Would you rather play a race, ahead set, or by the game when your in action? I like races to five or seven when playing nine or ten ball. I know it depends on the person, I would like to hear some input if you don't mind.

Giving yourself the best chance to win at pool!

For me I always like playing by the game gambling, especially since I do most of my playing in the bars, you can at anytime raise the bet if you want to when you have your opponent vulnerable, and usually they will ask to raise the bet themselves if they are in chasing mode!, if you see me in a poolroom it's usually just to play a tournament.

Playing ahead sets are good playing a better player that tires easily, you can run them down in the long run.

Playing races are for the underdogs, I hardly ever play races gambling, it gives your opponent his best chance to beat you.

It all depends on how well you play I guess, and who your playing, knowing your game from top to bottom and your opponents game , most players over estimate their game anyway, so know yourself!

Playing this way has put me at about 95-98% winner over my lifetime at playing pool, and I match up pretty damn good!

In our pool room, the rule of thumb for me was to play a race if you are in a tough game, if you had the best of it play ahead set.

This way you can get lucky and win a race set.

Playing ahead set, luck will not be a factor, the better player will win!, or who ever has the best of it!

Depends on what you are looking for.

Ongoing gambling with anyone - play by the game on a challenge table. Normally at bars. You tend to stay under the radar a little better.

Ongoing gambling in a particular area - Play races to 5/7 or whatever depending on the stakes. You'll win some and lose some, but will stay in action.

Larger stakes with limited opportunity - Ahead sets - But remember whomever you play, if you beat them an ahead set, it is the most defining set to say you are the better player. Limited opportunities for ongoing gambling, especially if you beat a known stronger player in an area. Now you have to get in more spot situations giving up weight.
