Bata due today, eyes No.1 in IPT‘King of Hill’

Efren "Bata" Reyes arrives today before an adoring nation proud of his string of achievements on the world pool stage, including the just-concluded IPT World 8-ball Championships in Reno, Nevada last Sunday where he won a whopping $500,000 prize, the biggest purse staked in pool history.

The amiable Reyes, whose victory in the 1999 World 9-ball Championship in Cardiff, Wales elevated pool into the major league and further affirmed his celebrity status, planes in at 5 a.m. on board Philippine Airlines Flight 103 with buddy Francisco "Django" Bustamante and manager Rolly Vicente.

He will only have a day rest as he is set to see action in the fourth and final leg of the San Miguel Asian 9-ball Tour beginning Friday in Jakarta.

With his recent earnings, Reyes surged past Thorsten Hohmann of Germany in the 2006 IPT Season Player Rankings and could well be on his way to clinching the No. 1 spot in the 2006 IPT "King of the Hill" Invitational Shootout in Las Vegas in December.

The IPT "King of the Hill" Invitational Shootout is the culmination of the year-long IPT series of tournaments which Reyes actually won last year when he beat seeded Mike Sigel in the championship to pocket the $200,000 purse.

Under the format, the top money earner of the 2006 will be seeded in the final where he will face the top finisher among the 40 players who would be invited to the event slated Dec. 12-17 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The King of the Hill tourney is scheduled in the same week of the Asian Games, thus keeping Reyes off the Asiad-bound RP billiards squad.

Counting his $36,000 earnings in the season, Reyes now has $536,000 in winnings, relegating Hohmann to second with $350,000, the bulk of which he won in ruling the IPT North American 8-ball Champion over Filipino Marlon Manalo, who had $99,000.

Another Filipino, Dennis Orcollo, will take the third spot with $144,000 winnings after he won $66,000 for finishing fifth in the world 8-ball tilt.

Bustamante and Rodolfo Luat will join Reyes in the Indonesia joust where the Filipinos are eyeing a rare sweep of this year’s staging of the annual circuit, Asia’s premier 9-ball event.

No stopping Bata in pool

WHEN EFREN “Bata” Reyes ruled World Pool 9-Ball championship in 1999, billiards halls mushroomed almost everywhere. For winning that prestigious tournament, Reyes reinforced his status as one of the legends in the sport.



As if it was not enough to prove his world-class act, he topped the World 8-Ball Open, a feat that gave his countrymen so much pride and joy.

Now that he pocketed the biggest prize in the sport, expect a new wave of Reyes’ wannabes.

For sure, Reyes will get the same reception just like when boxing icon Manny Pacquiao arrived following his sensational triumph over Mexican Erik Morales early this year.

The 52-year-old Reyes arrives from Los Angeles at 5 a.m. today on board Philippine Airline flight 103, three days after winning the richest ever prize purse in pool history.

The Hall-of-Famer is accompanied by former world No. 1 and bosom buddy Francisco "Django" Bustamante and long-time manager Rolly Vicente.

Early Monday morning, the charismatic Filipino rewrote billiards history when he beat American Rodney Morris, 8-6, in Reno, Nevada to win the staggering prize money worth 0,000 (roughly R26 million).

Reyes received only ,000 when he ruled the world 9-ball championship seven years ago, but that momentous and inspiring event was credited for having turned around for good the fortunes of billiards in the country.

"Efren just made our country proud with his latest feat," said billiards patron, sportsman-businessman Aristeo ‘Putch’ Puyat. "He brought so much joy to our countrymen. Marami ang nagsasabi na matanda na siya. Pero kahit may edad na siya, pinatunayan pa rin niya na kaya niya pa ring manalo kahit na dun sa mas bata sa kanya."

Puyat, the long-time benefactor of both ‘Bata’ and ‘Django’ said the supposed schedule audience at Malacañang this afternoon has been shelved for the moment since the two are set to fly to Jakarta, Indonesia tomorrow for the final leg of the San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour.

"Pagbalik na lang nila from Jakarta tsaka na lang sila pupunta ng Malacañang," Puyat said.

And what’s the likely itinerary for Reyes in his short, 24-hour stay in the country?

"Malamang magtutulog lang yan sa bahay nila sa Pampanga," said Puyat.

Pretty close.

Meaning he'd sleep in his house then fly to Jakarta.
Truth be told, his hangers-on have been drinking before he got there and Efren is going to pick up the tab.:eek:

A lot of people say he's old. But even though he's getting older, he still proved he can win over those younger than him.

"When they (Efren and his entourage) come back from Jakarta, that's when they'll go to Malacañang," Puyat said.

This is even a greater feat seeing how rigorous of a schedule he had to play to reach the finals. My hat is off to him.
 
Efren's cornerman

Is there any reason why Efren chose Santos Sambajon to be his cornerman in the final match instead of his buddy, Francisco Bustamante?

I think I saw Alex Pagulayan and Bustamante watching the finals so that means he was available if Efren wanted him to be his cornerman. Just curious.

Aside from Alex and Bustamente, who were the other Filipino players who watched the Rodney vs Efren match? I heard that Efren, Alex and Bustamante tend to bunch together and that Manalo and Orcollo tend to set themselves apart from the group. What about the rest of the Filipino contingent?

I wonder that myself. BTW, this might sound stupid but what does exactly cornerman do? To get advise from? I mean who would Efren asks advice from? He is THE MAN and the MASTER.

from my experience, it seems that the attitude Efren, and Django have is "It doesn't matter"... Meaning,,, it doesn't matter who my corner man is, If I win, I win, If I lose, I lose. Efren knows he certainly can win... For all you know know, Efren could have asked django ..

E: "So you wanna be my cornerman?"
D: "Nah, I don't feel like it, ask santos"

One thing i really like about the IPT coverage is that they put mics on the players.... It's fun to hear what the Efren and Django say when they get out of line or break dry..... Maybe after video edit, they can translate subtitle tagalog to enlish.

Perhaps Santos' command of the English language having lived here in the US for many years would come in handy if there was a rule decision like climbing on all fours to shoot a shot.

Santos english is not any better than Efren's.
Efren is very very very superstitious. Efren most likely chose him out of superstition.
 
the filipinos

earlier someone asked about how the filipinos group together. from what i saw at bugsy's this past december the associations go like this, efren and francisco share hotel rooms in the states. if that doesn't tell you anything then i don't know what will. the owner of bugsy's is perry mariano, he bankrolls (from what i saw) dennis orcullo, ronnie alcano, and jeff bata deluna. those i know for sure. i'm guessing that antonio ga ga gabica is also with them. it's like how "stables" are in japanese sumotori.

as far as cornermen goes. it's not that he likes santos more than django or alex. maybe he chose santos because he is older and has a little more experience, maybe the've known each other longer. it's not that santos knows more than efren but it's always good to have someone in your corner cheering you on, calming you down, and for moral and emotional support. remember they are very far away from home and family. another pair of eyes from a different perspective is always helpful. you may be doing some weird thing that you are not concious of and it's good to have someone in your corner telling you to change this or do something different. also, alex and fancisco were sitting right there behind efren so they probably chimmed in when ever they felt like it.
