come into my world ....

i am u, u are me, we are one, one are we. the experiences that i have had playing pool are similar to that of many of u here . we all know the code, we all speak the language, we all are affected/influenced/enlightened/educated by each other, and we have our own society whether we know it or not... Just like golf, those of us in the pool community are a brethren and we all know each other ( or know someone that does ) ....

mainstream society has painted an ugly picture of me, but i don't care, i know that i am not understood, appreciated, or loved like i should be . i represent the 5% of people that do not depend on the good graces of society . We don't not need the pat on the back or the stamp of approval from non-pool playing squares ( so to speak ) to exist and thrive! Pool players are some of the most intelligent, strong willed, intuitive, creative, gifted people on earth and i tip my hat to those that have never compromised their belief in the directions of this great sport and i tip my hat to those of us that love who we are ( pool players ) and what we do. I can't forget those who have never been afraid of not being thought of as "normal" and not embarrassed because we don't have a so-called "regular" life and pool is much more than a hobby or pastime that is shared with drinking buddies .

Pool is sex, drugs and rock&roll!. From Jack Hynes to Jack Cooney . Pocket billiards is all encompasing and the greatest sport/game ever created. Pool is an education in and of itself, their are negotiating skills learned in pool halls that people spend 10's of thousand's of dollars to learn from various gurus .

We must always remember that we are a unique and special type of people and we should be glad of who we are and have pride in our shared love of the green felt.

So whenever anyone asks you .....

why do u sometimes curl your index finger on your middle finger ( unknowingly making a bridge ) when u are at your desk ? ......" because i am a pool player"

why do u use terms like "the nuts" when referring to the 99cent special chicken dinner @ popeyes on tuesdays ?......."because i am a pool player"

why do u plan your vacation every year at the same time ? every year u travel to a hotel in Kentucky that serves crappy food. why ? ...."because i am a pool player"

why do u say that the new mustangs could give the new camaros the "7 ball" ? ......"because i am a pool player"

Being a pool player ( or pool impersonator ) is nothing to be ashamed of, we should embrace it and feel good about who we are just as a golfer would .

Bravo! ... and the music just keeps getting better

Thanks for the refreshing post

(have almost all of Miles' albums)

I never went to college. Everything I learned in business, I learned from the pool hall. I see Ivy League graduates all the time who can't negotiate, elicit actions, or understand competition like a hardened pool player.

Nice read.

When they ask you "why are you living out of your car?" ..... because I'm a pool player

When they ask you "why are you such a dishonest, opportunistic grifter?" ..... because I'm a pool player

When they ask you "why are you a degenerate alcoholic whose teeth are falling out for lack of dental insurance?" ..... because I'm a pool player

If there's one thing I've learned in the pool hall, it's "for the love of god go to college."

By this post, I will assume you are the type of person who sees the glass half empty instead of half full.
This thread reminds me of something that happened to me years ago that still makes me chuckle.
I went to a baby shower with a high school girlfriend.(we had been out of school for about ten years) She wanted me to go so I could see all the girls from school I hadnt seen since we all graduated.
There were about 15 to 20 girls there. Everyone was very happy to see me. And, I will admit, I was happy I decided to go. Until, LOL, someone suggested we go around the room and tell everyone what we have been up to in our lives. As the women went around the room and were telling their storys of getting married and having babys, I suddenly realized that my story was going to be very different.LOL Well, it was my turn, and I told my story of becoming a poolplayer. LOL (I made it short) Wow, it was actually very funny, the blank stares on all their faces. It was like an EF Hutton commercial. LOL And then someone says, "Oh, thats nice".
LOL. The expression on all their faces was priceless.
All of these women looked very happy to be settled down and have a family and I was happy for them. But ya know, that type of lifestyle just wasnt for me. I hope they were happy for me too. LOL I just dont think they really understood, which is ok. To each their own.
I am happily married to a poolplayer and we have no children. I consider myself very blessed, "because I am a poolplayer"

Me too... and I still listen to them ;) ... along with all his proteges (sp?). From Herbie to Zawinul to Keith Jarrett to Monk to Corea, from Ron Carter to Mirislav Vitos and Sam Jones, from Philly Joe to DeJohnette to Louis Haynes, from Cannonball to Shorter to Trane, from McLaughlin to Santana to Joe Pass, and all the others.

You know the world is probably right to label as odd those people who love jazz and pool. We just aint "right".

Nice post Cannonball.
