BCA National - Dress Code

Honestly, I hate the pants thing in the dress code. Usually dress in clean shorts with a collared shirt for daily life in Vegas. Sometimes even in January. Going to miss the underground garage at the Riv. Used to show up in shorts and then change into dress pants to play. When I was done, back to shorts. All in the comfort of the underground.

Understand why most of the major sanctioning bodies require clean dress pants including denims. I've seen some pretty shaggy looking cloths at various pool events around the country as well as on the live streams. Was somewhat taken back in April when APA allowed players to play in shorts Thursday and Friday. Dress code for Saturday was dress pants. Guess I'm just too old :o .

They have more detail on the dress code, particularly enforcement. See Section D. The previously noted severity of penalties concerning hearing impediments are actually not quite as bad as they sound, BUT...

The clothing enforcement this year and into the future is dead serious. No more skating or being able to start a match out of dress code and then finish it without penalty.

In a nutshell - violations will now be penalized anytime, even after a match has started. If it can be corrected immediately without leaving the table, the correction will be allowed with no penalty applied. If it can't be corrected immediately - first violation is a one game penalty plus warning, then the match can be finished out of code. Second violation in any future match - DQ from the remainder of all 2013 Championship events. Note - for first violation, the game penalty is not applied if the opponent is on the hill, but the warning is still given and the violation is recorded as a first occurrence.

Violations will be penalized on sight by any referee, without having been called to the table.

All of the "what-ifs" are answered in Regulation D7. Especially for team captains, it deserves serious study. Every team captain will receive a copy during check-in. Hard copies of the entire document will be available at the Registration Desk.

Can you post a picture of the "ear shorts" ? I am trying to imagine what they look like.

As far as dress code, it does no good if it isn't enforced for each and every player and it would have to be widely advertised so that people couldn't say they didn't know about it.


I was once told that I couldn't play on the final day of a tournament in Vegas unless I had dress pants and a collarded shirt. I had only packed jeans for the trip. I spent half a day calling various stores and wound up paying $100 to have a pair of pants delivered to my hotel room and they didn't fit. The next day I saw people playing in jeans and collarless shirts. Guess the dress code didn't apply to them.

If you're going to have a dress code it must apply to every single person playing and it must be widely known before the tournament starts.

Much better than the humidity in other areas.

You're correct Mark, though the record for Las Vegas is 118 degrees in July 1931.

According to the forecast it will average around 105 degrees for the period of BCAPL & USAPL National Championships. It will be hot regardless during the day time but it does cool off in the evenings to the point where you can walk around the strip. Which is what most people like to do anyways to truly enjoy the beauty of the city.

Tournament area will be kept cool, and even sometimes chilly to some people. I highly recommend having a long sleeve shirt handy as we all rather play in warmer condition than cold.

I don't know how many people would be commuting - walking to Rio from different hotel but be smart, dress very light to walk but carry another outfit that you can change into during the match to play comfortably.

Plus, it's very easy to get sick when you walk in to AC'd area and stay in your sweat drenched clothing... I am saying that as I'm kicking myself in the butt for not getting out of my wet clothes... I have a nasty cold and it's 106 out side... :(

It may feel like a hassle to carry extra set of clothes but hey you're already carrying your cue case and sometimes when staying off site, you have to be prepared for some inconveniences. What's important is taking good care of yourself so the trip is enjoyable and you get to do what you came to Vegas for.

Think there needs to be a significant clarification on the stated dress code on the BCAPL website. The complete dress code of 2013 states approved clothing includes "neat and clean jeans, business casual or denim SHORTS ok". Does than mean clean and physically complete shorts are now OK? Thanks for the clarification.

Lyn - yes, shorts are allowed, denim included. The key is the cut and style, both of which must be conservative. Read "conservative" as approximately mid-thigh to knee length and not excessively baggy. Excessively baggy will mean the hems hanging to mid-calf and the rise only coming up to mid-thigh. That ain't gonna cut it. Also no hot pants. If it was in style in the NBA in the 70's, forget it. Also NOTHING athletic. If it's got a stripe or it's nylon / mesh / dri-fit / board shorts / no fly, forget it.

In short (no pun intended) - if it looks punk / grunge / sloppy / athletic in any way / ass crack / waist line below the waist / dragging the floor / overly "sexy" (for the females), or just plain stupid, it ain't gonna work.

Pictures of what is/is not acceptable will be posted around the venue. The refs should all be on the same page as best they can be. A dress code decision by a referee IS subject to protest, but "this is all I brought" will carry absolutely ZERO weight.

The only reasonably priced solution for pants/shorts emergencies that I currently know of will be Ross dress for less on the strip across from Excalibur, about 1.5 miles away. Not gonna do ya any good if all you have is 15 minutes. Even if some vendors end up carrying pants/shorts, getting them fitted/purchased and getting changed is gonna take more than 15 minutes. And remember - if the violation is discovered after your match has started, there is NO grace period or break allowed, unless you still happen to have your 5-minute time out. If it can't be fixed without leaving the table, say goodbye to a game.

Thanks for the post. E-mailed Bill Stock directly. Trust his word above all others. Can't tell you how happy I am to see this change. Whether it is just for this year or not. Live about twenty minutes from the Rio. Now i won't have to bring a change of clothing with me.

To me, this is the classiest of all the amateur national events. Hope they revert to dress slacks for Tuesday night finals for all singles and doubles events. Got a charge out of playing before the "crowd" during the finals of the scotch doubles a few years ago. Was a shame the team finals occurred after Midnight last year. Crowd was kind of thin.

Personally, I am not a fan of this change. I would prefer it to get stricter, with competitors having to wear dress trousers or smart casual trousers, with dress shoes, as I think it adds a little more prestige to an event to have a smart dress code.

This is a small quibble with what will I am sure be a great event, but I would like to know what the thinking is behind the change.

Would also like it to be more formal.
Just somehow brings more class into the game vs. wearing shorts,
which to me sounds kinda icehouse or bar like

I wish they would allow non collared shirts. There are many non collared shirts that are dressy and not offensive.

Still forbid the T shirts if you have to, (maybe because some of the "advertisements", but I don't believe I understand this ruling.

Would you be willing to dress better if some corporate sponsor add $2,000.000.00 added money???? Even NASCAR, and the PGA has a Dress Code, but they also have bigger purses to win, and lots of corporate sponsor adding million of dollars annually to their events,
 
How about cargo shorts which basically have 2 extra pockets. Are they allowed?
