From the AZB story on the NJ Straight Pool Championship

Barouty had something to say to Manalo. "Once I saw how Marlon Manalo played the straight pool and I concluded that some of the strategies in straight pool written in the books should be amended."

"I even asking myself if I still believe in the book of straight pool." quoted again by Barouty and laughed

Anyone have any insite on this. Just how did Manalo's SP game differ from the book?

I had the same question after reading about Marlon's straight pool victory. I hope someone can enlighten us. Peace.

When Steve Lipsky see this, we should get an answer.

I asked the same question a few days ago and SL just said DB had a great respect for his game. I replied with another specific question about the patterns and there was no response. Perhaps he and DB didn't discuss the patterns of Manolo.

High praise indeed from a great straight pool scholar like Barouty. Typical Danny, too. One thing I've always admired about Danny is his outstanding sportsmanship and general willingness to give his opponents credit when it's due.

Sorry, didn't see the response dmg. Actually, I spoke with Danny yesterday and he made his comments more clear. He considers Marlon a tremendous pocketer who plays 14.1 better than his countrymen. Both Parica and Santos were at the tournament and neither was very impressive. This is not to take anything away from their games; they just don't have a real background in 14.1. (And Parica had just come back from a grueling week at the US Open, so he may have been tired to begin with.)

I actually never had the opportunity to see Marlon play, as we were always playing at the same time. So I can't comment on his pattern play, but I know he was running a lot of balls quite consistently. Whatever he was doing couldn't have been too wrong, lol.
