Bender Shafts with Phenolic Inserts

Hey AZ,

I am curious about Mike Bender's cues. Did Bender use phenolic inserts in his older cues only? My sneaky pete has a phenolic insert, and I read on a few older post that Bender used brown phenolic inserts.

I've noticed on my friend's super fancy Bender, and some of the newer ones, there's no insert, it's straight wood. Unless I'm wrong about this?

Just curious. I only have one shaft, was thinking about having another made at some point, but I'd want it the same way. This thing hits like a dream! (i'll add a review in the review section later).

There are pics from one of Duc Lam's old posts. It's the black cue in there (since I didn't take any pics). My friend bought it from Duc, and then sold it to me later on. And it's going to stay with me forever :)

In the 10 years I've been selling Mike's cues as an authorized dealer, I've not ever seen an insert in a shaft. I've had Mike make several sneaky petes and those also did not have an insert.

I do not think he ever used inserts. My guess is someone else made the daft and can't cut 14 threads per inch into wood. So they use the insert. Probably used a tap instead of live tooling like Mike does.

Back in the early years when Mr. Bender was still operating Omega cues with DPK. some of the cues had phenolic inserts and some were wood. It is possible that Mike still did this when he moved to Alaska. Only way to know for sure would be to ask him. His brother Matt took his place at Omega DPK, and there were still some shafts with phenolic inserts.

You know what, you're right. The old post I was referencing was here:

And they said it Omega/DPK cues that had the brown phenolic in there. This sneaky did not have any signatures, but my friend has an Omega/DPK (refinished by Esoteric Cues) and that shaft does thread in properly.

Someone at Marie's Golden Cue here in Chicago said it looked really old, claimed to have one like it back in the 90's. Maybe it was a sneaky from back the Omega days?

I'll try to take some closer pics of everything.
