FYI, I just posted a new video that discusses and demonstrates the commonly accepted "bar rules" used in casual, non-league, non-tournament 8-ball play. The differences from the "official rules of pool" are pointed out, examples of common bar rule variations are covered, and many types of shots that are considered “dirty pool” in bar play are demonstrated. Check it out:

As always, I look forward to your feedback, comments, questions, complaints, and requests.

Enjoy!

you know, i too dont like bar rules. but its a different game. its like stick ball in the alley you play by their rules and it can be fun.
you dont use major league baseball rules there. and in a bar its called bar rules for a reason.

and the reason is, that is the rules the local players want in their bar. its their bar. play like they do and enjoy yourself . its almost always for no money or a tiny tournament prize so who cares.
and of course you can win every game as they play so badly, so play like them and lose some. and dont get in a fight over it.

if you were to compete in a boxing match and your fight was against a ten year old you wouldn't knock him out would you.

when i gamble for big in a bar the opponent always agrees to pool room rules, or call just the pocket, and many use ball in hand.

saw a new one-
my teammate called 13 in the corner
it went in off the opponent’s 2 ball
-so how we play, that’s loss of turn
if you use their ball and you don’t call it

-but he picks up his 2 and drops it in
the pocket, saying your ball touched
mine so it stays down🫨

I often find “creative” “bar rules” like this comical.

I had a lot of bs things happen to me over the years in bars but the funniest story I know , I wasn't involved in.
A friend of mine and his buddy went in a bar and as the game went on they were pretty sure they would win , down to the 8 ball and oppponents had a cluster they couldn't break up easily, then the guy shooting broke up their problem balls and scratched, The eight ball was in the kitchen and my buddys friend started to shoot it in the pocket and the guy that scratched said , you have to kick at the 8 ball in this bar when behind the line, they started protesting and about 10 locals got up and the guy said what do I do , my buddy says, "I suggest kicking" . lol

I’ve played in bars with rules like this;
The last game and he wants to play double or nothing. I win but he says I scratched. I say that the CB is in the middle of the table. He says, after 2 or 3 of his friends stand beside him.
We don’t see a CB!

I haven't watched the video yet but I am enjoying the barroom tales. While we didn't swap them around when strangers showed up I did play in a bar with some interesting rules. No big deal once you learned them.

On the road it was common to stop somewhere and the locals make up the rules as they go. No big deal, it was almost certain I could beat anybody in the place. A few creative rules might get them a game or two. What was really fun was reminding them of their rules a little later!

Ninety percent or so of the AZB readers should be able to fade bar rules and win. The real secret is to stay cool and don't contest the rules. Ask about all the things you can think of and expect to still have a couple things come up. Last pocket eightball and bank the eight are both played some places. First time somebody took my money for not banking the eight I was annoyed but looking around at the other tables they were banking the eight too. Local custom, no problem.

I don't think the rules have to be the same everywhere. Makes things more fun that they aren't! One of my favorites is any ball off the table is a dollar for the jukebox. I don't mind people that can jump nearly as much as people that can't jump but are always trying to.

One thing to keep strangers out of trouble, if you are planning anything but the simplest shot, ask first! I have had banks and kicks declared illegal. No problem, I didn't let the opponents bank or kick either.
