Benefit of short ferrule in 3C carom cue

What is the benefit of having a shorter ferrule (compared to a pool cue) on a carom cue?

I have an Adrian Viguera conversion cue that is very light. I recently played some 3C with a Cog pool cue and it felt a little better to me that the Viguera. The Cog is quite a bit heavier and the shaft is less tapered than the Viguera and I feel like I am getting more on the cue ball with the additional weight.

New to 3C. Been playing pool for 6 years.

Thanks

I am seeing more "better" pool players using shorter ferrules. Also, the predator shafts use a shorter ferrule but not as short as the billiards shafts I have seen.

Just starting out with 3C and have been using a viguera with a very tapered shaft. Tried using a Cog I own with a newly built shaft and hit pretty well last night in 3C practice.

I as thinking of shortening the ferrule and use the Cog instead until I find a carom cue I like.

Hi Bob,

It seems like an obvious question.....why don't pocket billiard cue makers use a similarly short ferrule?

Thanks.

Bernie.

Hi Bernie,

As mentioned, Predator and others are using shorter ferrules. The OB-1 is in some sense ferrule-less since it's got a wood ferrule. (I don't know if it's low-density or not -- teak might be a bad idea.)

I think a long pool cue ferrule is more tradition than function.

Tip has to be cut away to accommodate flush ferrule. The longer the ferrule, the weaker the tip. Q.E.D.
