Is there some sort of filler around the maple point above the lazy s's? Glen
Yes. That is epoxy showing in the slight mismatch where the base of the curly maple forearm meets the base of the groove in the lacewood butt. The match is not perfect but for a long point with a fairly sharp point bases, it's pretty darn good.
Keep in mind this is a highly magnified picture. The lazy s's are only .030" wide & the base of the point looks to be approximately the same size. Many of the SP blanks available today have bases that are almost .125" wide & they can be even sloppier. Few would stand up to this same scrutiny.
Another nice feature of this blank that doesn't really show in the picture is that there were absolutely no glue gaps along the length of the points. This is a good indication of accurate machining, careful preparation & attention to detail.
I've only worked on a few of these blanks but every one has been as nice or nicer. And I love the long points!
To answer the few emails: there are 20 equally spaced s's below the points and 24 equally spaced in the lower set. This keeps the spacing between the s's consistent for a smoother appearance. Adding the 4 diamonds in the points & the 8 diamonds below brings the total to 56 ivory inlays.
Link is not working.
Any way to see the rest of the cue and points?
