Danny, Thanks for the thoughtful post, with no drama and insults. You come off better when using the old noodle rather than emotion, I mean that.

I appreciate your respect for the difficulty of achieving 526 with a camera set up on a table of lesser difficulty. As you stated it would probably take some top pro's a couple of years to break it.

If the table in Virginia is still there and many others about the country I would bet exist. Why not take some friends out occasionally with a camera and start cracking at the 526 on your own time. With enough eyes plus a camera I think you would have all the evidence needed to have a legitimate new high run.

It should also be easy to get a table with pocket size and playing size similar to the Mosconi high run table and set it up at home and you could then break the record multiple times if you want to. Remember nobody offered $20K when Mosconi set the record.

Good thoughts, I do not have access to a camera that would hold over three hours of play, I have a job, and Mosconi was getting paid by Brunswick to do the exhibition. Please note that I did not say I would be willing to travel back in time and bet my own dough against Mosconi in his prime on the 5 by ten. My first instructional book was Mosconi's book and I know he was great, I think Lassiter was a champ also but they are before my time. I practice e few times a month (always 14.1) and I never record it anymore as I used to. Remember when I type about pool I am always passionate about the game and what it takes to improve the professionalism. So even when I am using the ol' noodle as you phrase it, there is emotion in what I say - that is cause I used to make a living at it. I save all the dramatic emotions for a forum like this, when I compete I try very hard to act like a professional. I don't need the shark moves in order to distract and or create drama.

Danny, I've seen you play at the Md. 14-1 State Championship at Big Daddy's Billiards and I can honestly say, you always conduct yourself like a professional and you definitely don't need any kind of shark moves to win. You are one heck of a player and I look forward to seeing you play again sometime.

And at the old Bill/ Billie's in Arnold, he played 14.1 all day, then walked over to the 3c tables and joined us for some more cue-sports.

I say, I do believe Danny loves the game.

No gambling problem

It's this kind of poppycock that smears he fine game of pool. Get a job already and stop ruining the game for folks who don't have a gambling problem.

I can't imagine a fellow aze'r who has been programed by his other like minded railbirds to think rationally. Just to let you know poolmouse - I am very content with just practicing the game I love and not betting a quarter. John and I have had some differences and I have seen what I think he needs to do to win when he feels the heat - and it's pityful. The other fellow (swag) felt he needed to stick his nose in and make a statement about my post and I am sure yall are buddies or whatever. I also am not so shallow that I judge a persons character based on what level of a pool player they are. When someone has to pull moves in order to win I will call it how I see it and when the rolls are not rising for Schmidt he WILL get totally disrepectful towards his opponent.

Thanks for the kind statements about my professional spirit while competing in the game of 14.1 (Rich R. and in Maryland). I do appreciate it when I hear positive comments pertaining to this, however when someone disagrees with one of my posts and they make a statement pertaining to my mental health - they are only taking a cheap shot. But I guess that is how some people operate, I think it's just their way of showing their fear, cause deep down they know there is a chance that I might be right. So for anyone who disagrees with one of my posts - the easy way out of the debate is just to make a cheap comment based off of wordly gossip u have heard from your little crony buddies and talk about my mental health as a way of diverting the topic which was pool related.

Now Danny I dont agree with everything you always say.I have found that there are alot of azers in this forum that are quality people as many might be railbirds and feel the need to sit at a keyboard and make insults and many are just good people and if givin the chance to know them on a kind level most of us would get along just fine. There are people like Dennis Walsh,Bill Marop,Steve Kurtz and many others that try hard to help our sport going with their time and money and thats what we all would like to see. Some of their choice of friends arent that great though haha.Lou Figueroa Is also a great voice to this forum.
I had a disagreement with Lou 1 time and I was a little out of line and we got past it as it took me like an hour to run 110 balls in the sbe event a couple years ago and it tied up 1 of the tables but I could not help it as people and even players were walking into the booth were I was shooting with zero respect and had to wait countless times for them to move out of the way and to find out he was upset that Charlie Williams cut in front of him to try to qualify for the top 8 field of players after he waited hours in line to shoot.
Also Danny I have seen your game at your best and still think your are the top American 14.1 player and put you right there with Ortmann,Holmann and Cohen who are the most recent people to win big 14.1 Titles and have high runs without the use of 2 different color towels nearby with silicone in 1 of them and wax in the other to tell the difference between them but thats another subject.
As far as sharking and moves you mentioned it is coming clear to most people with open eyes and ears that saw the recent Tar event with Corey and J.S. to see the moves that J.S. used to even a good friend of his to gain an advantage and change the momentum of that match.
Now as far as Mosconi I really dont understand the whole beat his 526 run as it is said he ran over 500 about a dozen times and over 400 more than 50 times and 15 World Titles and with the cloth, balls, cushions and certainly no towels with chemicals on them to gain an unseen advantage I think those records and stats speak for themselves.
The only thing that makes me sick is the constant talk down of Mosconi and Lassiter at events and in conversations from J.S. that they were nobodys and wouldnt have any chance at all today and its classless and I would expect things like that to be said from such a user and jealous person like him.I for one am thankfull for what Mosconi and others did to help pave the way for pool and I hope others are also.Danny I hope you play at the MD event this year as I will be there and I certainly look forward to see others there.

Thanks for the kind words Bobby. And I think we're past the stuff about the long run, which actually was just a humorous observation and had nothing to do with tying up the table. Regardless, I do have high regard for your game. My only quarrel with you now is about some of the high runs you've had. As the great astronomer Carl Sagan once said, "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence."

As to the JS thing, I didn't watch it. So could you or someone provide and honest and fair reporting of what transpired?

Lou Figueroa

Haha Lou.I wouldnt call to many of my runs that Extraordinary. For most people that know me know I never have had the time or desire to go out and compete in many tourneys but travel and play when my schedule allows it.I practice quite a bit near my home in our local poolroom and almost all I play is 14.1.As much as I practice I really am disappointed that I have not put up more consistant high runs and it just depends on how much time I have to try when I go practice.Do you really think 30 runs over 200 is alot as I dont.
Since I basically stopped playing for about 6 years and started again about 5 years ago it seems I only get a big run (200+) it seems like every few months so like I said it could be much better and the conditions in the poolroom are very bad like the loud jukebox, people constantly interupting my practice and the cigar and cigarette smoke is horrible.
I have seen a few statement and questions so I will try to answer a few.
I can not hang up a camera for some type of live streaming as the owner of the poolroom doesnt really have any interest in having that and its mostly a restaurant and a club and pool is a very small part of their business and Im sure it would either be broke or stolen within days.
For me to carry and set up a camera everytime I practice is just annoying and also brings into a situation of many things and questions at the poolroom also but recently I have recorded a few sessions and will be working on saving any nice runs and will figure out how we will share them either by downloads or dvds to certain people. This shouldnt be very hard but there are many variables and will try to get something done for the players of 14.1 but not because I have to prove anything to a few doubters on this forum and all runs and video will be on the square with no altering of any video and certainly no polishing, juicing the cue ball or wiping of any balls with a loaded towel.

Well then OK. If it's too tough, it's too tough.

Personally, I have found that a little $100 Flip camera on a $5 tripod does fine when I occasionally want to record myself. Really tiny and easy to carry. No hanging nothin', sets up anywhere in 10 seconds, and it's in HD :-)

Nobody annoys me or asks anything. Most people respect that I'm trying to improve my game and leave me alone.

Negative post

In truth, I think that the pace of play is ridiculously slow today, and each year it seems that it gets slower.

No, this is not a generation of notoriously slow players like Dick Lane or Frank Taberski, but I've been to 15 different events since 1976 that were either PPPA World 14.1 championships, US Open 14.1 championships , or Dragon 14.1 championships, and there are more slow players today than ever before.

The sad result in 2011 was that practically nobody witnessed the final, which didn't begin until close to midnight on the final day and lasted until about 3:00 AM.

I think it is important to note that I can play at a much quicker pace when playing on a table with bigger pockets. The diamond table and the way the shelf of the pocket extends deeper into the slate is a huge reason why I play slower than when free-wheeling on a 5 inch brunswick with shallow pockets. So I think your statement is a bit of a generalization - and a bitter one at that, the main difference on the the pro spec Diamond vs a 5 inch brunswick pocket is when attempting to pot a ball down the rail (if you don't slow down the pocket will spit at you like a black mamba). It is my view that if they had a 14.1 tour with shallow 5" pockets then the pace of todays players would accelerate alot (I know mine does). There would always be exceptions but I think this is accurate and maybe your living in the past a little too much yngest old schooler. Just a thought sir.

when were clay balls repalced with plastic? mosconi 526?

So when did the change from clay to plastic balls happen? How long did it take proliferate through the places where serious players played? I notice lot of posts mention use of clay balls in the 50s or even 60s. I question if this is right. I started poo when Eisenhower was pres. I saw some clay balls then, but crumbly really old ones on home tables. Even the small town pr in TN were using plastic balls as best I can remember. When Mosconi played Nashville in 62 balls used were centennials and were the house ones and not brought by Mosconi. Were the centennial balls introduced in the 1940s at the time of the centennial tables? Were they not plastic instead of clay. I think that like today top players would have been using the latest & greatest equipment available. I really doubt that they were playing clay much balls in the 50s. Who out there has more info on this?
