beginner Rank question

I would like to give both of these games 9 and 10 Ball a try. I don't think that I am a D player. I would like to think I would be a C+/B- player, I know that I can run 2 racks straight out of a set of 9, on a (very) good day. I would say on an average day would say at least 1 rack. I can capitalize on a foul and run out the remainder.
I would like to just see what would happen if I asked to start off as a D+, C player minimum and raise in the ranks the more I play, and see where I settle in within the rankings.
I would like to think that I would rise in the ranking fairly quickly to the category which would suit my skill level.
I just don’t want to step on anyone’s toes if they find me to strong for the lower levels.

I have been told by a AAA player that I would be a B+ player because of how well I know my banks and how to get out of being hooked. Then he turned around and told me that I would be a C player on just straight out potting balls.

Would it be wrong for me to ask to be ranked with the C players?

From your description of your ability, I think you and I are about equal shooters. I too consider myself a D player on a normal day and a C to C- player on a real good day. If I get put in a handicapped tourney/league as a B player, I'm gonna get my head handed to me. I would say tha a C handicap is a decent place for you to start.

If you can run out a rack in a set just about each time, and run out with ball-in hand more often than not if there are 4-5 + balls left, you are higher than a C.

Exactly that is the description of a B or better player. C players do not run out more than 1:40 racks of 9 ball. If you run 2 out of 7 racks in a tournament as a C player your spot will be moved up immediatly. Most rooms start you a bit high and let you work down to a rating, so as to not upset the regulars.

9ball takes a lot of getting used to so give yourself some time first then reassess after a few tourneys. But do what you want, only god can judge you.

I was joking but if someone wants to give up weight for whatever reason, they should be able to.

This I can understand. I am going to try and start playing around with smash and run. I will try to use this link below. And keep alittle chart.

Just never know and surprise myself :D

My advice Spaz, excuse me, I mean Spantz, is to forget the D, C, B, stuff and go right into calling yourself an A. Once the word gets around that you're an A player, you'll be in like flynn.
Buy yourself one of those Cowboy style cases (not that Chinese crap, but the one by Justice), sling it over your back and just hang out. When you walk by, people will whisper. "Hey, that guy's an A. We better not mess wit him."
Take my word for it, you'll be a new man. :)

I am not worried about been a new man, I already know who I am. And I have nothing to prove. Other then to myself.

Randy is just fine, you don't have to worry about making my Alias shorter !!

Wish we had a standard for a rateing system :-(

If your not looking to (steal) than my opinion would be (B) maybe a B+ depending on how the Tournament Director looks at it.
If he wants to protect his normal players that support his tournament then you would be put in as a B+
It's always easier/Safest to put you in higher than lower & have you steal supportring players money.

Example: I was put in as a (C) because I used to be a (c) player when I stopped 20 years ago.
I probably could have went in as a D+ but I would have been embarrased & if I came in the money.
The players would have killed the Tournament Director just on my (Past experience)
so I was put in as a (C) player It took me almost a year (about 20 Tournaments) to finally place in the top 4 in that tournament.

So consider yourself lucky if you get in as a (B)

If you are better than what you are ranked, you will be moved up in due time. There is nothing wrong with that as long as you are not trying to hide it. If people complain about your ranking the fault will lie on the tournament director, not you. I wouldn't ask to be moved up in rank, you should earn it through placing well in the tournament.

This is why I posted the question, and this answer is exactly what I was thinking. And posting here just to re-inforce my thought proved worthy.

Plus, I didn't want to step on anyones toes (regulars) with being ranked alittle lower then I should be. I would rather earn my way up in the ranks. Plus, I have to get use to the 9' tables again. Been about 10 years since I have played on them.

Good way to look at it man, and best of luck with your rise through the ranks.

I really don't understand why you would ever ask to be ranked lower than where you think you play. Is it to build up some condfidence on your way up the rankings?

I did the 9 ball rating scale last night for the first time. I scored a 48 on my home 8' table using the magic rack to break. That score puts me at a B, but that might change if I did it more. I think that using the magic rack helps as you get more balls on the break, and the table opens up more. I had two run outs after 3 ball breaks, and 2 racks where I only scored 2 points (shows my incosistency and the importance of the nreak with this scale). I would say that your description of play sounds similar to mine, and I would suggest that I am normally a C+ player from what I have read, with the ability to go up to a B- or down to a C.
If I was going to play in a league or tournament, which I have never done so I have no actual ranking, I think that I would just tell them that I beat the 6 ball ghost on my 8 footer about half the time, and occasionally beat the 7 ball ghost, and let them figure out where they want to rank me. The ranking will fall where it should as I play. You also have to remeber that the ranking will depend somewhat on the level of player where you are, and the director should know that level and better be able to rank you.

If your not hiding your speed , your not stealing. When you should move, you'll be moved. Don't sweat your rank. Just play pool as well as you can on any given night.

I, on the other hand , prefer to hide my speed ( which ain't high) so I may steal as much as possible from D players and drunks.

No such thing as D players in the FQSB that you are talking about OP. From what you say, you are to me a C player. If you've never played tournaments, the first few could be tough because you play people, who suck, but have been sucking for a long time. They know that at that caliber, most times it's the one that plays not to lose instead of the one playing to win that actually wins it. Miss a few shots because of the nerves and bye bye.

Anyways, before you can do your first tournament, you will be ranked by a tournament director. If he ranks you in C class, and you are as good as you think, just go through the class in 3-4 tournaments and you'll become a B fast. If you don't hide anything, people won't judge.

Rating yourself to low

I think your rating yourself to low. I'm a (C) player my average run is about 3-4 balls, And I think of myself as a high (C) player. But on the other hand I have seen many players run more balls than me & I find a way to win.

Some people just can't win no matter what spot they get rated at. But they do ruin a tournament when you put them in to low.
