Best and worst commentator??

In snooker I can be sure which ball is which color. Pool with so many different ball sets and color schemes can leave even the commentators stumped on "What Ball is that?"

snooker is basically two colors, not counting the cue ball. and most viewers can enjoy it without knowing the snooker math that the different colored balls entails. it becomes more interesting if you do know, but the graphics and the commentators usually provides that info anyway.

I like Alex Lely, JJ, Frost, Boyes and Mark Wilson. There are some activ players who are really good at commentating -> Neils Feijen and Chris Melling

Also pathetic was up state Al and crew last night falling all over themselves commenting on how good looking this girl was when she entered the booth and completely forgetting the match they were supposed to commenting on. I mean who cares how good looking she was when nobody except them could even see her anyway.. Like I said, pathetic!
I don't think this is fair to Brandon Shuff. He was actually doing a decent job while trying to keep things rolling. All the nonsense around him wasn't helping though. Tried keeping Archer focused but that was impossible. At one point, Al asked him if he wanted some popcorn. Which, you could tell he thought that was bizarre. It's actually quite hilarious on some level. Later, Al was heard eating TAFFY!

Is this just a big troll job at this point? There's always an excuse for what goes on during his broadcasts.

I'm not sure why people didn't like Jim Wych. I always thought he was a good play by play guy. He could be paired with Boyes and told to keep it straight while Boyes runs wild and that would be a really good team.

Boyes is really good. Understands how to talk excitedly BUT normally. Strange combination I know, but our American commentators haven't really figured this out. JJ has the potential to be really good but I think he's read too many positive responses to his commentary and ran with it. He needs to pull back a bit now. Great voice though.

Scott Frost is just figuring this out. He provides good insight but needs to smooth out the delivery. He may get there.

I like Alex Lely a lot. He's always a positive in the booth.

Honestly, most of the rest I can do with or without. Experienced amateur players on random streams do as well as many that do the bigger events. We've come a long ways since the days of just having Accu-stats.

Also I'll add that Mark Wilson at least understands how to do it. When he has an experienced player in the booth with him, he understands how to feed him. It's clear he's learned from other sports how to do it properly. Probably because he loves baseball. There's just a certain rhythm good commentating takes on. Too many times in pool, it's just players talking on top of each other.

couldn't agree more, shuff was the sane voice throughout. probably even when al blasted out audio commercials during the last or penultimate rack, we will never know

Turning Stone was the first time I've ever found the commentary unbearable enough to use the mute button.

I like Josh Roberts for 1P commentary.

Anyone who can't shut up with the snooker comparisons I can't stand.

Billy Thorpe and Skyler Woodward together, when they've had a few, I find the most entertaining.

JJ I find talks a bit too much, but I've learned to tune him out when needed. Mark Wilson, sounds like he is trying to sell his own sports pseudoscience more than commentate.

I actually prefer banter, like what happens with the Post-Up streams, with the occasional pro dropping in. My favorite pro has been Margaret Fefilova-Styer on some of the CSI streams.

Best and worst pool commentator of the modern game.

Who do you have??
Nick Varner. Worst. His co-comm. will say something mildly amusing and Varner will let out this loud laugh that could be heard in the next county. Nevertheless his expertise is welcome.
Faves...J.J, Freezer, Richie Granier, diLiberto, except for his many mistakes about balls going in.
Sky Woodward's backwood's patois should be irritating, but not if you're a big fan like me.

Upstate al’s chewing and smacking his lips while commentating is gross And his belittling of Johnny archer yesterday was shameful. Especially after kicking people off his stream for doing that same thing saying he only accepts positivity . Yeah ok. He gets my vote.

Worst commentator is the one with cotton mouth. Or the one that snorts, coughs, wheezes and / or makes any other disgusting 'mouth' sounds, and oh yeah eating, chewing gum, dipping and spitting tobacco and having side bar convo's on the air. I'm not going to name them, you know who they are..

great point, and I'll bet you're right that mark's affinity for baseball has influenced him
there's at least a million reasons why somebody might not like somebody else
but to me mark is right up there with the best commentators, smart and professional
I was just thinking of mark the other day as I haven't heard him around lately..peace to 'im

(blasphemy alert!)

can’t listen to grady, he whistles
between his teeth while he talks

it’s like when someone eats with
their mouth open

it actually makes me sick and i have
to leave (hit the mute button)
Damn you to hell. I used to like listening to Grady, I never noticed the whistling before. Now it's all I hear.

My friend did the same thing to me with Stevie Nix. I loved her music until he said she sounded like a sheep. I was done from then on. Now all I hear is baaaaaaa baaaaaaaaa.

:)
:):):)

Jim Wych, Mark Wilson are always good IMO. JJ and Scott Frost are up and coming.

Truthfully the only commentators I can’t stand are Billy Incardona and Danny Diliberto. Billy never shuts the fuck up, just the sound of his voice is irritating. Danny with his constant , “he’s sleeping in the street tonight”, “he sold out”, or comments about “how a backer would feel” are just tiring after hearing them over and over.
Add Johnny Archer to that list

I had the Turning Stone live feed running whenever our TV was on and kind of like that he opens the commentator chairs to whomever wants to sit in. He had a young kid sitting in with his dad, and they did a decent job, and it was nice to hear them making their little bets on balls made on the break. The guys from Copper City did a good job, and while it offered them a chance to promote their new place, they didn't really do that, they just called the match and filled in with good color commentary, and were very positive in their comments and discussions. Krystina was in there a bit and the talk was mostly pool, not like the fawning when the other girl joined on Sunday. And I agree that Brandon kept trying to refocus the discussion, but to no avail. Johnny Archer was more of a podcast interview than a commentator. He seemed to view that seat as a chance to move back into the spotlight, and I did enjoy his first time sitting in at first, but it got a bit far out on tangents, and it was not at all commentating on the match. Much of his talk seemed pretty heart-felt and I hope he sticks with his comeback, but leave the commentating on a match to others.

We don't get to hear him often, but Eric Hjorleifson from Canada is excellent. Good analysis from the perspective of a high level player and a real nice radio voice.
Yah, Eric is very very good.

Another guy i like is Fedor’s handler. I wached him with the PostUp guy on Fedors channel for turning stone. I forget his name but he’s plugged in to all the behind the scenes stuff and has good takes on pool related subjects…he ties the takes into what’s happening on the table. Seems like a cool guy.

I felt the same way about him. I thought he even made Collin look better. Molina Mike is a distraction along with a lot of people that wander aimlessly into the booth and sit in front of a microphone.
