 rails when i play "last pocket" in case my opponent missed his 8 ball and left'er hanging. I can then win on a 3 rail kick.
My 2 cents
If any of you have played in South Texas, aka "The Valley" they love playing bank the 8, or more frequently last pocket. When I was younger I hated playing these players because I could always run out to the 8, but then I would have trouble banking it in. I mean the runout was fairly simple, it was just a pain in the ass if you made your last ball in the side then had to bank your 8 into that same pocket. If I remember correctly it came down to 2 players usually banking the ball up and down the table for a while.
