One Time I played A Guy >>>>>>>>>

One Time (about 30 years ago) I played A Guy at The Bunny Club in Houston. I got the 5, 7 & the break for $50 a game. Won $650. Came back the next night and played with the 7 & 8 for $100 a game. Won $1400. The next night I played with just the 8 for $150 a game and won $900 but it took about 7 hours to do so.

I never knew who I was playing, I just knew the backer would go off.

I have a 1994 video - Bartable Billiards - featuring bar table king Dave Matlock. In it he plays Mizerak and Archer. Granted, it was a made for sale video but those two guys had no chance against him. And they called him the king.

Dave does state in the video that he has run 9 racks on a bar table.

nine doesn't seem like a lot after what i've seen. the sense i get is that bar table pool is a joke that gives everyone good a chance. what miz and archer said,,,,,,,,ego is kind of a funny thing. ie,,,it's easier for a pro whatever to give credit to someone no one knows than to his competiters. i tell this story all the time,,,,,,,baryshnakov was asked who the best dancer he ever saw was, and he answered fred astaire. well,,,ya know, no one's going to arguewhen he throws out a name from left field like that, and he wasn't about to give his contemporary, nureyev, any credit.

i'm sure matlock is great and this is what i hear from many people,,,but i also feel like i should take what miz and archer said with a grain of salt. they could afford to be complimentary to someone who wasn't their competitor.....jmo

One thing that is overlooked though on the bar box, is that it isn't all about running racks. Obviously if someone runs a ton of racks then they are going to win that session. Matlock, on the other hand, plays a different game on the bar box. He runs out a lot, sure, but he also plays great safeties and is always thinking very strategically. He is always working on growing his knowledge and is one of the most studious players I've seen.

Will he beat Medina when Medina runs 29? Heck no. But he'll beat him more often than he'll lose to him on a barbox IMO. Once he gets control of a match, then it doesn't matter who he's playing, he is able to stay in control. If he went for the runout as much as a lot of the other guys do, then he would probably have a total a lot higher than 9. Heck, I've run almost that many on a bar box on more than one occasion, and I'm nowhere close to his league. I would have done it more too if the dang tournaments hadn't switched to alternate breaks back then

With the big ball, I think Matlock is definitely up there with the best. I don't know about the Miz, but I don't think Archer likes it on the bar box with Matlock. Especially with a big cue ball. I don't think they were stroking him as you described.

One time when I was playing golf with David, he was talking about something that happened with he and Earl Strickland, and he added that Earl was "one of the guys I compete with out on the tour" because he thought I might not know who Earl was.

Don't you mean infamous? lol. Anyways hi there how are things in Indiana? I am in California now where I am working and not playing much. I have played about once in 5 months, but I didn't play bad. Good to hear from the midwesterners. Keep in touch and I would love to see more threads about our neck of the woods as you know I have a great deal of insight on that area.

There's a bar table tournament which occurs every year in Asheville (I think), North Carolina. Last year, I know they filled up well ahead of time.

I am unable to locate one advertisement for this tournament. Yet, it seems all the players know about it, most likely by word of mouth. It's an annual event which attracts some of the best bar table players from all over.

Does anybody know the name of the venue or any further info about this
event?

P.S. My favorite bar table player used to wear a T-shirt which said "The World's Got the 8." I never saw "Keither with the Ether" or "Evil" when he was on top of his game, but I have been told by others that top players came from all over the country to California trying to get a piece of his action, and they left town with empty pockets. It's only hearsay on my part, but I've collected quite a few action stories from the '70s and '80s era which makes me believe that at one moment in time in the history of pool, Keith McCready was at least one of the "BEST BAR TABLE PLAYERS IN THE WORLD." Of course, I'm a little prejudiced, too!

That tournament is the "Smokey Mountain Shootout" in Waynesville, NC (near Asheville). It is the 4th weekend in April every year. Keith should have fond memories beacuse I think I remember him winning it about 8-10 years ago. I have gone about 10 or 12 of the 15 years it has been going on. It cuts off at 128 and last year, I believe there were 81 on the waiting list.

It is a great tournament. It is a charity tournament for the ARC (association of retarded citizens) of Haywood county and the same folks show up every year. It is a great tournament for even B and C players, because along with the many champions that show up, there are many who support the tournament because of the charity and the draw is not filled with champions. And it's almost like a family atmosphere now with the same people showing up year after year. There are players that I don't see during the year, but I know I will see them there. They have drawings and other spectator events, and the food is cooked by alot of the ladies from the area who are volunteers and it is great.

The payoff is not great, but that's not why everyone attends. I'm not sure what the charity makes each year, but it has to be a good amount. You and Keith should look into coming down. I know the crowd would certainly appreciate Keith attitude about the game, as well as his ability.

They also have the National Wheelchair Championships the same weekend with a full field of wheelchair players who play really well. Maybe Shorty could look into coming up to see us as well.

This thread is an example of how 9ball results can be different at any given time. A guy can put 10 racks in a row down today, but tomorrow might only put 5 racks in a row, and lose due to someone playing better. There is no ONE best player in the world on a bar box.

I do have a video of Corey and Feils playing a race to 9 on a bar box 8ball, and Corey pretty much made it look like an "executive table".

ALL THESE PLAYERS ARE GREAT BUT ON THE BAR TABLE I CAN NAME TWENTY MORE THAT NOBODY EVEN MENTIONED THAT CAN BEAT ANY OF THEM ON ANY GIVEN DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IMO - It Is STILL David Matlock OR Buddy Hall.
I've never seen Keith play on a BarBox, so I can't give an opinion on him.

Ihave seen Keith play on one and he beat me to death getting mad weight. He or Matlock were the best for a good while IMHO. Larry Nevel plays them pretty good too.

We had a thread once that talked about Vernon. Keith said he was really good. If you have some good true stories about Vernon start a Vernon Elliott thread and see if we get more imput this time. I have heard he was the best on either table, but I never saw him play.

I posted about this earlier but I forgot about Vernon. I beat his boy in a match a couple of years ago and afterward, when talking, found out he was Vernon's son. Miss watching the old guy. He made some of the shots that you would bet your wad against and go home broke. There were few if any better.

When we had Antonio in country in the late 90's he played a 2 large set against the 9 ball ghost without ball in hand with the ghost getting ten games on the wire going to twenty final score Antonio 20 ghost 15 with a bakers dozen run in the middle of the set. He offered to play Dave Matlock a set on the nine footers and a set on the box whatever Missouri wanted to bet. Alas no game. Johnny Archer, Buddy Hall, and Jack Hynes are also bar box champions. A lot of you may say Jack who? He is the greatest shotmaker alive. If he played safe he would be a threat to any of the Fillipino contigency.
